The Shibutanis sometimes tweet in Japanese. I don't know for sure, but my hunch is that they have some ability in both speaking and writing. Whether they are fluent is a separate question.
But the real reason that I'm responding to your question is that it is a good excuse to make note that Jason Brown is studying Japanese, per an Aug 28 tweet from him.

It's always nice to see skaters learning new things like languages outside of skating.
Thanks! IceNetwork articles always seem to indicate that their lives are strictly skating and little else.
