While reading the Mao Asada skating to Swan Lake thread, one of the main complaints I read from posters is that Tatiana Tarasova, her choreographer, is considered (by many, including me) to be one of the best choreographers in skating. However, she seems to use the same pieces again and again, usually from Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky. I thought I'd list some Russian composers, whose works, I think, could fit well in skating, but are often ignored:

Mily Balakirev: http://youtu.be/YlEh8iZUhb8

Cesar Cui: http://youtu.be/aQE3fshDg1I

Anatoly Liadov: http://youtu.be/_OdW-zcDalo or if you don't like tinkly piano: http://youtu.be/rwBOx7zMKXI

and my favorite composer, Nikolai Myaskovsky: http://youtu.be/D2hdvvyM5SI

I wouldn't mind hearing more Prokofiev .......

Carolina's Shostakovich SP last season was a delight and for those who like 20th century music perhaps more Shostakovich would be nice.

Aside from Don Quixote, I'd love to hear more of Minkus' music. (I love Don Quixote, too, tho!)

I'm so happy to see this thread!

Great ideas for music, everyone.

Besides the composers unused in skating, there is also a lot of lesser-used music by the usual composers (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Rimsky-Korsakov, plus Borodin). I mentioned several works in the Mao thread. I'm repeating the Coq d'Or one here because I just love it so much.

And let's not forget Rimsky-Korsakov's student Glazunov (his most famous work is The Seasons, but there's heaps more. Here's a section of his suite The Kremlin (about the palace itself, which is very ancient).

Borodin wrote a beautiful Petite Suite. The Serenade movement is very lilting, in waltz time. (It's followed by I think the Nocturne.)

I recognize that! I realize on listening through that I really haven't heard it in years and had pretty much forgotten about it. It would indeed be lovely to skate to, Mathman.

Have you noticed how beautifully Russian composers use woodwinds, and especially the oboe? Maybe because it's so plaintive. In any case, this is a gorgeous piece; thanks so much for reminding me of it.

There is Tchaikovsky - not Peter but the lesser known Boris Tchaikovsky (no relation). At the San Francisco Ballet, resident choreographer Yuri Possokhov created a piece (Diving Into the Lilacs) using B. Tchaikovsky's Sinfonietta for Strings. It's a beautiful piece and I think the music could work for a skating program.
