2013 Junior World Figure Skating Championships: Pairs Free Reports
2013 Junior World Figure Skating Championships
Pairs Free Skating
Disclaimer: The GOE values listed next to the elements are the ones, I'd award if I was a judge, to give you a general impression of how well it was executed. I try to describe each of the elements but there's not always time to be as detailed as I would like and those numbers can sometimes say a thousand words. So if you see positive GOE, it means an element was executed to a high standard (and yes, I am generally being very nitpicky).
Any questions, comments, criticisms and discussion are very welcome.
An observation that came to my mind when looking through the protocols after the event was over, was that judges seem to pay attention to how lifts look in the air but not so much to the man's footwork. There were some examples where there wasn't really anything wrong with the lifting but the footwork was slow, scratchy and lacked flow. And it's something that should affect the GOE as much as what happens overhead.
1. Hayleigh BELL / Alistair SYLVESTER /CAN/
Fantasie Impromptu by Frederic Chopin
3twist lacking height, underrotated, crash [-3]
2axel solid
throw 3loop painful fall [-3]
it took them a while to recover
spread eagle to axel lasso to one hand hold and dismount strong
choreographic sequence
pair change combination spin
star lift to one hand heavy dismount [-1]
throw 3salchow went deep down in the knee but held it well and had good flow out
flying camel/sit/up/change sit broken leg off-synch throughout [-2]
back spiral and shoot-the-duck into fids with change of hold decent position and rotation speed
Postures and lines need work. Not the best choice of music from them, given they aren't a classical, balletic team.
2. Rachel EPSTEIN / Dmitry EPSTEIN /NED/
The Lion King (soundtrack) by Elton John
2twist with arm above clean but very little height
2loop/2toe(heavy step out from her) [-2]
toe lasso to change of position and carry laboured [-1]
throw 2salchow
flying camel/up L/change sit cannonball lost synch at the end [-1]
spread eagle to star lift to one hand to difficult dismount not too bad but he two-footed the landing [-1]
choreographic sequence: spread eagle and catchfoot spiral / front spirals(extension lacking)
throw 2flip
spread eagle and Y spiral into bods she fell [-3]
to pair combination spin quite slow [-1]
They mostly skated through the music but their basics aren't that bad. It's just that technically they are so far behind the other teams (and that gets reflected on the PCS as well even though it shouldn't).
They are quite close in height now so I'm not sure how much of a future they have in Pairs.
She seemed very dissappointed and distraught in the Kiss & Cry.
3. Marcelina LECH / Jakub TYC /POL/
Amelie (soundtrack) by Yann Tiersen
2twist very low, underrotated, crash, two-footed [-3]
throw 3salchow quite good height
2lutz she singled [-2]
toe lasso to one hand hold and dismount
catchfoot spiral into fids with change of hold
choreographic sequence: mirrored spread eagle and catchfoot spiral, spiral with him going under her, dance lift all the movements were a little unfinished [-1] (element got no value for not holding a spiral long enough)
throw 3loop two-footed, hand down [-3]
flying camel/sit/up raised knee/change sit forward bend off-synch on change of foot but ok otherwise [-1]
2lip/half-loop/2toe(he put his foot down) [-3]
press lift to one hand hold and dismount a little laboured [-1]
to pair combination spin quite slow [-1]
They are new to pairs (this is their first season together and she was a single skater before) and it all looks a little tentative at this point. They were quite tense and the program wasn't presented or sold very well but that's probably because they were focused on going through each element at a time. Work in progress.
4. Giulia FORESTI / Leo Luca SFORZA /ITA/
Momentos Te Quiero by Flamenco Flam Boyan
salchow lasso to one hand hold and dismount strong, nice extensions from her but he two-footed the landing
3twist big crash, not much of a catch at all [-3]
Y spiral to fids decent rotation speed but she could be lying closer to the ice
nice mirrored entry into 2axels she fell [-3]
choreographic sequence: front and back coe spirals / a nice move with her lying on his boot
to pair change combination spin quite slow
throw 3salchow fall [-3]
star lift to one hand to upside down carry to difficult dismount two-footed by him [-1]
throw 3loop step out [-2]
mirrored 2loop/2toe/1toe she wrapped the loop and her toes were quite weak [-1]
camel to catch(she really struggled)/upright/change sit broken leg [-2]
Decent speed, their movements were quite well extended. Basics not bad for a team of their standard.
They rotate in different directions. She has a perfect built for pairs at the moment but hasn't reached puberty yet.
