Aww, let's not tire Max out during the off season. ;)

:eek::

I have to confess my first mental reaction to that sentence was not PG rated.

I think you're more likely to see people crash into the boards after a fall, like Jeremy at Sochi or Joshua at 4CCs, than to straight-out hit the boards while skating. (I'd forgotten the Patrick incident.) Actually, I'm surprised Max was the only one to crash into the boards in competition at that Worlds; the rink was smaller than usual, apparently.

Is the Yagudin one you refer to the 4-3-2 combo? Because he totally just fell off the back of his blade. ;) Possibly spooked by the wall, but I'm not sure. (Aside: Oh, a 4-3-2 combo. Sigh. You never see those any more. Those were the glory days.) Oh, I wonder if Max could try a 4-3-2 one day?

Yeah, I was referring to the 4-3-2. Sorry, I swear I linked to the exact moment of that video... why the heck did the timestamp disappear? It looked like he slipped on the blade to me as well. However, the commentators said he "ran out of room and ran into the boards" on the replay (see: 5:50 ish). So  You can't see it here too well because of the camera angle, but Yagudin's quads always started so close to the barrier, and he got a lot of distance on them too. It's a wonder he didn't have a full-on crash.

I'd love to see Max do 4-3-2! Unfortunately, stupid COP doesn't reward quad combinations. It's "better" to do an easier three-jump combo past the halfway mark for bonus points, because you'd have to do 4-3-2 as the first jump and thus get no bonus. I mean, even Combo King Plushy (argh, bad nickname, sounds like a McDonald's special) decided to bow to COP in Sochi and do his three-jump combo that way.

On another note, he sure does love that waistcoat.

In contrast, a whole 'nother look for Max -- at a 2014 Skate for Hope rehearsal with Felicia Zhang and Caits Yankowskas.

BTW ... the 2014 production of Skate for Hope will donate $43,000 to cancer research. Congrats to all involved.

(Agree with your comment about Max's back. Hopefully he is vigilant to take esp. good care of it after the fractures that ended his hockey career.)

--------------

BTW, for posterity, I am copying here yesterday's post from Mathman re the USFS 2014 World team selections. It is from the Nagasu thread in The Edge. Thx, Mathman. I hope that the tally in your post once and for all has made Max's selection a complete non-issue.
(I always wished that the US men had three slots both for Sochi and for Worlds so that Abbott, Aaron, and Brown could have competed at both events. I hope it is obvious that I intend no hate or disrespect for Brown.)

...

The athlete selection procedure for the 2014 World Championships is as follows:
The winner in each discipline (ladies, men’s, pairs and ice dance) at the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Jan. 5-12, in Boston, will earn an automatic spot on the 2014 World Team. The remaining team members in each discipline will be selected by U.S. Figure Skating’s International Committee, taking into consideration the results of events in the following order of importance:
  • 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships
  • 2013 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final
  • 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships
  • 2013 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships
  • 2013 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships
  • 2013 ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final
Skaters who do not compete at the 2014 U.S. Championships due to injury or illness, but who meet the other criteria, may also be considered for selection.

Looking at the official criteria, it is hard to find fault with the decisions of the USFSA selection committee for 2014 Worlds.

Abbott: U.S. Nationals, 1st. Automatic for Worlds.
Aaron: U,S. Nationals 3rd, 2013 Four Continents 4th, 2013 Worlds 7th
Brown: U.S. Nationals 2nd, 2013 Jr. Worlds 2nd.

...

If I didn't miss something, these are the only results that count, with U.S. Nationals weighted the heaviest and with International senior result weighted more than junior results.

Photo of Aaron, Nagasu, Rogozine, Flatt, and Mroz at the autograph table at the Air Force Academy skating camp led by Tom Z, which starts tomorrow.
ETA, the remaining face is former USA pair skater Nick Kole, per the Facebook caption for the same photo.

ETA, supplies of Max's two photo cards from Edea Skates are visible in front of him on the table. :)

Another photo of Aaron, Nagasu, Rogozine, and Flatt:

Another one of Max:

Shamelessly shallow ;) comment: In all of these photos, Max's hair looks a little different ... maybe a new summer 'do?

Tom Z previously had announced that Aaron and Flatt would be teaching at the AFA camp. I wonder whether these photos means that Nagasu and the others will too.

ETA, eighty skaters from across the USA as well as Canada and Italy are attending the camp.

The top U.S. men -- Dornbush 11th and Aaron 12th -- are separated by just eight points. ...

Just now noticing at this late date that Dornbush misidentified the stat to which he was referring back in May. He intended to say that he and Max were the highest two U.S. men in the ISU World Standings.

OTOH, Max, Jeremy, and Jason were the top three U.S. men in the ISU Season's World Rankings published on Apr 3.

12 1361 Max AARON 574 324 213 250 0
13 1347 Jeremy ABBOTT 787 324 236 0 0
14 1328 Jason BROWN 517 324 262 225 0

17 1257 Richard DORNBUSH 551 262 262 182 0

22 1054 Adam RIPPON 402 360 292 0 0

27 961 Joshua FARRIS 496 262 0 203 0

29 939 Nathan CHEN 405 284 250 0 0

Meanwhile, going back to the ISU World Standings, here were the total points for the U.S. men as of May 21:

11 2149 Richard DORNBUSH
12 2141 Max AARON

17 1996 Jason BROWN

20 1782 Jeremy ABBOTT
21 1707 Joshua FARRIS

Briefest of mentions re Max's upcoming appearance in the Sun Valley ice show on Sat Jul 19. (Most of the article is about his training mate Mirai, who has top billing.)

ETA:
At long last ... Max's name finally has been added :) to the main schedule overview page that covers all Sun Valley ice shows -- as of Jul 18, just in time for Saturday's show. Previously the main page listed only Mirai's name for Jul 19, although the ticket page for Jul 19 did include Max's name (as discovered by dardar at FSU a good while back).
But Sun Valley has the wrong years in his mini-bio: "2013 US Bronze Medalist; 2012 US Gold Medalist." :eek:hwell:
Mirai's mini-bio also is odd: "US Olympic Competitor; 2x US Bronze Medalist." No mention that she also was US Gold Medalist.

I started a thread in The Edge for the new article about Max by McCarvel.

It sounds as if Max's head is in a good place. :yay:

Maybe we should start a game of Six Degrees of Max Aaron. ;)

Max was definitely on the rosters to compete at Vail this year. But we didn't hear anything last year and I'm not expecting to hear this year, either.

Glad to get confirmation from the article that the waiting for Max news from Vail is over. The circumstantial evidence had been piling up that he must have changed his mind about competing there, although he was on the rosters.

The Colorado Championships will be a family affair for the Aarons, if Maddie and Max S. still are planning to compete there, as the GS article about them had said.
