For me it's the men that rule figure skating. I'm curious about their new performances, as always of course, but especially this season before the next olympic season. Seems like many are thinking carefully and experimenting a lot. I try to find videos on their new programs, but there are not many.

The North American and the European(non Russian) skaters appear very secretive. What's the point? Can't remember that it's been like this the last seasons. Are they playing mind games?

The Russian Federeation wants their skater's to be open about their new(at least some) performances. What's their calculations? Maybe they thinks it's fine if the judges see the programs before the real season starts. I wonder if it is a better or bad thing to show your programs before they are polished/finished enough? What do judges do in off season (except from educating themselves ;))? Probably watching skate videos, especially on their favorites and on new performances they find on youtube.

Abbott, Chan, Joubert, Nan Song, Reynolds, Rippon, Kozuka, Lysachek, Weir, Amodio, Fernandez, Schultheiss….. all of them hiding their masterpieces from us

Keegan Messing, Alexander Majorov, Peter Liebers, Paolo Bacchini, Tomas Verner and others who could be Euro/4CC/World participants are competing at the Nebelhorn Trophy, but no videos so far…

These are the videos I've found. Are there others?

Marni ‏@crossthefingers tweeted a YouTube link for Jeremy Abbott at An Evening With Champions.
[She tweeted twice, but apparently for the same vid link. I include both tweets below in case one of the links does not work. I have not watched the vid.]

Jeremy Abbott, Evening with Champions, Saturday Sept 29, 2012

@PCFclub @Jeremys_JPfans http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HclDBc_ek2s&feature=youtu.be
9:53 PM - 29 Sep 12

And Abbott's mother Allison Scott ‏@PCFclub replied:
@crossthefingers @Jeremys_JPfans This is only part of the long. The "quad" was actually a triple. Quad is in the part he didn't do.
10:06 PM - 29 Sep 12

Marni ‏@crossthefingers also tweeted vids of other performs at An Evening With Champions.

ETA:
I forgot to include the tweet from Jeremy Abbott ‏@jeremyabbottpcf himself:
Not perfect, but what'd you all think? @eveningwchamps #LP2013

Dai's SP is a serious step back for him. He's had so many good programs and this one seems like a retread, and not a good one.

You've already seen Joubert's SP - it's last season's program (unfortunately) with some changes on steps and choreo. No idea what he's doing for jumps and if he'll try a 4S again, as he did at the Challenge Cup. As for his LP, as well as Amodio's programs, we'll know after the French Masters next weekend.

They want some public reaction, to see how it works for the audience. Team Russia test skating actually takes place twice - first closed, only for specialists and consultants (in August), when, their advice considered, open for general audience (in September). They show programmes to see what needs to be changed, not to boast how cool they are)))
One of the easiest example of taking the feedback seriously is that Davankova/Deputat chaged their FS costumes after Lake Placid - if they had open test skating first, they would be forewarned. Artur Gachinski brought more expression in his SP on the second day - I must say he was awarded with ovation.

.

Urgh....I watched and did not fall in love at all. I have loved, like out of my mind loved, so many of Dai's programs, SP, LP, and exhibitions. And really, last year's in the Garden of Souls grabbed from the first moment the first time a saw it and....well, I'm not feeling this one. I hope it grows on me. Regardless, wishing Dai a great season.

Haven't had a chance to watch the others yet....but did see part of Abbot's LP to Les Miserable....liked what I saw there.

My first impressions on Hanyu's, Gachinski's and Takahashi's new SPs:

The music in Hanyu's SP is somewhat lame, I think, but the coreography suits him well and he's of course a great skater, so I enjoyed the SP anyway. Hanyu seems more mature - not only the way he skates (or perhaps it's because of the coreography), but also the way he looks. It's six months since I saw him perform in the Worlds, a rather short time, but maybe he has grown and matured physically during the summer... or maybe it's just that my eyes deceive me.

About Gachinski's SP. I love the music, the atmosphere, the step sequence and of course Gachinski himself (sorry for being such a silly fangirl, I can't help myself  ) and I'm really looking forward to seeing him perform it in the GP competitions. Of course he fell after the first jump and everything didn't go as smoothly as he probably intended, but after all it was just a test skate. Unfortunately the coreography lacks imagination - all three jumps in the beginning, just like last season - and I had hoped his team could come up with something else this time. But anyway, I liked it.

