5 Tips to Get Thin and Stay That Way

Here we go again! More info on the "D" word:

5 Tips to Get Thin and Stay That Way

The d-word is a four-letter word you should never say. No, not that word. The "diet" word. Instead of a diet, your weight loss efforts should be a permanent change for your good health and that's a lot easier to do with these five tips from Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Virginia Anderson:

Tip No. 1: Little Things Mean a Lot
Losing 5 to 7 percent of your body weight may not seem like much on the scale, but it is enough to lower your risk of diabetes by a whopping 58 percent. It also reduces your risk of sleep apnea, lowers your blood pressure, improves your bone density, and improves your quality of sleep.

Tip No. 2: Low Carbs: Craze or Phase?
A low-carb diet, such as Atkins, will help you lose weight fast, but it may not work over the long haul. The National Weight Control Registry says that of the 4,000 people who lost 30 pounds and kept it off last year, very few used Atkins to do it.

Tip No. 3: Know Your Body Mass Index
You may not even be overweight! A good way to find out is to compute your Body Mass Index or BMI. The target: 19 to 24.9. If you're 25 to 29.9, it means you're overweight, and anything over 30 is obese.

Tip. No. 4: Learn Labels
Read food labels and learn the real size of single servings. Example: A single serving of most beverages is 8 ounces, but many of us drink 20 ounces at a time--two and a half times as much!

Tip No. 5: Cut 100, Burn 100 (Calories, That Is)
If you eliminate 200 calories a day, you'll lose two pounds in a month. Or, burn more calories instead. Do any of these and you'll burn 100 calories: Vacuum for 20 minutes, walk for 24 minutes, jog in place for 11 minutes, jump rope at moderate pace for 9 minutes, wash your car by hand for 21 minutes, or swim easy laps for 13 minutes.

You won't believe what counts as exercise! Making photocopies, throwing a Frisbee, sweeping the floor, and more.

"Food for thought!"