5. LI Meiyi / JIANG Bo /CHN/
Boundless (from "Big World")
3salchow weak landings from both, poor speed out [-1]
dance lift to 3twist quite high but a crash, two-footed landing from him [-2]
axel lasso to change of position and one hand
flying camel/up L(he struggled)/change sit holding foot(went totally out of synch)/up [-2] - done quite close together
transitions towards throw 3loop two-footed, poor flow out [-3]
transitions towards throw 3salchow landed it but then pitched forward and fell [-3]
unextended shoot-the-duck into fids with change of hold weak edge [-1]
choreographic sequence: front and back catch spirals (got no value, probably because of not making use of the full ice surface)
star lift to spread eagle carry(he couldn't hold it and had to go back to rotation) dismount quite heavy and two-footed [-2]
to pair change combination spin very weak at the end, barely managed to keep the rotation going [-1]
They are a perfect example of all the flaws in the Chinese skating program. They are going for triple jumps (and landing some of them) but their basics are weak and undeveloped and everything looks forced and muscled through. Their movements were unifinished and there was hardly any connection to the music.
They really would be much better off spending some time working on their stroking, doing ballet classes and focusing on executing easier elements well instead of going for higher difficulty ones which ends up looking like he's throwing a sack of potatoes around.
6. Kamilla GAINETDINOVA / Ivan BICH /RUS/
Die Fledermaus Ouverture by Johann Strauss
3lutz/2toe he underrotated the lutz over half a revolution, had a weak landing, turned out and only managed to eek out a single toe-loop after she landed hers [-3]
steps towards 3twist underrotated over 1/2, big crash [-3]
throw 3loop not a lot of height and she was leaning in the air slightly but a solid landing
flying camel/sit/up var/change sit/up Y - decent rotation speed and very well synchronised at the start but lost both speed and synch at the end
choreographic sequence: spirals / a nice dance lift / a nice move with her lying on his boot
3toe her landing a little skiddy
spread eagle axel lasso to one hand hold and dismount - his free foot a little late coming out
throw 3salchow a little wild in the air, both hands down [-2]
catchfoot spiral into fids with change of hold
kneeling entry into star lift with changes of position to spread eagle dismount strong
to pair change combination spin [-1] second position slow, really off-centred on the third position
The program flowed well and had a few nice choreographic touches. She's a much more elegant and balletic skater than him, however.
Whilst they are strong single skaters, the pair elements are still very much a work in progress.
7. Britney SIMPSON / Matthew BLACKMER /USA/
Excerpts from Henry V by Patrick Doyle
3salchow she underrotated over a quarter and fell, not a very strong landing from him [-3]
2twist not a lot of height, two-footed landing from him [-1]
throw 3loop
salchow lasso to change of position and one hand hold to difficult dismount a little laboured, two-footed landing from him [-1]
2axel(she underrotated over a quarter and fell) into 2axel(he singled, she didn't do it) [-3]
throw 3salchow slight touch down with free foot on the landing, nice extension and good flow out, however [-1]
choreographic sequence: spiral / spread eagles good speed and extensions
star lift to one hand to difficult dismount strong
camel/sit/up/change sit to cannonball/up synch quite poor, good rotation speed though
Y spiral into fids with change of hold
to pair change combination spin decent positions and rotation speed
Quite good postures and lines, some nice attention to detail throughout the program. They extended their movements well and had a consistent 'regal' theme.
Laureano Ibarra rocking the 'just got out of prison gang henchman' look in the Kiss & Cry complete with a shaved head and tattoes on his hands.
8. Julia LAVRENTIEVA / Yuri RUDYK /UKR/
The Last Samurai (soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer
dance lift to steps to 2twist high and solid but he two-footed the landing
throw 3loop shaky landing, hand down, no speed out [-1]
spread eagle into axel lasso she went up to his shoulder and then they had to abort it [no value]
2flip/2toe high and solid
flying camel/sit/up/change sit broken leg well synchronised but could use more speed
2flutz hand down from him [-2] (he singled it in the warm-up so it's clearly not his favourite jump)
choreographic sequence: some original movements (quite well extended), front catchfoot spirals to finish
dance lift to star lift to one hand strong but two-footed from him
throw 3salchow [-3] hand down, foot down and then a step out with hand down, they really telegraphed it as well
catchfoot spiral into bids
to pair change combination spin
Their basics aren't bad, a fair amount of power in their skating but they skated totally through the music.
Their coach looks quite terrifying and he highlighted what didn't work in their program, in the Kiss & Cry, which isn't exactly a very constructive or supportive attitude.
