Just saw a quick NHK interview w/ Mao. She said her lower back's feeling better and that she hopes to do well like her practice.

According to this Mao is in very good shape. Landed 3A's twice. But they will not go for it this time. She said she had amazing practices.

Another practice video for ladies.
According to the narration, Mao attempted 2 3A's the previous day (20 Dec), both successful and one success out of 3 attempts on 21 Dec.

Mao's 3A in this clip is again UR, she finished her rotation on ice - similar to Takahashi's 4T at his SP. Trying such 3A in competition is a risk because depending on the Tech Panel, they may or may not be merciful. Plus, due to the low success rate on this jump in the past by Asada, any perceived UR will likely be more harshly penalized by the judges as well. I think it's a wise idea that they are no putting it in the program yet.

I love Mao, and it certainly is a great thing to compete in international competitions as your own countrys number one, but deep down I wish that Akiko skates the LP of her life and wins the national title. She deserves it.

Ditto.

BTW - I saw Mao during warmup, and she looked a bit tense/tight. (It's on TSS right now, if anybody wants to try livestream, etc. They haven't showed Mao yet)

Only 2.28 pt difference between Mao & Akiko despite Mao's popped 3Lo...? o_O
Assuming the PBP is correct, Mao did do a more difficult combo, which makes up some of the difference between a worthless element and a 3R.
