My daughter just called and not only is she not better she has also been diagnosed with sleep apnea. She was really upset and took the cheapest of the alternatives which is going to a dentist and getting some kind of mouth appliance. She hasn't been able to get much sleep at all since she first started getting ill and the Dr. told her that if she didn't get any sleep, she couldn't get any better. Of course, the biggest factor to her was she has no money. So, of course, Mom is having to help her again. Luckily I just received a fairly good farm check from my husbands share of their farm. I'm sure it won't be enough but she also needs help paying off her credit card. Her therapist is helping her getting her on a list as a flute teacher. They will come to her. So we need prayers for her to heal and to come up with more money to pay off a lot of these debts. Another problem is I don't know how long I can pay these bills. I do still have some of my stocks, etc. but then I won't have any money if something happens to me that I have to go to a nursing home (heaven forbid) or have some kind of travesty.

GrGranny-
My sister has sleep apnea and uses a mouth piece that a dentist made for her. It helps a lot. She can't use a breathing machine because she has allergies and the machine causes her throat to swell. I hope the mouth piece works for your daughter.

Hang in there GrGranny.

Grgranny...

You can count on my prayers and hopes for you, your daughter and your collective families. I really hope your daughter recovers quickly, and that the financial burdens are not too heavy.

Please let me know (us know) if there is anything more than prayer that we can do for you and your family right now.

Many huge hugs,

Doggygirl

Grgranny,

I have sleep apnea too. I use the CAPD machine.

Not sleeping really messes up your body. I never realized how bad my apnea was until I had the sleep tests. After starting the machine at night, I looked back to all the things that showed how bad it was. Never realized that some of those "things" were my body trying to grab sleep, whenever and wherever. Sleeping does help. It takes awhile for the body to make up some of that sleep deficit, but when it does, she should notice improvments in her health situation. I did. My allergies are less severe and I find I have better resistence to colds and such. Hope this proves true for your daughter. She (and you) deserve a break from all those health problems!

Keeping you both in my prayers....

Grgranny, does your daughter have a weight problem?

My neighbor across the street had sleep apena and has severe allergies so she could not use the machine. Since she is caring for her husband who had astroke 3 years ago, she needs all the sleep she can get. She was fitted with the mouthpiece by her dentist. She went to have her physical about a month later and her doctor told her that if she lost weight, the problem might clear itself up. She lost about 60 pounds and her sleep apena almost disappeared. She does use the mouthpice during times of high pollen counts when her allergies kick in.

I wish all the best for you and your daughter and will be thinking of you.

Figureskates, she doesn't now. She had weighed over 300 pounds and was wearing size 26 -28 before she got sick and now wears a 10. She is 5'8. The biggest reason she lost all the weight is because she is so allergic to most all foods there's hardly anything she can eat. This all started when the Dr. gave her the wrong allergy shots. I wish she could have sued them but the stress was just too much and she has been to sick to do it.
I sure appreciate all the good thoughts and prayers I have received. Thanks ever so much.

GrGranny, of course you and your daughter are in our thoughts. Has she looked into any type of financial aid or grants to help out with her finances. There are clinics that offer help for various ailments (of course, some of them are experimental). I had a friend once who ran an experimental clinic for allergy sufferers. They got free medical treatment, and their individual problems became case studies. Check the internet. Let us know how things are going......42

She has Medicare and Kpers, a Kansas employee thing. Most of the things she does are alternative medicine which Medicare or any insurance would not pay for and her therapist won't accept Medicare. Her therapist also told her that none of them in that area do the sliding scale thing she was doing in Kansas. This is a Christian therapist and she told her she could only half her bill as there is some kind of board that won't let her do anything else. I am pretty perturbed about that. This bill only came to light after the previous posts. She owes $7300 because the secretary hadn't been posting the bills. The reason Janet didn't realize it was because it was supposed to be going on her credit card. All the medicine she takes is alternative and there is a lot of it and it is expensive too. She won't go to any more regular Drs. as she went to many many and the only thing they did was make her worse. She went to every kind of specialist there is and most of the times to several specialists of the same kind, like Neurologists.
On top of that, my oldest daughter called me tonight and really chewed me out for helping her.

