Jenni finished 2nd out of 29 in the SP, with a score of 68.71.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Beautiful. Just beautiful.

Jenni always was a beautiful skater, ever since I first came across her all those years ago. But she has got even more beautiful now.

I was near welling up, it was so emotional.

Into second, only half a point behind the leader. And deservedly so.

:cheer: WELL DONE JENNI!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

I really don't know what I can add to that. What I said at the time speaks for itself.

Looking at the protocols, the judges couldn't find fault with anything. There was not a single minus in her box.

Jenni is currently 0.53 points behind the leader, Maiia KHROMYKH (RUS), and 3.79 points ahead of 3rd position, Niina PETROKINA (EST). Jenni is also 5.68 points ahead of Nicole SCHOTT (DEU).

I don't want to get ahead of myself, but Jenni has a very good shot at winning the Warsaw Cup.

Oh, boys but I hope she has another beautiful skate in the Free!

:cheer: WELL DONE JENNI!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start at 13:00:00 CET (12:00:00 GMT / 14:00:00 EET). So 6 hours from now.

Jenni will be the 28th skater to start. So, fifth skater to go in Group 5 (and second skater to go after the first resurfacing).

The Group 5 Warm-Up is due to start at 16:37:00 CET (15:37:00 GMT / 17:37:00 EET). So 9h 37m from now.

Jenni is due to start at 17:11:30 CET (16:11:30 GMT / 18:11:30 EET). So 10h 11m from now.

Jenni finished 16th out of 29 in the FS, with a score of 96.14. This meant that she dropped to 9th place overall, with a score of 164.85.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

I was holding back tears with the nerves before Jenni skated. And I was in tears with sadness after she skated.

The pressure got to her. And who would blame her? She hasn't won a competition outside of Scandanavia for nearly 8 years (Junior Ladies at the 2014 Bavarian Open). So, being so close to the leader after the SP would have put a lot of pressure on her.

15th in the FS, and 8th overall.

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:

But, in that performance in the SP, she has shown that she is well on form and she can be a contender for medals. She just has to work on coping with the pressure.

CaroLiza_fan

It started off alright with Double Axel-Triple Toe combination. But, then it turned into a nightmare. She fell on her Triple Flip. Then she fell on her Triple Lutz. In her next element, the Triple Toe-Double Toe combination, she had a double hands down on the first jump, and didn't have a great landing on the second jump.

Then we had a moment of brightness, when she did a beautiful Double Axel. But it went back to the horror story. She fell on her first Triple Salchow. Then she singled out her second Triple Salchow. Needless to say, she wasn't able to put a combination onto either of them. By the second Triple Salchow, you could see her heart just wasn't in it any more.

For the rest of the programme, it was spins. And for the most part, these went fine. She was a bit wobbily on the Flying Sit Spin, which prompted Judge 4 to give her a -2. But the others were kinder, giving her 1's and 0's.

All in all, a programme that I hope she forgets about. But, I can tell you something. When it is done clean, it will be absolutely beautiful. It is beautiful music, and Jenni is a beautiful skater.

Jenni finished the Free Skate in the middle of a tight group of 3 skaters who were covered by just 0.48 points. Anastasia GOZHVA (UKR) was 0.44 points ahead of Jenni, while Taylor MORRIS (ISR) was 0.04 behind her. Ahead of Gozhva there were 4.08 points to Gabriella IZZO (USA) in 14th, and behind Morris there were 2.50 points to Niki WORIES (NED) in 18th.

Overall, Jenni finished 4.40 points behind her Finnish team-mate, Emmi PELTONEN in 8th, and 3.38 points ahead of Kristina ISAEV (DEU) in 10th.

Jenni finished 19th out of 36 in the SP, with a score of 58.93.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Pity about the double hands down on the Triple Salchow. But, apart from that, there is only one thing I can say:

Beautiful. Just beautiful.

Simon was right. You didn't want it to end.

She may have had some disaster skates in her time, but when she is on for, she is exquisite. And she was exquisite today.

Easily goes into the lead. Meaning that my kids are currently 1-2.

:cheer: WELL DONE JENNI!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

The other kid of mine that I was referring to in that statement was Aleksandra GOLOVKINA (LTU), who would eventually end up as the final qualifier for the Free Skate.

Although Jenni would soon lose the lead to Anastasiia GUBANOVA (GEO), it would be another 11 skaters before anybody else got ahead of her.

Now that I have looked at the protocols, there isn't really anything I can add to my initial comments. As expected, the Triple Salchow drew minuses all round. But, everything else was positive.

