Here is Michelle's Salome program. I thought she gave a great interpretation of (one way of looking at) the character. Salome was not a voluptuous seductress. She was a kid who was forced by her mother to perform for a lecherous king in a plot to get revenge on the mother's political enemy, John the Baptist.

Thanks MM, it was my unclear writing. Of course Romanza was her sp in 96. I remarked this i when she started performing, flirting with audience in a spanish number. Watch her face and ending pose. Invincible. Salome was of course as you describe it. She acted pretty well and won. I never would have chosen that role for her, but it worked. Like you, I remember most of her competitive Sps and Lps. Watch Ashley's eyes, and you can see she has learned from Kat and Mk how to connect, bring in the audience. For all we know Frank used to make her watch tapes of katarina.

No, Frank had MK watch tapes of Janet Lynn. This was discussed ad nauseum during her career that MK wanted to emulate the joy and effervescence that Lynn had.

It is interesting how even in sport, women have to seem "nice" even if they are killer competitive. No one wins like kat or MK unless they have killer instinct.

Ashley is reminding me we could have another consistent winner like MK, and I see similarity in their skating. I think she will have to add the 3x3 by worlds. Or maybe she will take the MK route, go safe, be consistent and wait for others to blow it on harder elements. It sure worked for Kostner last year!

It seems Ashley needed to accept that killer champion persona that all the great champions have. She truly beoieves in herself now. Imagine MK at age 12? going behind Frank's back to take her senior test? That is a very, um, tough kid. Can't use adjective I'd like lol.
Actually I think Wagner ALWAYS had that so-called "killer instinct". Problem was, she did not know how to channel it properly- so what you had initially from her were somewhat rushed performances (which often led to silly errors) because she wanted it just a little TOO much. Nicks finally settled her down and taught her how to bring out that competitiveness in a more constructive way.

I also appreciate that she is (or at least was) not afraid to show her competitiveness and state her desire to be the best. The double standard mentioned still exists to a degree but I think the times are changing. USA women's skating is at a low point and too many are satisfied with/settling for "lesser" results than what used to be routine. Glad to finally see someone step up and say "this isn't good enough, I want (back) on top"- and most importantly, turn those words into actions.

Yes, I totally agree that Ashley wanted it too bad.

People are wondering why Ashley is getting much higher scores on the GP than she did a season ago. It's because she's a better and more confident skater and it shows in her skates so far this year. As someone said in the U.S. Ladies thread -- last season she wanted to be the best -- this season she is the best....

That's where I heard she was a Tara fan. Thanks.

The biggest difference is that Ashley is a late bloomer, while Michelle was a young prodigy. Ashley won her first U.S. championship at age 20. At 20 Michelle won her fifth U.S. championship and her fourth world championship.

Another connection -- Ashley won the 2012 Michelle Kwan Trophy for the most popular U.S. skater among readers of the USFSA's Skating Magazine.

This I agreed with. I don't see Michelle when I see Ashley. I see more of a Rochette.
