    Antique ice skates

has anyone here used those antique strap on ice skates they used to use on the canals in holland? are they just for distance skating or did they use them for figures also?

Are these the kind of skates you mean?
This site has a history of skates:

In the Victorian era, skates were strapped on to those high boots women wore to skate, but AFAIR, wasn't it Jackson Haines who screwed the boot to the skate permanently.

Strap on versions existed for quite a while later.

You could probably skate compulsory figures in them.

The only strap on skates I ever had were the old double runners when I was really young.
