Also, after coming off a solid performacnce at the Nebelhorn Trophy where she secures a spot for Australia in the Olympics, Brooklee Han will be looking to improve and get more reception for her programs as well as receive more ranking points.

Countdown to Sochi

Dani and Greg alongside World No. 2 Aeriel skier David Morris and up and coming Alpine skier Greta Small are having a live hangout on Thursday 4pm AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time).

Click the link below to find out how you can chat or ask a question to Dani and Greg!

A big thanks to the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) for organising this.

#AspiretoSochi

If you want to chat but are stuck on questions, here are a few areas you can ask
-How they began skating/skating together
-Things they have in common/pet peeves
-Canterbury Ice Rink, coaches, how it differs to training facilities overseas
-How it was like pre 2010 to compete/frustration of not being able to move up in the Ice dance world
-2009 Nebelhorn Trophy (Greg had to withdraw from the Olympic Qualifier because of a sudden heart sac infection)
-Their Aboriginal Original Dance
-Not being able to make the Vancouver Olympics
-The process of transitioning from training in Sydney to training in Detroit
-Detroit Skating Club/Pasquale and Anjelika/Massimo Scali etc./Working with training mates such as Kaitlyn/Andrew, Nathalie/Fabian, Madison/Zachary etc.--How do they push you?
-What they do off the ice
-2012 Worlds and qualifying to skate the FD for the first time
-The 2012-13 season (Lots of travel, the introduction of the minimum technical element score and their battle to get it- the disappointment for not making it to 2013 Worlds.)
-What they did on their off season to try and improve in order to qualify at Nebelhorn
-Their experience at 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy
-The competition day preparation (What they do the morning of competition/before their group goes on warmup)
-Their take on the current state of skating (TV coverage) and the scoring system
-The kiss and cry experience- Greg seems to be quite the character--funny faces, jokes Greg's shot gun if they made
a mistake etc.
-Conception and the development of their Circus themed Free Dance-- how their 2012-13 version differs from 2013-14 version. What are they trying to portray? How are they going to develop it from now to next competition?
-'Your journey up to this point has definitely been one of disappointments and frustrations. Its never easy you train and compete in ice dance, representing a nation that is so isolated from the ice dance world. Did you ever wish that your skating was able to be nurtured in a way similar to those in big skating nation?/

etc. those types of questions. Unfortunately I won't be able to do this chat as I don't use twitter or google+ but i hope some of you might take it up.

Just a friendly reminder. There is going to be a google chat with Ice Dance champions Danielle Obrien and Gregory alongside other Australia Olympic hopefuls tomorrow at 4pm AEST time . There is a link a couple of posts above this post. Follow the links and find out how to join in or at least ask a question.

Promos for the olympics in Australia have put alot of emphasis on freestyle skiing and snowboarding and not much on anything else- especially figure skating, so it would be great if you cqould give Dani and Greg some love and support. Thanks

Just watched the replay of the google hangout with ice dance champions Danielle O'brien and Gregory Merriman alongside Australian Aeriel skiier David Morris (who is currently ranked second in the world) and up and coming alpine skiier Greta Small. It was a short but great interview. Dani and Greg look like such nice and honest people. Great Sportspeople to represent Australia.

In the interview they were asked about their thoughts of making it to Sochi, Nebelhorn (both 2009 and 2013), training in Detroit (and more interestingly, how they got from training in Sydney to Detroit) and what they think are their chances of making it past the short dance event in Sochi next year.

There is a link to the article and video below.
Please check it out!

Does Chantelle earn ranking points for this comp? Can this help us in our Team Event Quest?

Good luck ladies!

Good luck ladies!

Unfortunately, chantelle cant earn any points from this. Only 2013 championship events and 2013-14 grand prix events count. The points system is quite confusing but ukraine and great britain are too strong at the moment for Australia. maybe Pyongchange 2018 we might get lucky

Chantelle is next. Fingers crossed

Not a bad job Chantelle. A hand down on the triple toe but the rest was good- nice triple loop attempt also. Her music is very nice to listen to and its quite a well known song. All the best.

In two very tight and competitive fields Chantelle sits in 9th after the SP at Ondrej Nepela and Brooklee sits in 11th after the SP at JGP Czech Republic.

Brooklee Han takes on Junior Grand Prix

FIGURE SKATING: Just days after her outstanding performance in Oberstdorf to qualify for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, Brooklee Han is back on the ice, competing in the Junior Grand Prix in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The 18-year-old is sitting in 11th position after the short program of the ladies' individual, earning 47.09 for her efforts. Han was not able to replicate her personal best performance of 48.74 that she scored in the Olympic Qualifying Event, although she did score a higher Technical Elements Score (TES) than in Germany, which is a promising sign for her future competitions.

Han will now be looking to produce a strong free program to try and lift her position to the top-ten or top-five . The free skate will take place on Saturday 5 October at 10.30am in the Czech Republic - 6.30pm AEST.

More to come, after the conclusion of the free program.

I agree. He does have a great extension, knees, edges and flow. He can also interpret the music pretty well. Some more speed and power and working on softening the landings on his jumps will do him no harm. I'm excited when he begins to push himself with his jumps and transitions though. If he can work on those things, he could easily put some pressure on Brendan (Who I hope will have his quad toe ready soon!)

David is still fifth with one group to go!

From the looks of the rest of the field, he could very well be fifth after the shortprogram is over. If he can stay clean in the long, he could move up to fourth overall. The skater from the Czech Repubic who is in fourth has lower components than David and since the value of components are doubled in the free, David can make up that deficit, provided that he skates clean.

If David finishes top 5, does this mean ranking points?
