Although different judging panels...something to point out- Weaver and Poje's scores at Skate America would have been first in the SD here

edit... a tweet from Peter Murray-something to think about

V/M tech score 27.72 does meet minimum Tech Score (29) to qualify for Worlds. Only the Italians did with 32.44.

Yeah, that's an ouch. V/M have the tech score from last year, of course, and they're eligible for Worlds, but ouch.

D/W also didn't get the levels they usually do at SA IIRC- didn't B/S beat them on levels? I wonder if Igor's absence is showing. I hope not.

I think it is. Neither team seems as half as prepared as they did at the beginning of last year... the programs don't seem as cohesive... I don't think the coaches are as good seperate as they are together... but it's early and they could prove me wrong.

in all honesty and no spite, that miss on the lift was slightly funny. flailing bodies and costume malfunction.

I totally agree. I am surprised they got positive GOE on it no matter how little. Also thought the GOE on the twizzles was VERY lenient. Scott obviously made an error.

All the same they are a joy to watch. I understand the PCS having seen it.

B/S beat D/W in levels in the FD, not the SD.

D/W's SD vs V/M's SD:

YP DW: level2 for the first segment and level4 for the second; total: 13.92
YP VM: level3 for the first segment and level2 for the second; total: 12.79

Twizzles DW: level4, 7.33
Twizzles VM: level3, 6.00

Step Sequence DW: level3, 8.83
Step Sequence VM: level2, 7.00

Lift DW: level4, 5.17
Lift VM: level1, 1.93

TES DW: 35.25
TES VM: 27.72

PCS DW: 37.14
PCS VM: 37.37

In the thread on the men's short program, someone posted that Skate Canada is the most corrupt event on the GP circuit. And after seeing both Chan's and Voir's PCS scores, there may be something to that.
I thought SCI used international judges? Why would it be more corrupt than any other GP event using international judges?

You beat me to the video post, 1795.

Very interesting. Davis and White had a similar problem with their lift at SA in the sd, but not quite as prolonged as that by Tessa and Scott.

Surely it was not just the lift that had V/M being scored uncharacteristically low. I admire V/M skill, but I have never really been over the moon with their skating in terms of their character and personality on the ice. OTOH, I am in love with Weaver/ Poje and Davis/ White, and I also enjoy Mitchell/ Islam, and Gilles/ Poirier much more than V/M.

I think D/W sd is better than V/M this season.

One more thing about the lift- I love how Tessa came out of it beaming as though nothing had happened. Made me smile.

Back to lift technique practices for Canton top teams. ;)
YES both top Zueva teams need a LOT of refinement. so far, Scott and Charlie are looking like they're throwing and tossing their partners up in the air like pizza dough while there is no polish in all the positions.

I thought however Tessa hanging like a corpse on that rotational lift did fit the dirge-like part of the music. :p

Well Meryl and Charlie had a much more polished sd than did Tessa and Scott. Plus D/W got out of the wonky lift a lot faster than V/M too. ;) D/W do need to continue working on the finer points of their fd. Let's see how V/M fd fares at SC. I'm sure they will rock it out of the arena, if the practices are any clue.

Sorry, but saying there is no polish in Meryl Davis' position in the rotational lift at Skate America strikes me as being as close to objectively wrong as figure skating can get.

There's not much height difference between Tessa and Scott. If Scott has neck pain, a lift like that last one is chancy to begin with. They need to replace that lift ASAP. Scott shouldn't be toughing it out if the end result costs that many points.

He said that it was the one he hurt himself on and there was debate about taking it out. I think they will be taking it out.

Wow, though I wonder how C/L are feeling about now. This really sets up an interesting fd, since C/L are skating to the same music (maybe not the same cuts) as V/M.

Early in the program Scott said he almost knocked Tessa out — accidentally hit her. They got visibly stuck on their last lift — the one that he apparently hurt his neck on. That knocked the lift down to the lowest level. Also apparently they lost some levels on some other things.

This doesn't bother me at all. They know what they need to work on and I expect their scores will just go up as the season goes on. And, importantly, I liked the program as a whole. I think it's a good vehicle.

Exactly this. I really love this program. It absolutely suits them, and will be a great contrast to Carmen. I really love how the polka and rest of the program blend so seamlessly. The technical elements are completely fixable. V/M always improve throughout the season. Next outing will more than likely be 10 points higher. I don't have a problem with their PCS scores so high. Their skating skills, interpretation, unison, beauty, quality edges, and so on are really in a class by themselves. It's simply divine. You'll notice there are no 10's in the score sheet this time. By the end of the season I'm sure there will be.

Zueva should call in a known technician, or send her students elsewhere for a week, for Yankee Doodle and step sequence boot camp. (I'm not sure we can blame this entirely on Zueva, since the Canton teams did miss levels on their pattern dance sequences last year even with Igor. And none of his teams this year earned level 4's.) They need a specialist for this. V/M were just off a little on the twizzles, and they are capable of doing much better. I expect the lift will be changed.

Of the other teams:
- really liked C/L. They are dressed well, moved well, and are just lovely. And awfully easy on the eyes....

- liked H/D. They have a ton of potential. Gorgeous, well matched team.

- French had the most entertaining program. I was expecting to hate the program, but it was just so cheesy it worked for me. By worlds this should be a lot of fun.

- Really glad that G/P received more appropriate marks. I was hoping an international judging panel would put some sense into the placement of this team. I love that they are having fun together, but they need to be more matched in skills, lines, edge etc. before they deserve the marks they have received in the past. And this will take some time, since skills like this are not built overnight. Watch the video, paying attention only to G/P feet, then compare with other teams. His are fine, but hers are really messy, missing toe points, and almost flat instead of on edges often.

- Still very sad for R/H. They need better material and better costumes. After such a good year last year, they are back to sub-par programs and packaging. So sad.