9. Jessica CALALANG / Zack SIDHU /USA/
The Artist (soundtrack) by Ludovic Bource
2axel she cheated slightly [-1]
3twist crash, she landed on his shoulder [-2]
catchfoot spiral towards axel lasso to one hand
spread eagles towards 3salchow two-footed [-3]
flying camel/sit/up raised knee/change sit to forward bend synch a little bit off in places
steps towards 2lutz(he singled)/2toe(he singled)/2toe(he didn't do it, she stepped out with hands down) [-3]
star lift to one hand to change of position to difficult dismount strong, nice extensions from her
choreographic sequence: spirals / a nice spin move / steps
catchfoot spiral into fids with change of hold good position, very close to the ice
spread eagle and spiral towards throw 3lutz good height but landing a little scratchy
pair change combination spin
Skating to jazzy, vintage music again. It fits them well but the choreography wasn't as strong as in the SP and they didn't interpret the music as well either.
10. Lina FEDOROVA / Maxim MIROSHKIN /RUS/
cantilevers towards 3twist huge, easy catch
throw 3loop weak landing, not very secure and her hand reached down towards the ice [-1]
2axel clean but far apart
Y spiral to fids with change of hold good position
steps to 2flip/2toe
camel/sit/up biellmann/change camel upward catch good positions, well synchronised at the start but lost it after change of foot [-1]
choreographic sequence: spread eagle and spiral / front catch and owen spirals well extended movements
throw 3salchow excellent height, landing could have been a little more controlled, however
spread eagle to axel lasso to change of position to one hand strong, good extensions from her
sideways hip lift to one hand
to pair change combination spin very good positions, decent rotation speed to start with but they lost it after the first position and were quite slow from then on
A much more polished and secure performance in comparison with their Short Program. The program featured some playful movements throughout and while they were quite entertaining, they didn't really fit their tango music. A quite 'juniorish' program (I was quite surprised that the judges loved it as much).
After the short program, he admitted that her fall on the throw 3salchow was his fault.
11. Anabelle PRΦLSS / Ruben BLOMMAERT /GER/
Robin Hood (soundtrack) by Marc Streitenfeld
2axel solid
dance lift to 3twist not a great deal of height but quite effortless
throw 3salchow lacked height but clean and solid
flying camel/sit/up L/change sit broken leg/up off-synch until the last position [-1]
choreographic sequence: front spirals / ina bauer and spiral / ina bauers / spread eagle and fan kick / dance lift good speed, well extended movements
throw 2flip
dance lift to star lift to one hand to change of position to spread eagle carry strong, good extensions from her
shoot-the-duck into fids with change of hold good position
spread eagles to axel lasso to one hand hold to difficult dismount his footwork didn't flow very well
pair change combination spin quite good positions, could use more speed though
Good postures and lines, neat and composed movement throughout. Everything looked very polished.
Whilst their technical arsenal is still somewhat limited (no sbs triple jump and only one throw triple), everything they perform is of good quality. They've shown to strong performances, skating to the top of their ability.
Provided she 'survives' puberty, they have incredible potential given he's new to pairs and this is their first season together.
12. Brittany JONES / Ian BEHARRY /CAN/
Winter and Summer from Four Seasons by A. Vivaldi
3twist slightly underrotated, crash, landed on his shoulder [-2]
3toe a little off-synch on the take-off but good height and clean landings
choreographic sequence: front spirals / dance lift / front spiral
throw 3loop not a lot of height and slightly off-axis in the air but a clean landing with a nice extension
2flip/2toe(a little bit off-synch)
press lift to change of position to one hand to carry to difficult dismount
throw 3salchow not a great deal of hight but clean, good flow out
flying camel/sit/up/change sit broken leg/up well-synchronised, decent rotation speed
axel lasso to one hand to difficult dismount strong
bods weak position [-1]
pair change combination spin first position slow, second not extended very well [-1]
Decent speed and quite a good job on the elements but they really need to work on extending their movements better. Everything looked quite ragged and unfinished.
Kristy Sargant Wirtz was with them in the Kiss & Cry and I couldn't help but notice that their presentation was as messy as the Wirtzes' used to be.
He was wearing a Yagudin inspired costume.
