It was -4 degrees Celsius in the arena during the short program--extremely cold and not very conducive to figure skating. Hopefully it warms up for the free skate, but I'm not optimistic.

I had read that in previous posts. I think it impacted Yuna's performance, despite the fall and popped lutz she performed beautifully though. I am hoping they can do something about the temperature during the free skate as well can't be very healthy for the skaters either.

I am hoping they can do something about the temperature for the skaters long-term in rinks all across the country ... Eep. Guess nothing's really changed in rinks even after Yuna's win.

Yuna's achievements have cast a light on figure skating in South Korea and its a major positive for all young skaters there. Yuna makes a lot of money in her country and I'm sure the government taxes her money heartily, I wish they could use that money to improve their skating rinks. I couldn't imagine being a 5 or 6 year enduring temperatures that low to skate. Hats off to all the competitors at Korean Nationals for performing and training under those conditions!

There was a talk of building a figure skating rink after Yuna's OGM win, but then it went nowhere and the Seoul City government (IIRC) scrapped it altogether, saying that it made zero financial sense. :sigh:

So the condition is actually worse now that it was when Yuna started (or at least that was the impression I got after reading Yuna's memoir, which was published Jan 2010. She said that though the number of rinks and their conditions have not changed or gotten better, the number of youngsters interested in figure skating has increased. So now rinks are quite crowded.

I actually think that maybe this is one of the biggest reasons why Yuna tried so hard to win the Winter Oly bid because it'll force Korea to build a decent figure skating rink. I don't think international skaters will be so accommodating or understanding about competing at a rink that's -4 degrees Celsius inside.

I really believe South Korea won the bid for 2018 because of Yuna, as she is probably the most recognized sports figure in Korea. I remember being speechless when they aired South Korea during her free skate in Vancouver, it was like watching the world stop. It makes me sad that they can use Yuna's likeness and the sport for their gain but scrap a new ice facility because its not feasible:(

Yeah, her Vancouver comp was the biggest thing in Korea that month, and nobody was working when she was competing. The skating order really worked out well, since for short, it was Mao-Yuna and in free, it was Yuna-Mao, so everyone can watch them back-to-back.

A lot of them have used Yuna and her image for their gain (her university did too), but none of them want to do anything in return for her like building an ice rink. She said that was all she wanted -- a decent figure skating rink where Korean figure skaters can train. Yuna used to train at public rinks and/or amusement park rinks after-hours when she was young, so she used to stay up past midnight to train. Right now she doesn't have to do that because she can train at Taereung (another cold rink). But still a real FS rink would've been great not just for her but for other skaters in Korea.

P.S. I'm not even sure if it was really not feasible, or if it was some other political ploy. I've seen what the government considered "feasible" which really upset me.

Feasible was probably the wrong word to use. My apologies.

Yuna went squeaky clean. 145.80 for free / 210.77 total!

She skated with a lot more speed and confidence. Really liked this performance.

Thanks for the men's SP results. I really like the skating of Jin Seo Kim & wish him well here, and at Jr Worlds. Sorry to here he popped his 3A, but glad he tried it.