Jenni is currently in an Estonian sandwich! She is 0.23 points behind 15th position, Eva-Lotta KIIBUS, and 0.63 points ahead 17th position, Niina PETROKINA. They are part of a much larger group that stretches from Viktoriia SAFONOVA (BLR) in 8th position, 4.14 points ahead of Jenni, down to Regina SCHERMANN (HUN) in 22nd position, 4.50 points behind Jenni. And, although there is a bit of a gap, the final two skaters are within 2 points of Schermann. So, basically, anybody could finish anywhere!

So, here's hoping for a good Free Skate!

:cheer: WELL DONE JENNI!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start at 18:38:10 EET (16:38:10 GMT). So 11 hours from now.

Jenni will be the 9th skater to start. So, third skater in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 19:32:40 EET (17:32:40 GMT). So 11h 54m from now.

Jenni is due to start at 19:55:50 EET (17:55:50 GMT). So 12h 17m from now.

Jenni finished 25th out of 30 in the SP, with a score of 56.97.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Beautiful, but unfortunately not perfect.

I think the occasion got to her.

Oh Simon, don't say she mightn't qualify!

That close-up shot of her at the end of the programme that they showed in the highlights was heartbreaking. At least there wasn't any tears.

She takes an 8.29 point lead over Shabotova.

CaroLiza_fan

Fortunately, Jenni did qualify for the Free Skate. Although, when going through the results table at the end of the broadcast, Simon Reed was still confused with what was happening. So, I posted the following in response:

Simon: "I bet Jenni Saarinen is glad Kamila Valieva did compete, because she got through because of it"

Erm, maybe he should think about it a bit harder.

If Kamila hadn't competed, there would have been 1 less person in front of Jenni. So Jenni would have been 24th. And therefore she would have got through via the normal Top 24 going through rules.

These revised rules mean Kamila being there or not made no difference whatsoever to Jenni going through or not. Which is exactly what the revised rules were designed for.

CaroLiza_fan

Now that that is all cleared up, let's get back to Jenni's Short Programme.

She had a shakey start. The opening element was a combination. But, she didn't have a great landing on the first part of it and, as Simon said in commentary, it was actually a "Triple Toe-Triple Toe with an extra turn in the middle". Chris Howarth elaborated explaining that "her weight wasn't over the right side on that first one, so there was nothing she could do apart from put that turn in between them". The Judges didn't like it, with five of them giving her -1, and the other three giving her -2. In terms of GOE, she was given -0.54.

It was the next element, the Salchow, that was the most costly. She had a pop, which resulted in her doing a Double rather than the required Triple. It was invalidated, so she got absolutely nothing for it.

Jumps getting invalidated because there were not enough rotations is one thing I really hate about the rules. At least give the skaters points for what they did manage to do! The Base Value for a Double Salchow is 1.30 points. Yes, Jenni would have got minus GOE and minus marks from the Judges because it wasn't a great Double Salchow because of the pop. But, at least she would have been getting something.

Anyway, after that everything was beautiful. And the GOE and the marks from the Judges reflected that. Lafge positive GOE on everything, and lots of +2's and +3's from the Judges. Judge 8 even gave her a +4 for her third element, the Flying Sit Spin. And she got extra credit for her fourth element, the Double Axel, because it was in the second half of the programme.

Jenni is currently 2.11 points behind 24th position, Ekaterina KURAKOVA (POL), and 4.57 points ahead of 26th position, Josefin TALJEGÅRD (SWE).

As Jenni is the last to qualify for the FS, it is the gaps ahead of her that matter. And after the initial gap to Kurakova, it is very tight. There is just 2.74 points covering 16th position, Ekaterina RYABOVA (AZE), to Kurakova in 24th position. Ryabova is 4.85 points ahead of Jenni.

So, if Jenni puts in as good a Free Skate as we know she is capable of, there is potential to move significantly up the order.

:cheer: WELL DONE JENNI!!! :cheer:

Jenni finished 25th out of 25 in the FS, with a score of 96.07. This meant that she remained in 25th place overall, with a score of 153.04.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the start of the segment:

This is going to be a really exciting start to the segment for me. My kid up first, followed immediately by Little Miss Sunshine!!! ☀️

CaroLiza_fan

And here is what I wrote in the competition thread after Jenni skated:

When Jenni fell on the first 2 elements, I started getting horrible flashbacks to Elizabeth Golding last week.

Thankfully, things started coming together. But then she had another fall.

I had high hopes. 14th position was only 5 points ahead of her after the SP. But, the pressure got to her.

She's disappointed coming off the ice. But, at least there's no tears.

Urgh, Simon again saying that she's only in the FS because of Valieva being here. Clearly nobody has explained to him what I said when he came out with the same rubbish at the end of the SP.

Did I miss a fall? She got 4 points in deductions.

