Is this an appropriate song to skate to in a competition?

The song is about masturbation, however it doesn't directly refer to it, only suggestively. Though it has a controversial topic, the song is not meant to be offensive. It addresses the topic pretty earnestly. Now I don't know how people in general would view this song, so I require your opinions.

The song is in Russian, and the lyrics have nothing obscene on them.
The only thing I deem inappropriate is the gasping sound the girl makes and that's as far as it can get.

I'd really hope to skate to this as it seems like a pretty strong and emotional song.

Just share your opinion, and please be polite about it. I'm an open-minded fella'. :)

I wouldn't be comfortable with the gasping in an audience where there are kids/families.

Youtube doesn't work on my current connection so I can't watch it to see, but my personal feeling is that if you have to ask if it's appropriate, then it probably is inappropriate.

I am almost scared to admit this, but I enjoyed that song!

But, then again, that is hardly surprising. Even though I was not keen on the lesbian act (especially the fact it was fake), I did like tATu! Julia and Lena’s voices really did go well together.

I have just watched 2 more YouTube videos of the song. One of them has English subtitles, and the other is a version which is actually sung in English.

Both use the original video, which is why I am not linking directly to them (suffice to say, I think it was the video rather than the lyrics that made this song so controversial).

But, to help you search for them if you do want to watch, the titles of the YouTube videos are:

"Prostye Dvizheniya t.A.T.u. English Subtitled"

and

"t.A.T.u. - A Simple Motion | Prostye Dvizheniya (unreleased english version)"

But, you have been warned!

I see what you mean from the English translation of the Russian lyrics. Although the lyrics are in riddles, you are not left in much doubt as to what the song is about.

The only thing I deem inappropriate is the gasping sound the girl makes and that's as far as it can get.

If you want a version without the breathing, there is an acapella version out there. But, since there’s no music either, it mightn’t be eligible for competition!

I'd really hope to skate to this as it seems like a pretty strong and emotional song.

Personally, I agree with you on this point. "Prostye Dvizheniya" does strike me as a song that could be intepreted into a very good skating programme.

I suppose whether it is appropriate to use it or not all depends on where you live. If you live in a country where a lot of people speak Russian, I wouldn’t take the chance. But, if you live in a country where there isn’t liable to be Russian speakers in the audience, then maybe. After all, they’ll be none the wiser!

As for the English version, the lyrics are even more graphic than the Russian original. So, I wouldn’t touch it!

At the end of the day, it’s up to you what you decide! ;)

There is vocal music.

If you're competing in an event where vocal music with lyrics is allowed, then it doesn't make any difference whether it's a cappella or has instrumental accompaniment.

Well, the thing is you have to interpret the music. So how do you convincingly interpret a song about masturbation on ice? Hmmmm. Yeah. Not something that should be done in public unless you're Miley Cyrus.

People ask the same questions in multiple places to get a broader response base; nothing wrong with that, is there?

I know but when i did it quite a while ago, people complained i already asked the same question before.
Anyways, i don't mind.

Yes, you need to interpret the music. BUT, that does not mean you have to interpret it exactly.

In 1994, Tonya Harding used the “Jurassic Park” music for her FS. Here is the video of her performance in US Nationals.

Now, I’m no expert, but I don’t see any interpretation of dinosaurs running around the rink. (Mind you, if there were invisible dinosaurs around, that might explain what happened in Lillehammer – one of the dinosaurs decided to eat her laces…!!!  )

Instead, Tonya was interpreting the sound of the music itself. And she did it pretty well, if you ask me.

Of course, as of this season, there is the complication of having lyrics. But, as I said in my previous post, unless there are people there that can understand Russian, this shouldn’t be an issue.

I don’t know if it is a requirement of the judges that the routine/music has to tell a story. But, if it is, here are a couple of stories that fit, and which, more importantly, sound convincing!

Story 1

Verse: You girlfriend is away on a trip somewhere without you, and you are miserable because you are missing her. You are imagining her sitting in a café, drinking a coffee, and she is also miserable as you are not there.
Chorus: You can’t stand it any more that your girlfriend is away, and it is driving you mad! You loose your temper, and then calm down.

Story 2

Verse: You and your girlfriend have just split up, and you are miserable because you are missing her. You are imagining her sitting in a café, drinking a coffee, and she is also miserable as she is regretting breaking up.
Chorus: You can’t stand it any more that your girlfriend has left you, and it is driving you mad! You loose your temper, and then calm down.

To get the story across, you don’t actually have to mention that you are a girl, or that when you are thinking about your girlfriend, you are doing something else at the same time…

Can I just add that I only gave Xstatic the advice I did because they said they were a fella. If they had been a girl, I would have advised her to stay well clear of this song!

If this was the case and somebody caught on, the media would have a field day! They would turn it into a whole big scandal, saying it is an example of the sexualisation of the sport. And, as proof of this, they would use the observation that the dresses are getting increasingly revealing (a thing I have expressed concern about in the past in relation to the Russian teenagers - see from this post onwards in the now-archived “COSTUMES ! COSTUMES ! Here we go....” thread).

And the skater in question would be asked all these awkward and personal questions. And they would be turned into a pariah by the governing bodies for being the seed that the media needed to invent this scandal...

Yeah, better just to stay clear if you're a girl! ;)

This question has already been asked by the same person on yahoo answers.

I totally agree, treesprite. Trying to get as many opinions as possible sounds like a pretty sensible thing to do, if you ask me. And it was a good idea to not only ask about it in a place that specialises in talking about the subject in question, but also in a place where people talk about anything. That way, they can get the opinion of “specialists”, as well as the general public.

Just because the same question is posted in multiple places does not automatically mean it is spam.

However, I see the question on Yahoo has now been deleted, so it looks like somebody in the general public has taken offence to the topic. Oh well, the asker will just have to make do with us!

I agree, it's always good to have a question discussed thoroughly when you need help, although i'm surprised this thread hasn't been locked yet.

Why would a thread about music choice be locked? It helps any future people wanting to use racy music understand why it's a bad idea.
