Among other endeavors, Sarah Hughes is a leader (along with Mark Messier, for example) of a huge project that will bring a ginormous ice complex to the Bronx, NY.

    April 2013 press release:
Mayor Bloomberg Announces Plans To Transform Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx Into World's Largest Indoor Ice Facility
Kingsbridge National Ice Center Will Feature Nine Year-Round Indoor Ice Rinks, Including a 5,000-Seat Feature Rink for Major Ice Hockey and Skating Events

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/om/html/2013a/pr140-13.html

    Excerpts:
KNIC will feature nine year-round indoor regulation size ice rinks, including a feature rink that can seat approximately 5,000 people and be used to host national and international ice hockey tournaments, figure and speed skating competitions and ice shows.
.... "Today is a day for New York City to celebrate,” said Olympic Champion figure skater Sarah Hughes. “The Kingsbridge National Ice Center – and the educational and fitness initiatives it will create – represents new possibilities for so many children, including those who dream of one day becoming Olympic champions. This is the start of something incredible for the Bronx and I am proud to be part of it.” ....
At least two rinks at KNIC will be sled hockey-compatible for people with disabilities. The facility is expected to be open 365 days a year. ....
KNIC also plans to create a foundation to establish free after-school ice sports and academic tutoring programs for disadvantaged youth.
The project will now begin a comprehensive public and environmental review with an anticipated groundbreaking in late 2014. The entire project will be built in two phases, with the first phase, consisting of five ice rinks, 50,000 square feet community space, concessions and parking, expected to be complete by September 2018. The remainder of the project will be built in the second phase which is expected to open by September 2019.

Three skaters mentioned in this thread all are returning again this year to the benefit show An Evening with Champions (Oct 5 and 6 at Harvard).

Wylie and Emily Hughes once again are hosts. Meissner and she are among the performers.
(And in case anyone is wondering, the Protopopovs once again are scheduled to perform as well. Emily Samuelson also is in the cast [maybe for the first time?]. )

I believe Emily Hughes works for Deloitte Touche.

those hughes ladies are so impressive. Yes, blessed financially but you don't earn those degrees without hard work and intelligence. I wonder what happened to Christopher bowman's former girlfriend - Lyndon Johnston from Canada's former pairs parnters who won World Silver and then fell to ninth and obvliion - she got caught doing drugs with Bowman. I can't remember her name. Vern Taylor the guy who first landed the quad - I heard rumours he was dead of AIDS or was that Brian Pockar?? Elena vodorzeyva the first Russian female medallist? Anna Kondrosheva who was overshadowed by Kira ivanova (murdered). Tai Babliona and Randy Gardner who many thought had the 1930 Oly gold. Navka and kostomorov the OGM winners a few years ago.

Brian Pockar indeed died of AIDS. I haven't heard anything about Vern Taylor for years. Correction, though, if I may: Taylor landed the first triple axel in competition. Kurt Browning landed the first ratified quad. It's always been amazing to me that Kurt, who was first known for his jumps, has become one of the greatest artistic innovators ever as well. It's rare that a skater excels in both aspects of skating.

Last I heard of Vern Taylor was that he reinstated and competed in 1994 -- I think he was last or next-to-last at Canadians. But impressive that he got there, must've been in his mid/late 30s.

Can't find any documentation online, though.

    I think you mean 1980

Tai has a jewelry business and does speaking - she had a long battle with... alcoholism(?) that she's spoken about recently. Her son was skating for a while, not sure if he still does?

Randy is very active in skating as a choreographer and developer.

Both are active in the gay rights movement.

Oops you are so right about the triple axel where was my head. Those Canadians so obscure but so prevalent in history lol.

how nice for them. I think Jeffrey Buttle has done some positive things too for the gay movement though I was hoping he might finish his engineering degree like those impressive Hughes ladies.

    Awesome. I wish them well.

Just how does someone like Sarah Hughes make a living anyways? She doesn't seem to have a job is she independently wealthy? She doesn't seem to work but has plenty of free time.

Amazing - How old are Protopopovs? I saw them live over 30 years ago when I was a child.

Tai Babilonia is a jewelry designer, has her own line of chocolates (Tai Treats), does motivational speaking to help girls with eating disorders and those struggling with addiction, still skates (and with Randy!) from time to time, and has an 18 year old son, Scout, who wants to be a tennis player!

Randy is doing great with lots of choreographing and teaching (in Dorothy Hamill's fantasy camp for one!) and has his own skating app, the Rink with Randy Gardner.