Takahashi's SP was enjoyable as well, not very original but he performed it well. The man is so full of charisma that he has no problems performing to that sort of music, flirting with the audience and so on. Hopefully his LP will be something different, something not so obvious.

My first impression on these programs: (I only watched each program once, might change mind later.)

Hanyu's SP - Charming. It has a potential to develop into a very good program that suits him well.

Brezina's SP - Like it. Has he tried a 4S there?

Abbott's SP - So so. And he put a 4T in it. Good for him!

Takahashi's SP - Nothing new. I was looking forward to seeing what Lori Nichol could do for him but he changed his mind.

ETA:

Abbott's LP - Classical Jeremy. This has reminded me why I loved him... But I suspect that this program might need to add more content into the frame. Right now it's a little plain. I'm not really a fan of Yuka Sato as a choreographer.

By the way, this is Jeremy Abbott's SP (music by Nathan Lanier, choreographed by Benji Schwimmer) :

Choreographed by Benji Schwimmer? How delightful. Benji is an inspired dancer and choreographer, and it pleases me no end that he's gotten involved in figure skating.

Oh, Gosh, I can't get rid of Jeremy Abbott's LP music in my mind! It makes my heart swell. So I went back to watch his LP again. I'm ready to fall in love with him all over again - wish he could eliminate the "Yuka Sato moments".

 catching up is suddenly hard. Once there were like no videos and now plenty. After next weekend we might have them all. Buttercup mentions French Masters. Also there are Japan Open and Ondrej Nepala and Finlandia trophies.

Sounds like a good plan :)

I think it's fine that he tries something comical…. we'll see what comes out of it. Fingers crossed that he his quad will be consistent this season(and next )

Choreographed by Benji Schwimmer? How delightful. Benji is an inspired dancer and choreographer, and it pleases me no end that he's gotten involved in figure skating.

Benji Schwimmer helped him choreograph his swing thing last season as well. Actually I don't know much about Benji except that he is some sort of a dancer. Is he well known in US? Looks like he and Jeremy are friends and work well together.

Yes it's lovely, but I find the music a bit too sad and serious. This was an exhibition and lasted less than 4 minutes. Wonder what he left out. The difficult light must have been disturbing.... and the screaming... or not?
"Which are the Yuka Sato moments"?

Thanks, another great program. I'm amazed by the strong competition in Japan. All of them just have to do their best in every competition this season.

Michal Brezina Free Skate The Untouchables

Even though I knew this, I'm still unhappy that Michal is keeping this free skate...it wasn't my favorite to begin with :p

As for Daisuke's short program, it was alright, not exactly spectacular but I think he can better it as the season goes along. I think it just doesn't live up to the high expectations that were set after last year's short program. Seriously, though, Daisuke could sell a glass of water to a drowning man, and I'm sure he can sell this program. I'm dying to see his FS!

"Sad and serious" is fine for competitions. I'm sure if Jeremy skates clean for this program, many of his fans will cry. The music makes it so easy to cry.

"Which are the Yuka Sato moments"?

The moves that Yuka Sato normally uses. There are several that I could identify in this program. In short, the movements that looked lovely on Yuka Sato don't necessarily look good on a man.

I love Jeremy's LP music and I honestly feel Yuka has done wonders with him as far as feeling his music and presentation. You can definitely see her influence on his skating and I think it's been a positive one. It's clear the LP is a work in progress and should/will have more content. I also think it's really hard to skate a serious competitive program under those lights. Must be hard to spot your marks.

Benji Schwimmer, for those who don't know of him, won a reality dance program called So You Think You Can Dance. He's also a champion Westcoast swing dancer but on that program was required to do many different styles of dance - and did them well enough to beat out Travis Wall (another excellent dancer, Emmy-award winner and well-known choreographer) I love what he did with Jeremy's SP last year but this new one is going to have to grow on me. Last year's SP was one of the best I've ever seen.

I agree with those who have said Dai's SP is just a regurgitation of past programs. I, too, thought Lori Nichols would have a positive effect on him......:sarcasm:

eta: corrected to Dai's SP. Ooops.