96.07 points in the FS, and 153.04 points overall.

It's not the way she would have wanted her Olympic debut to go, but I'm sure things will go better at her next event.

CaroLiza_fan

For the benefit of those that were not watching the Junior Ladies competitions at the Winter Star in Minsk last week, Irish skater Elizabeth Golding started her SP with falls on her first 3 elements. And then in the FS, she had a stumble on her first element, a fall on her second, and 2 more falls later on in the programme. So, you can understand why she popped into my head during Jenni's Olympic Free Skate.

Jenni's first fall was on the Triple Flip. Understandably, she got big minus GOE and -5's from all the Judges. The problem is that it was supposed to be a Triple Flip combination. So, when she immediately tried again and fell again, that meant that she had a repeated element. She did manage to get it round to the correct quarter, but that wasn't enough to avoid getting the same minus GOE.

Although she stayed upright on her third element, the Triple Lutz, she didn't have a great landing. She landed it on the correct quarter, but got minus GOE and minus marks from all the Judges (although, fortunately, not as big as she got for the falls).

The fourth element, the Double Axel-Triple Toe combination, was clean. But, that was followed by her third fall, which was on a Triple Toe on it's own. And because this was the third fall, she got an extra point in deductions, because the ISU like to rub salt in the wound whenever somebody is having a disaster skate (thank you to @Princessroja for reminding me of that rule).

After that, things went more smoothly. She even got credit for doing her Double Axel-Double Toe combination in the second half. But, the damage had already been done.

Jenni finished the Free Skate 4.08 behind 24th position, Alexandra FEIGIN (BUL). Overall, she finished 6.27 points behind Feigin.

And if you are wondering what happened to Ekaterina KURAKOVA (POL), who started the day off 2.11 points ahead of Jenni, she had a VERY good Free Skate, climbing from 24th in the SP to 12th in the FS and overall.

This Free Skate is not how Jenni will want to have ended her Olympic debut with. However, she doesn't have to wait long until she has a chance to have a redemption skate. She is on the Provisional Entry List for the Challenge Cup, which will be held next week in Tilburg, the Netherlands.

So, hopefully things will go much better next time we see her.

Jenni finished 3rd out of 16 in the SP, with a score of 57.48.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Fall on the first jump. Hand down on the second jump. But the third jump was absolutely beautiful!

Yep, that's Jenni in a nutshell.

When you put those couple of mistakes to one side, everything was beautiful. But, the mistakes will be costly. Especially when she is in a battle for the slot at Worlds, and one of the other contenders is coming up later.

Ach, for goodness sake. Technical difficulties mean that she is having to wait longer. Yeah, have a drink while you wait. You may as well. We've already seen today how long these delays can take.

Mmmm. TES and PCS almost identical. 29.12 TES, and 29.36 PCS.

Into the lead with a score of 57.48.

:cheer: WELL DONE JENNI!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Looking at the protocols, they agree with what I said. She got minuses all round for the first two elements (THe Triple Toe-Triple Toe combination that she fell on, and the Triple Salchow), but there were no minuses for all her subsequent elements. Well, her Layback Spin got three 0's from the Judges, and four +1's. But everything else was in the +2's and +3's, with her Double Axel even getting a +4 from Judge 7 (that was the jump I said was absolutely beautiful).

In terms of GOE, the aforementioned Layback Spin only got +0.4, but every thing else got over half a point added on. And, yes, the Double Axel got the most, with +0.99 GOE. It also got extra credit for being in the second half.

Jenni is currently 0.98 points behind 2nd position, Júlia LÁNG (HUN), and 2.61 points ahead of 4th position, Lindsay THORNGREN (USA). Lindsay is actually at the head of a group where 10 skaters are covered by 4.64 points. This stretches down to Jade HOVINE (BEL) in 13th position. The leader, Rino MATSUIKE (JPN) is out of reach, being 15.75 points ahead of Júlia and 16.73 points ahead of Jenni.

Oona OUNASVUORI, who is one of the skaters battling with Jenni to get the Finnish slot at Senior Worlds, is in the middle of that big group. She is in 8th position, 5.83 points behind Jenni.

If Jenni has a good Free Skate, she has very good chance of getting ahead of Júlia. HOWEVER, Jenni's main priority in the Free Skate must be to make sure she stays ahead of Oona.

:cheer: WELL DONE JENNI!!! :cheer:

The Ladies FS is due to start at 11:45:00 CET (10:45:00 GMT / 12:45:00 EET). So 5 hours from now.

Jenni will be the 14th skater to start. So, fourth skater in Group 3 (and antepenultimate skater altogether).

As there is no Time Schedule, I do not know what time she is due to start.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.