13. Haven DENNEY / Brandon FRAZIER /USA/
La Strada (soundtrack) by Nino Rota
3twist good height and decent catch but a two-footed landing from him
throw 3salchow off-axis in the air but she held the landing well
3salchow a little stutter on her landing (at first I thought it was two-footed but she was clean)
2axel into 2axel
camel/sit/up raised leg/change sit/up var well-synchronised
axel lasso to reverse rotation to change of position to one hand laboured, quite weak footwork from him [-1]
throw 3loop scratchy landing but she hung on [-1]
pair change combination spin decent positions, could use a little bit more speed, though
star lift to change of position and one hand to difficult dismount entry a little tentative, strong lifting but his footwork was again quite weak and he was on two-feet on the landing (I think it was supposed to be a spread eagle but it didn't quite work out)
choreographic sequence: footwork / split jumps / back(poor extension from him) and catchfoot spirals
into fids position not bad but could use more speed
A lot of speed and attack throughout. They skated with a lot of power. Some nice, in character movements at the start but they mostly skating from one element into another in the second half.
14. Margaret PURDY / Michael MARINARO /CAN/
The Artist (soundtrack) by Ludovic Bource
dance lift to 3twist [-2] big crash, not much of a catch she just fell on his shoulder, they did manage to maintain quite good flow throughout though
spiral moves to fids with change of hold good position
camel/up L/change sit holding foot(off-synch)/up decent positions and rotation speed (but they did go off-synch for a little bit)
spread eagle to axle lasso to one hand a little laboured [-1] (they failed to get it up in the warm-up)
throw 3loop not a lot of height, hand down, had to fight for the landing [-1]
choreographic sequence: front spirals / spread eagles / dance lift nicely executed
star lift to one hand to carry to difficult dismount two-footed, a little heavy going into the carry and on the dismount [-1]
dance lift to throw 3salchow not a lot of height but a solid landing with good flow out
pair change combination spin decent positions and rotation speed
Speed and flow were decent and postures and lines weren't bad but they were a little cautious and tight in their movement (the nerves probably got to them) and the program didn't look as elegant and effective as the Short, as a result.
15. YU Xiaoyu / JIN Yang /CHN/
Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss
2axel into 2axel(she cheated over a quarter) [-2] her landings weren't very strong
3toe she cheated over 1/2 and had poor speed and flow coming out [-3]
Y spiral into bods with change of hold position not very good
flying camel/up Y/change sit cannonball well synchronised, decent rotation speed
choreographic sequence could use a little more speed and attack
steps to 3twist good height, his free foot was a little late coming out though
transitions to throw 3loop high and secure
throw 3salchow good height and distance, had to fight for the landing though
axel lasso to one hand to carry to difficult dismount
fell on 'nothing' and it took them quite long to get back into the program
press lift to one hand and full split a little rushed as they lost a bit of time because of the fall
pair change combination spin quite good positions and rotation speed
They've shown some strong elements and a decently choreographed program but again they didn't push the presentation enough. Their skating is still quite cautious and introverted and they need to develop their performance skills. Basic skating could improve as well, D/F were much faster and P/M have shown much better flow.
16. Evgenia TARASOVA / Vladimir MOROZOV /RUS/
Phantom of the Opera on Ice by Roberto Danova
3salchow solid
steps towards 3twist very high, strong catch
3toe into 2axel he fell [-2]
axel lasso to one hand to difficult dismount a little bit laboured, two-footed landing from him [-1]
flying camel/sit/up/change sit cannonball(he travelled very slightly) [-1] - second change of position a little off-synch, rotation speed was decent though
choreographic sequence: front and back spiral / spread eagle and front spiral quite well extended position, decent speed
throw 3loop fall [-3]
star lift to one hand to difficult dismount a little laboured and a two-footed landing from him again [-1]
throw 3salchow good height and distance, soft landing
shoot-the-duck and spread eagle into fids with change of hold [-1] - foot down from her coming out
to pair change combination spin could use some more speed
They have quite good speed and their elements are extremely impressive when performed to the top of their ability but tonight, it just didn't work. They seemed quite tense and have made some uncharacteristic errors like the lifts being a little off or the weak death spiral exit. And they skated pretty much totally through the music.
They seem to have heaps of potential. The technical content is there (well it wasn't there tonight but they do have it) and they need to work on developing the second mark now. Stronger, more charactertistic choreography, slightly better postures, more upper body movement and so on. I am slightly worried that Stanislav 'Ogre' Morozov is not the man to do it but hopefully I am underestimating him and the fact that he always moved like a bull in the china shop and could not have been possibly any more stiff does not necessarily mean that he won't know better as a coach.
Tarasova burst into tears after seeing their placement and stormed off.
