According to this interview, Evgeni Plushenko plans on competing in both team and individual events in Sochi:
http://www.team-russia2014.ru/article/figur/10700.html

Keypoints from the interview:
- He thinks there is enough time in between the events to recover for the individual competition.
- He said it's great to have a team event.
- He is planning to compete in the GP in Moscow and some other national and international events, and also the European Championships
- He is now preparing his new programs at the base in Novogorsk, but didn't yet give any information about them
- He is not travelling to Israel for a scheduled check up by the doctor who did the back surgery as this doctor is coming to Russia and will see him there

I just really hope that he doesn't end up destroying himself with this.

The Russian Fed really weren't thinking about the broader picture when they sent Kovtun to Worlds, were they?

Comments from Alexei Mishin:
http://www.team-russia2014.ru/article/figur/10702.html

Keypoints:
- right now Plushenko is working with choreographers Maxim Staviski and David Avdysh
- Mishin's vision this season is to combine the art of skating and ballet art in the programs of his students and so they are working with Staviski (Plushenko) and Jeffrey Buttle (Lisa Tuktamysheva, Artur Gachinski) on the skating skills and with Avdish (Plushenko) and Anton Piminov as well as Juri Smekalov (both from the Marinskii Theatre; for Lisa and Artur) on the ballet/dance part.
- from June 17, Mishin's students will take part in the training camp in Pinzolo

Good thing that Plushenko is planning to compete in both team and individual events in Sochi. ;) Practically speaking, he does not have any other choice.

As previously discussed in other threads, Team Russia's one man who competes in the Sochi individual event is the only man who is eligible to compete in the men's portion of the team event.

If Plushenko is Russia's designated man for the Olympic individual event, and he does not compete in the team event, then Team Russia will have no man skating in the team event. Team Russia is not allowed to have a different man skate only in the team event.

Obviously Russia has only one entry in the men's event and there is no option for him to be substituted. I posted this information because there was some speculation (even from Russian skaters) that Plushenko, in case he gets to go to Sotchi, will skip the team event and focus on the individual event only in order to save strength. Russia of course would have been at a huge disadvantage without an entry in men's singles and would have been robbed of any medal chances. Maxim Trankov said that they won't do the team event either if no man is competing, because it would be pointless.
Now Plushenko has made it clear that he is willing to compete in both events. Actually I thought from the beginning that the Russian man, whoever it is, should focus on the team event as the chances to medal here should be quite good.

Okay. Let's say Plushenko DOES compete in the Team event. But during the free skate, he gets injured. He's now unable to skate the individual. Can Russia replace him for the individual event or is it a case of "too bad, so sad"?

Because if it's the latter, I dislike the team event even more.

Interesting question. I think he could be replaced before the draw was done like in other competitions.
I'll see if I find this information in the regulations for the Olympic Games published by the ISU.
There should be something as late withdrawals happen all the time with skaters getting sick or injured just before a competition.

I didn't find yet what I was looking for, but I found something else in the document on the qualification system for Sochi that is interesting:
"Also, the same NOCs/ISU Members must have their Skaters competing in all the competitions/disciplines of the Figure Skating Team event for which they have entries in the individual OWG competition/discipline. This means that if for example an NOC/Member has only one entry for a discipline/competition, this Skater or couple may not choose to skate only the individual OWG competition and skip the Figure Skating Team Event competition."

So Plushenko wouldn't have been able to "skip" the team event, but it is also mentioned in the document that a whole team can opt not to compete in the team event. So it is all or nothing for them.

Sorry, Tatjana, I should have been more clear in my previous post. Thank you for starting the thread and sharing the interview.
I did not mean to suggest that you were unaware of the team rules.

But from other threads, I have noticed that some members of GS are not yet familiar with all the team rules. (Totally understandable because Sochi will be the first Olympics to have the team event.) I was giving the full context in case it would be helpful to those individuals.

I hadn't known what Trankov said. Thanks for making us aware. :)

So does this mean that the competition for the men's slot at Sochi is over?

In Plushenko's interview, he always mentions that if his results from competitions were good, he hopes to participate in OG. So he still has to earn his spot.

As for the speculations regarding whether he would attend team event if he made it to the OG team, since Russia only has one spot, he has to (if he made it to the national OG team). But actually he talked about team events long before Russia lost the second spot. Right from the beginning he mentioned in several interviews that how cool to have team competition, and he probably would attend the team competition. So this is not new that he expressed interest in attending team event (of course, now, he has no choice).

Again it is moronic that the team competition is not the last skating event of the Olympics. That way at least the skaters could compete and not worry about getting hurt before the individual events.

agreed and not to mention skaters competing in TE can suffer burnout
skaters who have no TE like Kim Yuna just guaranteed her gold or even Javier

To be fair, though, I think Yuna would still win gold even if she did have to compete in a TE.

It the team event were last, then it could go the other way around. A skater could be injured in his attempt to medal in the individual competition, causing his team to lose because of his absence in the team competition.

In the past there was no team competition, so the individual medals were considered very important. Maybe that will switch around in the future, as the team event gets more traction.

For that matter, a skater might get run over by a bus on his way to practice and miss both.

Are they Olympic athletes? Suck it up! ;)

Beach volleyball players Misty May and Kerry Walsh, at the summer games, played grueling best-of-three set matches on July 28, July 30, August 1, August 3, August 4, August 5, August 6, August 7, and August 8.

Not exactly. He didn't say Staviski is working on SS with Plu. He mentioned only that Maxim is choreographing his new SP together with Avdysh. Pimenov choreographed Liza's SP, Smekalov- Artur's LP.

Jeffrey will visit the training camp in Italy for 5-6 days where he will work on SS with all three skaters- Plush, Liza, Artur.

Here is a more detailed interview on the official site of RusFed: http://fsrussia.ru/news/609_aleksej...ramm-my-privlekli-shirokij-krug-specialistov/

I actually posted all this information on Plu fan thread yesterday. But probably not everyone goes to that subforum.

In addition- Plu confired his participation in PIW in July in Tokyo where he plans to show one of his new competitive porgs, either SP or LP. :yay:

As for the Team Event in Sochi, Trankov probably doesn't know the rules. The only Russia's skater in Men must compete in Team Event, he can't skip it. And I agree with those who think that the schedule to have Team Event before Individuals is stupid. We should be grateful to NBC for that. Wasn't it reported that it was them who insisted on having Ladies event the last one because it's always the last and the most popular in the US?
