Doppio Axel is an Italian figure skating magazine, which has a facebook account.

They recently announced on facebook that Ivan Bariev, who competed for Russia, intends to skate for Italy:

Ivan Bariev sceglie l'Italia!
Continuate a seguirci!

With the help of Google translate:

Ivan Bariev choose Italy! The 22 year old, who was born in Moscow to a Russian mother and an Italian father, has informed the Italian Federation of Sport of his intention to ice skate for Italy from next season.

But many other innovations lie ahead on the horizon of the new and important Olympic season! The new issue of Double Axel has more information! Stay tuned!

If his father is Italian, as the article says, citizenship should not be an issue.

Although he can't qualify for the Olympics in men's, since he last skated for Russia at Cup of Nice in October 2012, finishing fifth, I think he should be able to skate for Italy in the Olympics for the Team event, would he not?

Italy has Cappellini & LaNotte, Berton & Hotarek, and, of course, Carolina Kostner, so they will surely qualify for the team event.

The biggest problem for Bariev is getting a release from the Russian federation, I would think?

Bariev is hot! http://www.fashionbank.ru/blogs/userblog/97477/ Who wouldn't want to have such a dude in K&C at Team Event at Oly, assuming that Russia let him go? But even if they will, he still will have to stay in the "quarantine" till the end of October, which means he won't be able to fight for a spot. So, someone else will get that only spot for Italy and the same person, and no one else, can fight at Team Event at Oly. The same situation with Plu in Team Russia, that's why they wanted to get the second spot that much. Therefore, it's all more about Ivan's future after Sochi than for the next season I guess. And, if Russia doesn't let him go, then he will be in the "quarantine" for two years. For now Piseev told R-media that they didn't get ay request from Bariev: http://rsport.ru/figure_skating/20130501/659948745.html
His last appearance at RN was in 2012 where he ranked 6th overall:

FS (4th): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGgg01wEzOU

:slink: Somehow when a rule affects both Russia & Italy badly in the team competition, I would not be surprised if somehow the rules for the qualification for that team spot changed, given the fact that Cinquanta is the boss & Russia is a very powerful federation. & Japan might like some help in pairs, too ....

I see deals being made in my tarot card deck ;) in the future.

Hmmm... I think that there is a good future for Italian men skating: Dario Betti, world roller skating champion (watch his FS from 2012 worlds here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgfZHeqTP7Y) is training to compete on the ice, and now Bariev... Let's hope!

I'm not a follower of the sport, but it does seem as though the transition to ice wouldn't be an unthinkable proposition.

He is "leading man" handsome; I'll give him that.

I bet you're right, Doris.

To your point, TontoK, Tara Lipinski started out as a roller skater. Maybe the skills do transfer.

I very much doubt that he would be able to transfer to skating successfully even if he can do some jumps, his skating skills would be hideous based off that video.

That is very interesting, artistic roller skating. Wonder which one is more difficult in terms of jumps. Roller skating probably costs less to train.

Caydee and Haven Denney also were roller-skaters, I'm pretty sure. Whether or not anyone likes them on the ice, their competition results have been respectable (at the very least). I recall hearing or reading that their mother (also a roller-skater) eventually steered them toward ice skating because roller-skating is not an Olympic sport.

I'm a roller figure skater  And I can tell you that in roller figure skating jumps are MUCH more difficult, because of the weight of the skates (I am also a recreational ice skater so I tried to jump on ice, too, and I know the difference), so you don't see quads or 3A very often on roller skates... About the money, yes, the training is less expensive most of the times... I am planning to create a thread about roller skating, so you can discover this "parallel skating world"...

Russia would be crazy to relese him. he hasn't done a quad but what if he learned one in Italy and could be as clean as he's been with all triples? I can see why a person woke leave because it doesn't matter how kovtun skates he's always being sent places. He's bombed competition after competition as a senior in a majorly embarrassing way and it doesn't matter! "Send him to euros send him to worlds eventually he'll jus stop bombing and be number One!!"

There is a possibility that an Italian man won't qualify for top 30 to skate SP Men at Oly. Then Italy can assign anyone as a Men at Team Event, including Bariev, if Russia let him go.
