Day Two information

Tonight's action form Oberstdorf will see Brendan Kerry begin his quest to receive an Olympic spot for Australia- something that we haven't seen since Anthony Liu in Salt Lake City (That was ELEVEN years ago). There are 34 competitors, 28 of those are seeking one of the six remaining spots to Olympics.

The Men's Short Program begins at 4:30pm AEST.
Brendan will be skating in Group 5 (Second to last group) which is at about 8:00pm AEST.

In the evening (Early Saturday Morning for us) is the Ladies' Free Program starting at 1:55am AEST and the first of the three events we have our eyes on. Brooklee Han will be skating the Group 5 which will be at just before 6:00am Saturday Morning.

How well did you think team Australia performed today? How well do you think they will perform on day 2? Please have your say and comment below :)

ALSO, the International Skating Union (ISU) has provided a live feed to the event, which is a step in the right direction.

Aussie ice dancers deliver

"In a blistering performance full of bounce and attack, Australian ice dancers Danielle O’Brien and Greg Merriman delivered the performance of their careers so far in the Short Dance segment of the Winter Olympic Qualifying event in Germany this morning, scoring 50.52 points, leaving them in 6th place overall and more importantly third of the countries still to qualify for Sochi 2014..."

Brendan's turn now. The last skater had a great skate, fingers crossed he has one too!
Beautiful edge work- lots of speed
Wonderful on the Triple Lutz combo
Great on the triple axel- it's almost become his bread and butter jump
Good spins- difficult positions, fast rotations and nice to look at
Great on the step sequence- could use his upper body a tad more- more dynamic movement needed and should work on getting down into the knees.
The crowd love him
Well done!!

Hold on to your hats....67.97????? 67!!!!! Wow!

Me too. It's exciting that these skaters are willing to push themselves. Coaching changes to the United States have also contributed to this improvement. I hope that these improvements will encourage more Australian skaters to push and see that it is possible to make it if they are willing to put the work into it!

Men's Short Program

Skater: Brendan Kerry

This short program was such a great skate for him. He managed to execute everything so well, with great speed and power. It is also great that he is using his edges to generate speed- it's both effective and aesthetically pleasing.

His triple lutz-triple toeloop combination had great speed and control throughout, the triple axel had that snap which we all know and love. I thought that he should've put in the triple flip instead of the triple loop but since he does the Junior Grand Prix (and this season, all Junior skaters have to do a loop jump) it's understandable. He also received levels 3s and 4s for the spins and step sequences. Technically, to take it to the next level he and his coaching team need to look at the GOE criteria and find out what they can do so he can squeeze out more points!

His components have also seen a massive boost- especially his skating skills. His use of his edges and his knees have helped boost that mark. I felt that some of the judges under marked Brendan (one of the judges awarded him only a 4.75 for transitions...CRAZY!). In saying that, in order for Brendan to improve he needs to integrate more intricate choreography and use more facial expression to try and better portray and interpret what his program is about. His transitions are already difficult and he can transition well but he can benefit by reaching out to the audience better instead of looking like he's thinking through his program. If he can do this, his performance/execution, choreography and Interpretation components can improve!

Nevertheless, he had the moment and he was richly rewarded for it. Well done!

At this point, Australia has a shot of making the team event, and Japan has a chance of not making it...who would have thought?

Congratulations to the Aussie skaters on a great first day at Nebelhorn

Brooklee Han secures Olympic quota place

"Brooklee Han skated her heart out on Day 2 of the Nebelhorn Trophy, securing Australia a place in the ladies’ individual figure skating for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Her result in the free program meant that she finished in overall fifth place – but most importantly, first out of non-qualified competitors. With only six spots on offer, Han ensured Australia would continue its proud history of figure skating at the Winter Olympics..."

Ladies' Free Skate

Skater: Brooklee Han
Score After SP: 48.74

Qualification Status: 5th/29 Skaters

What a skate from Brooklee! She went out there and showed what she is capable of and because of that, she has booked a spot for Australia in the Ladies' event at the Olympics. Unlike her short program, she showed that determination and that fight we saw in her last season.

Technically, she is much improved- so much so that her Technical Elements score was higher than skaters who finished higher than her! All the elements were performed with good speed, fluidity and flow. As always, her spins were fantastic with speed, flexibility and an ease in transitioning in, throughout and out of the spins. Her step sequences also demonstrated her musicality, flexibility and her ability to perform difficult steps and turns in time with the music. Most of her jumps were cleanly skated, except she did pop her Triple Salchow (but she later got it in combination with with two double toeloops) and she got an edge deduction for her solid looking triple lutz. In my opinion, Brooklee doesn't need to add any new jumps into the program- what she can improve on is the flow of her combination jump elements- she comes into the jump with such attack but when she goes for the next jump it slows down.

Her presentation, again, was much improved and super to watch. She has this gentle, open and flowing style to her skating. The composition of this program was great and she effectively used her facial expressions, extensions and movements to interpret the music. As the Olympics approaches, some things that Brooklee can do to improve this second mark is to try and integrate more intricate choreography into the program so the story/mood she is trying to create can come out clearer. She can also work on her transition component- she had some difficult transitions but it would be great to see her push herself further.

Overall, a great performance, which in my opinion, Australians will like a lot when we see her on TV at Sochi 2014.
