CarolLiza_fan, thanks for supplying the adjective for Belarus. I'm old enough to remember the name Byelorussia, and its adjective. I'm glad the new adjective is constructed the same way.
You make a good point about the fact that that Daria, whether "our" Daria or not, is someone's daughter. I got a feeling of such dissonance from her writing. I am so strongly aware of a deep wound.
On a nicer note, it's great contemplating Michelle's many tasks and activities. There's something so lovely in watching a young person who's been able to find and maintain her footing out in the world. I'll have to go check out the MK forum. Thanks for the spoonful of sugar after the bitter scent we've been taking in on this thread.
Daria is not a public figure. She has not sought or invited our scrutiny. Just saying...

Thanks so much, Math! A treasure box of news and tidbits.
The last link, the ESPN one, had an interesting observation by Michelle. Instead of saying, "I worked extremely hard while I was training for skating," she pointed out that during that time the efforts of everyone, from her coach to her choreographer to her parents, to herself, were concentrated on her. That's an understanding that is unusually healthy for a star athlete to have. I don't imagine I'm going to stop being an MK fan anytime soon.
One more question about Liza Kulik: when are the Southwest Pacific Regional Championships this year? That will be her qualifying competition for Nationals, as it was last year, where she barely missed qualifying. Thanks in advance to anyone who knows!
And I just looked at last year's results again, and wow Liza had bad luck. Yes, she missed the CR by one placement, but she was 5th in her QR...and had the 5th highest score of all the Juvenile girls. Her score in another group would have pushed her to the CR.
Watching her skate from last year again makes me want her to make it further next year.
Liza competed in the Pasadena Open this past weekend and landed her first double axel there: http://kuliksskating.com/events/pasadena-open.html
So, in the SWP regionals last year, there were 4 qualifying rounds in Liza's level. Top 4 from each QR made the Championship Round for a total of 16 girls. Top 4 from the CR went to Sectionals.
Liza was 5th in her QR and thus didn't progress further. It sucks because she had the 5th highest score of all the Juvenile girls, which is something that makes me not like QR even though I understand it's otherwise hard to organize that many girls into competition segments.
You would think it would occur to people that now that skaters get an actual numerical score, they could just use the score from the qualifying round to choose the top qualifiers. This might mean three skaters from one group and seven from the other, but it's better to be fair than symmetrical.
