Kseniya Ponomaryova used to represent Uzbekistan IIRC?

Sam Kaplun used to represent Ukraine at the international Junior level.

I think so. Prior to Sectionals, Ponomaryova & partner were listed at Lake Placid IDC without a code that signified a country.

Given she previously competed for one of the former USSR republics and her partner has a Russian sounding name as well, I am surprised they aren't skating for Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan or Azerbeijan where they would be pretty much guaranteed to make the national team.

It would be smarter, but also more expensive, given that they are living & training here in the States. They will not be making the US team, nor getting USFS support. Chances are, if they feel they reach an international standard for TES, they will move on next year, I would guess?

They aren't very good yet...they might not make the KAZ or UZB team. And they wouldn't qualify for Europeans in any case at this point. Their TES in the FD at sectionals was only 28.54, and most of their elements got negative GOE's. In the SD, it was 13.91, and they hit none of the Yankee Polka key points. They were 3rd of 4 teams at Midwesterns, and all 4 automatically qualify for Nationals.

Thanks, that makes sense.

Competing at US Nationals doesn't mean anything internationally so they might as well get competitive experience this way for now (and who knows maybe they really want to represent the US ;)).

Donohue's epic fotos (Welcome to Omaha?)

@Z_Donohue has been tweeting all day en route to Omaha by car.

Upon their arrival, he sent these "epic" (not an overstatement) photographs (two similar versions):

Welcome to #Omaha2013 ......or not? pic.twitter.com/gOqGexXf

ETA, Donohue sounds unruffled and upbeat on Wed morning -- seems to have shrugged and/or laughed off Tues night's unpleasant surprise.
After a short night in a much nicer hotel than the 1st...good morning #Omaha2013 what an amazing venue!! Great ice can't wait to get back on
