Does it honestly matter? If people enjoy it and it is popular enough to get national coverage (which it appears to be), then who cares if its defined as an actual "sport" or not.

I think this has to do with subjectivity. It's not like breaking the wire in a race or getting another touchdown, or hitting that winning home rund, or swimming in the winning time, etc., etc.
Sports like Diving, Gymnastics, Figure Skating, ballroom dancing, etc., etc., are all judges by subjectivity at least in part. I believe that presents a problem for a true result.
