Well, there is an old Indian song...

My translation:

Is my gaze beautiful,
or are you beautiful?
That is something I don't need to understand.
It's a matter of gaze,
the matter in itself is nothing.
The one the heart loves, that one is the most beautiful in the world.

Totally OT, but just in case anyone is curious:

Call me crazy, but I don't think Yuzu's wins even in a bishonen contest. He just looks... really young. I never got the "OMG, RL anime!" vibe from him. And yeah, despite being relatively young myself, I'd still feel a bit creepy fangirling over him (even though he's not technically underage and Plush was doing more risque stuff at 19). Check out some Korean TV stars or Japanese singers--plenty of them go for the bishonen look and I think they are better-looking than Yuzu.
I admit Dai is very good-looking, but he looks a bit like this Taiwan actor I absolutely can't stand, so that lowered his hotness for me a bit. :frown:
Plushy at 15 years old looked cute. But Plushy at 17 years old already looked sexy. Russian men! :laugh: Yagudin is still so hot even now. :love:

I think Yuzuru looks like he's 15 years old. Even for Asian standard, he looks so boyish I couldn't think of him as a 19 years old. I am Asian so I know. My friends on facebook are gushing over him with...auntie attitude and call him "my son!" I mean, even some men say Yuzuru looks like a good son if they ever want one. So funny.

Plushy, despite his looks, seemed vulnerable in his first olympic, though. It's understandable. No one is born with the ability to control anxiety. I remember his looks when all of them was waiting for Yagudin's scores in Salt Lake city. What a pity Yagudin didn't stay until 2006.

Dai is handsome, but he will look tiny if we see him off ice. I mean I am even taller than him. Lol. But Dai surely have great presence on ice.

@LRK: Oh that is beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

Reminds me too of what Helen Keller (and who has a better right to say it?) has said: "The heart has eyes which the brain knows nothing of."

I have my own personal preferences as to skaters and their skating, but I try also to see what others see in their favorite skaters, and even if my heart does not always follow suit, at least my brain understands. ;)

That songs explains a lot of what I was trying to get at!

@Meoima
Yeah, it's hard to think of Yuzu as 19. Or to realize he's 171cm and taller than Patrick Chan and Dai. He looks so tiny!

I give Plush props for not giving up in Salt Lake. He skated--performed--the rest of his SP despite the fall on the quad. And instead playing it safe for the long because he had little hope of winning, he went out there and attacked. It was the skate that stuck with me the most from Salt Lake. Years later, when I rewatched, I realized Carmen wasn't as perfect as I remembered... but it was still gutsy as hell and I appreciate how he went for the most difficult combinations in the field. It's still my favourite of Plush's Olympic skates (I say this as someone who like his other Olympic free programs as well).

I've no problem with Dai being short, since I'm tiny myself. ;) He's also the best proportioned among the "short" men, so his height doesn't affect his performances.

(LOL, I wonder how long before a Yuzuru fangirl sees this thread and rips us apart for denying his sexiness? :biggrin:)

Admittedly I am biased, but I don't find Yagudin's looks anything special (sorry Meoima). Especially not nowadays. I would describe them as "good average." :laugh: In terms of Russian men, though, next to Plushy I find Maxim Trankov the most sexy & handsome.

When I first saw Plushy I found him interesting-looking, "striking" might be the word...but I'm not sure when it happened that I started finding him hot. Definitely the killer combination of his talent, his confidence (some would say arrogance, but at least he can back it up, so I don't mind it), his accent, and charm make him more attractive.

Well, I think Yagudin is handsome on the first sight people see him. If he skated badly people would dismiss his charm right away. But he skated well, with lots of gut, dramatic programs and powerful jumps, even though not as powerful as Plushy, that's still a plus.

And yes, Maxim Trankov is so hot. :love: but I think his hotness also comes with the height.

As for Plushy, I think he belongs to the group "weird looking but extremely charming, even more charming with so much talent." I know some people wouldn't find these guys attractive but they represent this group so well: Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston. :laugh:

@Sandpiper: don't worry, Yuzuru's fangirls are mostly aunties. I mean, how could they even call the kid sexy? Sexy pooh? My best friend, who happens to be gay, also likes him very much. Funny though, he thinks Yuzuru looks beautiful. :eek: but he also values the kid's cuteness.

:laugh::rofl::rofl: You're killing me!

Trankov's attractiveness seems to change as often as the weather. I thought he looked really great with the "emo" hairstyle several years back. But then he busted out that greasy Snape-like hair (coupled with unflattering sweater) for the exhibition. Almost single-handedly ruined the gala for me. :laugh: At least Tatiana looked gorgeous as usual.

