Wow, great news, I like his jumps!!

Sorry for mentioning other skater's names in this thread, but I am very looking forward to seeing Yuzuru Hanyu, Han Yan, Joshua Farris and Jason Brown at the same stage. It's kind of scarry to watch but so exciting at the same time

What's up with Han Yan? No news about his LP and SP? I am sure he'll improve under Lori's guidance. He says his LP is incredibly hard which means he is pushing himself.

Here's Han Yan's winning Junior World 2012 LP. When Tracy was asked how many junior skaters would eventually become successful seniors, she responded saying that Han Yan has the qualities to become successful - his deep knees, musicality, flow and skating skills (of course he already has his jumps!). He just need to develop his extension and lines. Can't wait to see what Lori has created for him.

Lori gave him nice programes. SP is a big surprise, while LP is extremely complex.

Han Yan trivia:
His name is 闫(Yan) 涵(Han) in Chinese, the pronunciation of his name is exactly the same as the Chinese words 严寒 literally means " extreme cold ".
The pronunciation of Yan is also the same as the Chinese character “焰” or “炎” literally means " flame" So among his fans and on his fan-made banners/cartoons, he is referred as Flame on Ice. which is perfect for his skating style.
Kurt Browning gave Han Yan a nickname " Honey " during his trip in China this summer for Artistry on Ice, This nickname is widely used by figure skating seniors such as Uncle Kurt, Stéphane Lambiel and Johnny Weir .
Yan Han is also endearingly nicknamed " DD " among his Chinese fans, since DD has similar pronunciation as 弟弟 which means " little brother " and he is so young and so cute.:p
To be continued....
Some fans got a new nickname for Yan Han -- Hanee. I think it is cute and will use this one for now.

Hanee's new SP and LP this year are all choreographed by Lori Nichol. They spend a couple of magical weeks together and created 2 very freshing, unique programs.
The SP used Music of "Minor Waltz" and " Viper's Drag". according to Hanee " the SP portraits a hooligan who is flirting with girls while being deluded by Ecstasy... It is more feels like a EX instead of SP..."
The LP used the sound track of Hannibal Trilogy. There is an intact strong line in this LP. Hanee perform the role of Doctor Hannibal.
Both programs are very demanding in terms of performance(facial and whole body) and interpretation. Hanee has been working really hard on that.
Cannot wait to see his 2 new programs on COC.

Looking forward to Hanee's :) and other skaters' programs in COC. I am sure Hanee will skate better compared to September. Two new programs so it will take time to develop.

Congrats to Han Yan (Hanee) for a great SP and start to the GP competitions. I am pleasantly surprised at the stride he has made since turning to Lori for choreography. If Hanee continues this trajection, he will challenge the more experienced men in Sochi. His first debut to Seniors last year was pretty good. Now it can only get better. All the best to this young man who may be the future of men figure skating in China. Go Hanee go!

Among Japanes fans, Han Yan is very popular not only for his dynamic jumps and brilliant skating, but also for his funny face and comical behavior, which he always presents in his Weibo to make us laugh.

So, this SP is exactly WHAT WE ANTICIPATED from him!

Hanee's interview after CoC win. I translate from source.
"In the SP, I showed my capability mostly, however, still did not reach the performance level Lori expected from me."
"I was a bit nervous in the LP, and haven't got the capability to perform it to its full. therefore, I lowered the difficulty (he means jump contents and transitions but I still skated to the end, my performance is also appreciated by the Judges, which means that my coach and I's understanding of figure skating is correct --- regarding the smoothness and integrity of the whole program as well as the quality of execution, I am happy not because of the competition result but our concept/approach about figure skating was appreciated."
"I went home at 11pm and was very excited, get to sleep at 2am, luckily today's official practice is scheduled late as well, so my training went well. I was not concerned about other skaters' performance, just focused on my own stuff. Frankly, coming out as the last, is really nerve racking."
"what I showed in my LP is not the original planned difficulty content (jump components and transitions), it has been lowered a lot. our goal it to skate a clean program. But I still made mistakes although it is already very easy. .....(laughing embarrassed:p). I was really surprised that I was rewarded such a high score on my first GP. After I made a mistake, I adjusted quickly, no matter what mistakes I made, it has passed, just focus on what comes next."

When asked how did he started figure skating, Hanee said" it's my birthday gift, about 5 or 6 year old, my grandpa brought me to a rink for my birthday celebration, the coach there thought I had potential. so continued with skating till today." "you were chosen the very first day you were on ice?" "Yup!"

Regarding who will be send to Sochi Oly,(China has only one spot a touch decision between Hanee and Nan Song) "It's still a competition. I still have to practice step by step. But I felt pretty good after CoC, I can perform these water-down program with ease. But due to lack of sufficient training of my new programs. I am still not perfectly connected with music. therefore, I made several mistakes, I was not satisfied with my jumps today, If I could make it to Sochi, I will put all the difficulty back into my programs (transitions and perhaps a 4S).
"I just wanna go back and sleep.."
"Off ice, I am just a kid, I like to communicate with every one through Weibo (Chinese social network).."

:p such a cute, humble, level-headed kid.

This year's 'Cutting Edge 2013 plus' , a japanese magazine for figure skating fans, has an interesting article about Han Yan and Nang Song. Somebody already translated it into Chinese (I found it in TIEBA), but no English translation. How I wish I could translate it into English, but.....

That's cute. Han has great skating skills and very good jumping techniques, great speed in and out, powerful and assured. His spins are good too. So just pay more attention to the arms, more refined and more extended, he would be the whole package.

Does he have an entirely Chinese coaching team? Where does he get choreography from?

Hanee's interview from BTV
http://video.sina.com.cn/p/sports/o/v/2013-11-04/224463105715.html
rough translation of Hanee's answers.
He is very glad not because of competition result but his coach and his approach to figure skating (emphasize on whole package, skating skills, performance etc) is appreciated by international judges of SENIOR Men.
His new programs (especially LP) have a lot more contents in it than his former programs, and he felt very difficult, and still hard for him to handle now, but he think he will be better next time.

Thanks yyyskate. Looking forward to a more developed LP as the season progress. It's a bit bare right now compared to his SP. It is good that he is challenged. He is still young and on a learning curve. The seniors didn't get there overnight and I am sure Han Yan's time will come to be always standing on the podium. This kids has the right attitude.

Thank you for the vid! Han also said that he started to learn skating by accident at the age of 5. It was a birthday gift from his grandpa :), who took Han to an ice rink on his 5th birthday, just wanted him to have fun for his birthday. Yet, the figure skating coaches there found his talent as he started to skate, and later he became a competitive skater.
