The sad thing is...I really DO think Chan has improved on his presentation abilities in the Long Program. And I like the program a lot. But you shouldn't win like that.

Both the scoring system and the judges are at fault for the result. The scoring system sucks because, aside from rules that usually make programs less effective, mistakes mean almost nothing anymore. If you land a spectacular Quad and fall on your next Quad, you end up with pretty much the same amount of points as someone else who landed two "average" Quads. That's just not right...and it's what Chan benefits from. He gets huge scores for the elements he does execute, which makes his mistakes mean nothing.

The scale of values for GOE needs to be reversed. Mistakes on jumps (-GOE) should be taking away 2x as many points as they currently do, and +GOE on jumps should only be worth about 70% of what it currently is.

And judges seriously need to stop giving out +3's like candy.

Yeah I totally agree.

To find a positive vibe, apart from Javier's world medal, if one week ago someone told me DTen would challenge Chan for the world title I would laugh for ten hours. And yet it happened, thats why it is magic to watch fs. If he had won him it would have been mythical though.

Agree Blades of Passion that Patrick has tried to focus on artistry this season, which is not a bad thing (although many of his fans have been endlessly moaning and groaning about his artsy guru, Kathy Johnson). I do think that Patrick has improved a bit, but he's still overly self-conscious and studied in his movements intended by him to convey artistry. OTOH, Patrick's SS come naturally to him and he doesn't have to think about them.

But that's the difference. Skaters extraordinaire like Dai, Denis, Abbott, Savoie, Cranston, Lambiel, Weir, Curry, Browning, Sawyer, Robin Cousins, Jason Brown -- they all have artistry and musical interpretation that is as natural to them as breathing. Not so for Patrick Chan.

What were some of you (with FAR more expertise than me) expecting PC's freeskate score to be? I was trying to guesstimate based on those that had gone before, and his pedigree and the parts of his skate that WERE really beautiful- and i was guessing/expecting 158-160; but not 169.

What a competition for Denis Ten. He was brilliant. Congrats to Patrick, Denis and Javier!

Shout out to Hanyu for coming back great in the FS that took guts and determination!

No words for Dai, being a uber I wished it turned out differently for him but thats the way of Sport.

Well, I'd say it's not so magical to watch a major splatfest among the men, but once again, good effort to try and put a positive slant on the results. Even doubling a few jumps, Denis Ten should have prevailed over craptastic fp by Patrick Chan.

Of all the pcs categories I have read all the bullet points and don't see why chan's so great! Like MUST you be in the rink to hear his blade/ice silence or something? And see his speed in person. So much where falling twice fails to impact the performance pcs??

don't you know? he captivates you with the fire in his eyes. :sarcasm:

I thought it deserved about 155, and had he been wearing a mask of any other skater is exactly the score it would have been, but since it is Chan I would have guessed 170 (which it roughly was).

Does anyone know which countries the judges, technical controller and technical specialists are from? I tried finding it but the ISU web page states the judges but under Nations says ISU...when was the ISU considered a nation? :bang:

Still crying over Daisukes result, tbh. Where are you Daisuke lovers? Let's wail! Only 6th in his last Worlds! This is worth crying over.

Concerning PChan - where are those banana-plushy-throwing fans when you need them? Kind of happy that Kevin Reynolds didn't make it to the podium. I don't know this whole event left me unsatisfied almost like 4CC just a little better. Even if I'm short of getting lynched by saying this but I didn't think Denis Ten was that amazing either.......

Canada didn't have a judge, but it had someone on the tech team (Finland and Hungary were the other two nations with representatives)

Let us hope that he peaks at the Olympics next year. We need to hold a prayer circle, tbh.

I'd score it around 160-161 myself. So assuming that ptf and I represent a range, lets call it 158.

Uhhh, I think that's more the way of figure skating that doesn't have any credibility, since Dai should be the defending World champion from last year. It's also the way of trying to go back to a latter-day Morozov's iffy influence. It's also the way of having to put too many quad demands on a jump-injured aging body.

Every other year he does great so hopefully the pattern will continue.

I'm all for it. On the other hand I'm so afraid that the judges, after theses last 2 competitions, don't see him as a favourite anymore and moved on.