@Meoima
My best friend, who is a fellow anime fan, thought he was pretty cute. Though she agrees excessive fangirling is a bit creepy because of his age. I can kinda get behind "cute," as a description... but beautiful? I don't think Yuzu's quite there.

Well, my friend is gay...so....ehe he he hhe he, I remember reading some youtube comments on youtube under Yuzuru performance and a bisexual man said his gaydar was running high when he see Yuzuru. :laugh:
But I think that's normal, even Plushy got hit by gay men before. :popcorn: Yana said so, if I remember correctly.

Well, my (rather conservative) mother didn't get gay vibes from him when I showed her his performances. Didn't even comment on his flashy outfits (the LP and the gala). And she was rather critical of Johnny Weir back in Vancouver (though she commended him for staying on his feet :laugh:).

Maybe Yuzu can grow into "beautiful" in a few years. But for now, I see him as a nice, sweet kid.

@galiavich - "good average" - Gasp! - Oh, no you didn't! You went there! Oh, you bitter, jealous, envious hater, you! :laugh:

@Meoima - Benedict Cumberbatch & Tom Hiddleston! - Genius! - You know, I wondered what modern actors we could cast for the Yagudin/Plushenko Story - with the requisite amount of Sheer Charisma, and could think of nobody - and was deploring that we didn't have a time machine, as then we could get young Richard Burton & Peter O'Toole - But, by golly... you've cracked it! (I thought Cumberbatch was marvellous in Star Trek Into Darkness - my favourite part of the movie in fact, and I am soooo looking forward to him as Smaug! - And Thor 2 made me into a new Loki fangirl - what can I say? - couldn't help it!)

@Sandpiper - I'm sure there was an interview where Plushy was asked about Yuzuru looking/skating (don't recall exactly the term used by the interviewer) so young, and Plushy vehemently defended him, saying that of course, he was only 18 (I believe at the time), and of course maturity would come with age.

I'm not all that into the "weird looking but extremely charming" group, so maybe that's why I like "good average" Yagudin. :laugh: I do think he was better looking circa. 2002 so I accept the "good average" critique for present-day Yagudin. I admit I don't follow western actors very much, so maybe I just haven't been exposed to their charm.

I'm waiting for some fashion magazine to interview Plushy about Yagudin's style. Then we'll get some threads like NEWS! Hideous Plushenko calls handsome Yagudin "good average"

Well, of course Plushy's going to defend Yuzu--he's a bigger fan of Yuzu than the adoring aunties. We'll forgive him that--even the King can't be completely without biases. ;) (Of course, I hope he's right and Yuzu will develop more maturity in the future... but I still don't think "sexy" is likely in store).

EDIT: Oh, Kovtun and Gachinski plays Yagudin and Plush in potential film. I thought we'd settled on that already! :biggrin:

^That was freaking awesome!

But wait, in the potential movie, Plushy is the Evil Russian Villain? :no:

Not necessarily. Tom Hiddleston's capacity for Evil is scarcely less... ;)

ETA - Oh, and Benedict Cumberbatch's most famous role is playing a certain Sherlock Holmes - who may be a lot of things, but not Evil, so... Still, will make people sit up and take notice, won't it? ;)

So... Evil vs Evil? I like that!

What to do for the actual skating scenes? Maybe we should just let Plushy and Yagudin play themselves. :biggrin: (Yagudin attempted a bit of an acting career. I dunno if it went anywhere, but...)

Is there a stream for that 3h program? I just don't trust that such a long film will not be blocked by youtube.

I went on a search for the tv program - haven't found it yet, but I saw a lot of screenshots on Twitter. I checked the Nicovideo website (a Japanese Youtube-like site) and no luck, but I did find the elusive video of Mao & Plushy's pair dance there! Well, it seems to be a remixed version - I don't think it's the original music, but it's better than nothing. (you might have to register to watch it - I just registered w/Facebook)

edit: This Youtube user has graciously uploaded some clips...it's very endearing to watch him giving Miyu a skating lesson. What a lucky girl she is!

Can I ask you something, Gallavich, there might be a chance clips on youtube will be deleted one day, what about nicovideo? Does this site often takes down figure skating clips?

This was my first time going to that site (saw it mentioned on the Yuzuru thread), so I don't really know. I would imagine it's possible, so if there is a clip you want to keep, it's probably wise to download it. I found this Firefox extension for downloading the videos https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nicofox/ but nothing for Chrome.

You can Google other software programs to download, but I can't vouch for any of them.