grgranny,

sorry to hear daughter #1 is putting you in the middle. is she one of those people who believe her sister's problems are all in her head? i really find that hard to deal with some times. i know it is her problem, but it puts extra stress on you, making you have to defend helping her sister in her search for alternative medical help.

it is hard enough to feel bad and desperately search for anything that will help without other people telling her (and you for helping her) she is nuts or some kind of moral failure. she's not and neither are you. you do know that, i'm sure, but it must still hurt.

wish there was some guarantee that these problems could be accurately diagnosed and effectively treated. but there is not and your daughter has to try whatever she thinks will help. i know other people might think some of the things she tries are ineffective or outright quackery. that she (and you, since you are trying to help her financially) is being taken for a fool. sometimes, that is true but what if an alternative she hasn't tried yert has the real potential to make her health and her life much better?

thinking of you and BOTH you daughters....

Thanks Jo. Yes, to some degree this sister thinks her troubles are mostly in her head and she is self centered. Actually, her other sister and brother kind of agree to some extent but not that much. They do know she is in big trouble and are worried about her too. # 1 and her brother both think she should be going to regular Dr.s. The other daughter doesn't say much as she knows it hurts me too and she is my angel, the one that helps any one with anything. She's the one that takes me to skating things, etc. She and her husband are actually going to take my sister and me to Wyoming and Idaho this summer on their vacation. Both brothers live in their motor homes all the time. The Idaho one owns a campground near Stanley and the other one manages a campground in Wyo. in the summer. I keep hoping Janet will be well enough she could go too but doubt it. My sis lives in Nebraska.

Grgranny,

I can certainly understand your daughter's reluctance to go to regular doctors. After all, they haven't even given her a diagnosis she can believe or any hope of treatment that will help. I also believe she shouldn't cut them completely out. After years of feeling like crap, I finally got an accurate diagnosis, that I had a kidney disorder. If I had completely given up on the regular medicos, I wouldn't have gotten that validation.

Of course, getting an accurate diagnosis is only a part of the quest. I have come to realize that my nephrologist is trying the latest scientifically validated treatments. Even when I wonder why, I will at least check out what he says and most often give it a try. I expect him to change my blood pressure meds when I go in this month. And believe me, I hate to change meds. I figure, I've already gotten used to the ones I'm on and new ones have unknown side effects. Keeping track of all the meds I'm on now and all the meds I was on previously (long term effects, doncha know). I am definitely a "show me" type person and find myself practicing medical self-defense. Sometimes, that means I'll get a doctor or nurse who thinks I'm in a medical field. I tell them it is self-defense to know as much as possible about your personal medical issues and the treatments for them.

But alternative medical treatments sometimes become the standard treatments. Just think of all those people who have taken aspirin over the past century. Aspirin came from an old herbal treatment. Eventually, someone isolated aspirin and we've been using it every since, even when the occasional study raises questions about it. Now, many of us take it proactively to lessen our chances of heart attack and stroke. And we don't even know for sure how aspirin works!

What seems the most sad to me is the fact that your daughter has such limited options. Allergic reactions limit her diet and other things she could be doing that could help her health. Even the Dr. Weills advocate some of the same things: diet and exercise. Kinda hard to use diet when what she can tolerate is so limited.

I'm glad your family tries to be supportive, even when they wonder about their sister and worry about their mother. None of this is simple or straightforward. And everyone has mixed feelings about these things. I just wish more people could be more tolerant about how other people feel and think and try to make their lives more livable. In my family, my sister has a "thing" about psychiatric medications. She was horrified that I was put on Prozac. Guess she figured I'd become a serial killer or something. Her reluctance partly came from the fact that her husband is an alcoholic and does AA. AA doesn't seem real supportive about the psychiatric medications. Her husband suffered needlessly from a long depression before he actually sought anti-depressive treatment. Just goes to show that people can change their minds when something affects them personally. It's that "walk in another's shoes" phenomenon.

Anyway, hang in there and do what you feel is right.

She got her mouth appliance today. The dentist said she has very severe apnea and even has it during the day. We are all hoping this will be the help we have been looking for.
Her main Dr. has loaned her his keyboard and she is writing Christian music. (I think I told you she was a music teacher.)
Her main instruments are the piano, flute & voice.
