KKonas, thanks for your reporting on all the teleconferences.

Sorry, but I am not sure how to interpret your second sentence. Which of the two meanings below is correct? (I think the answer is B, but do not feel 100% certain. Dunno if they chose the teleconference to make news??)

- (A) It is true that we will retire from competition at the end of this season, but we have not really thought about the reality that it is our final season.

OR

- (B) We have not really thought about whether we will retire from competition at the end of this season.

I'm inclined to say (B) based on past articles. If I can find one, I'll put it here, but IIRC, they said they would compete as long as they had the desire and ability to do so.

It is (B). That is not a direct quote.

Jere Longman of the NY Times has a major article today on Davis & White. Someone with better internet linking skills can hopefully link it here.

Enjoyable quotes, especially from Charlie with regards to his and Meryl's "looks" and how they use them to best advantage in presenting programs. But also, though the article overall unfortunately put a somewhat negative "spin" on the ice dancing itself, with more than a few references to some of the more regrettable moments for the sport (i.e., Dominina/Shabalin's Aboriginal OD which provoked such ire). There were links to this journalists pieces around the time of the Vancouver Games which had quotes from people who were definitely not pleased with the costuming, which included somewhat unbelievably, the use of "black face" make up.

A BIG CONGRATS to Meryl and Charlie for winning their SIXTH Nationals crown this year!!! They skated FABULOUSLY as they always do. I really do think they're headed for Sochi gold. Should be a great showdown with V&M.

Praise for D&W from Dick Button
Icenetwork: Watching the skaters in Boston, what was a big positive?
Button: Well, you've given me very broad ground there. It's hard to answer. Let me say that Meryl Davis and Charlie White are absolutely the supreme quality of what we are looking at. I was watching them today, and their technical merit of skating is simply exquisite. The way they float over the ice, the way they move, the constancy, the comfort they have, is simply mind-blowing.

Random question out of sheer curiosity -- asked respectfully by someone whose beloved nephews are Jewish (so please do not take offense):

Charlie White is not Jewish, is he?

I raise the question because of a very nice article about the importance of Judaism to Max Aaron. (Thanks to dardar for posting the link on FSU.)

I could swear that White has tweeted about celebrating Christmas with his young relatives (cousins, nephews, nieces??), maybe even reminisced about his childhood memories of celebrating Christmas, etc.

But the first two sentences of the article about Max imply that White is Jewish.

American Jews are well represented in figure skating at this month’s Winter Olympic Games, which begin in Sochi, Russia, on Feb. 6. Six-time U.S. ice dancing champion Charlie White (along with partner Meryl Davis) and the newly crowned ladies’ champion Gracie Gold and U.S. men’s silver medalist Jason Brown will pursue their sport’s top honor: an Olympic gold medal. Max Aaron, 2013 U.S. men’s champion, had hoped to join them. ...

I know that Jason is Jewish. But White???

And Gracie Gold? Hate to say this, but she seem sort of WASP-y to me. :p

That said, it does appear Charlie White has a Jewish background; did a quick search and found numerous articles in reference to Charlie White being Jewish in articles on his (and Meryl's ) silver medal performance in Vancouver.

That said, it sounds like Charlie White is Jewish in background only however (his grandmother was the one that talked about his roots)....

This article points out that his mother was Jewish but his dad was not and that Charlie was not raised Jewish: http://www.interfaithfamily.com/art...brities_Ice_Dancers_and_Desirable_Women.shtml

Thanks for your research, Mrs. P.

Had no idea re White's Jewish roots, although I had read/seen plenty of stuff/fluff over the years about his life off the ice.

OTOH, I have skipped over lots of media coverage re Gold, so I am much less familiar with what already is known about her -- thus my lack of inherent curiosity in her case. (Another acronym comes to mind as a possibility regarding her faith. Just a possibility.)
