    Max Aaron

I just realised we don't have a Max Aaron thread. Rectified!

To start us off, here's his interview with The Skating Lesson. 50 minutes of fantastic Max, talking Carmen, hockey, a broken back, the two rings he really wants (one of them is NOT what you think ), life after skating and working on the whole package.

I first became interested in Max after seeing him skate at Nat'ls '12. It was his speed as much as anything that blew me away. Then I followed him throughout his summer '12 competitions & watched as his quad became more & more consistent. I knew he would medal this year but the gold was a surprise. After listening to this interview & learning he feels his natural skating talent is in speed skating I knew that was why this old woman felt the connection to him. Sixty years ago it was the sport I competed in! He's exciting, interesting, personable, talented, a breath of fresh air for US figure skating.

It has been a long road and was a thrill to see him break through at Nationals.

Was a little surprised to see him participate in The Skating Lesson interviews given the history of Jenny Kirk's partner - David Lease (apologies if not spelled correctly) who is known for his often scathing and negative commentary of skaters and gymnasts (especially those that he does not like, and there are many) on his blog, Aunt Joyce's Ice Cream Stand.

I guess good for him for standing for the opportunity but would not have been my advice.

He's hardly the first current skater to do it - Jeremy Abbott and Jason Brown have also done interviews on TSL. I haven't seen Jeremy's, but Jason's was in much the same vein as Max's: honest and funny. Including several attempts to convince us that he was a terrible kid (like anyone will believe him!) and a few rambling tangents, and a little discussion about Joshua Farris as a rival/notrival/friend/opponent/competition.

    @MaxTAaron
I'll be doing an AMA on Reddit on Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. ET! Looking forward to answering your questions!
    8:46 AM - 10 Jul 13 (GMT-07:00)
    https://twitter.com/MaxTAaron/status/354990005862666241

I had been wondering whether any skaters had ever done an AMA. The tweet in reply from USFS seems to indicate that Aaron will be the first American skater to do one.
    He is a great choice.

For anyone who is not familiar with Reddit, here is the link to the AMA ("Ask Me Anything") page:

Do you have to have reddit to participate?

I am not an expert on Reddit, but I am 99% sure that if you want to post a question, you will need to sign up for a Reddit account. [And with an account, you can vote for questions that you would like to see answered.]

If you do not have a Reddit account, you still will be able to read the questions (posted by others) and as many answers as Aaron provides. (Usually too many questions are posted for every single one to receive an answer.)

The Q and A content will remain on Reddit for posterity after the live event ends (i.e., after Aaron has signed off) -- so you will be able to read his answers after the fact.

I just made a reddit account, it's pretty easy, don't even need an email. After all, I want to be able to ask questions too!

Max Aaron reddit AMA link now is live:

ETA, his "proof of identity" photo for reddit :

    ETA (more):

Aaron responded to questions of all kinds from 11:00 am to 12:48 pm (ET), bless his soul.
His (approx.) 75 answers were terrific -- some serious and some witty. All showed a very positive attitude toward life as whole, as well as toward skating in particular.

Two of the best ones, IMHO:

    Q. How do you deal with nerves and what is the hardest aspect of overcoming these nerves? Love you so much!
    A. Love you back! I try and prepare myself so that there are no nerves. I enjoy figure skating so much, so why be nervous to do something you love. Life is too short to let nerves get in the way.

    Q. Are you in fact a closeted gay homosexual? I mean, how straight can you be wearing tights and doing ballet and stuff?
    A. Real men wear tights.
[Excellent answer to a ridiculous question. Go, Max!]

BTW, he said that he will be competing somewhere before Skate America, but he politely declined to name the event.

Well I already know it's not Skate DownUnder, Champs Camp has exactly the same dates. :(

Gotta love Aaron's versatility. Singles + Pairs + Ice Dance -- the guy can do it all :

He performs a cool dance-type lift with Piper Gilles in another Skate for Hope photo :

A better photo of Wagner/Aaron's pair lift:

Camerlengo also is in the photo of this sociable gang relaxing over an outdoor meal and beverages. (They are in Minnesota for Audrey Weisiger's G2C Super Camp. She also is in the photo.)

Nice that Aaron is the cover guy, and nice that Brown added his own shout-out to the one from USFS.

ETA, the caption from the cover: Leap of Faith / Aaron enters Olympic season with high expectations.

Three bonus photos from Aaron's cover shoot:

That picture of Max on the cover is especially fabulous!

I also love watching the skaters interact on social media. And then I just thought about all the skaters on the National Sessions at the World Arena - Joshua, Jason and Max just to start...that's a mind-boggling amount of talent on one sheet of ice.
