She beat a injured worn out aging Michelle Kwan. And then the next year Carolina finished 12th at Worlds and bombed at the Olympics. Maybe people should have given up on her too considering how weak the field was at Worlds in 2006.

consider how caro skated at that world, she should beat everyone after the SP. Yes, Caro was lowballed, too.
People saw her and said she was the most exciting skater out of europe since witt. That said something.

Compare caro at 15 and 16 and gracie now, the difference in musicality is huge

In one senior season she has shown potential and the tendency to fizzle quicker than you can say Elene Gedevanishvili.
Elene She is the skater who I am saddest never reached her 'potential' at a major event.

As fragile as Alissa seems, her team might be worried about her return coming to a screeching halt from a practice and training injury.

Yes, as of right now, she is overhyped. Perhaps compared to the other AMERICAN ladies (with the exception of Ashley Wagner) she is the cream of the crop, but if you go international, she REALLY doesn't have the total package the way some of the other ladies do. I get that she's supposedly a good jumper (too bad she's so inconsistent), but her artistry is still severely lacking. There's something about her demeanor and her arms and hands that telegraph "fake." It's not that she seems intentionally artificial...it's almost as though she can't help herself. The musical arrangements she's chosen don't really help, but I just get the feeling that she never really feels the music.

Like most people don't seem to get in IJS, "artistry" isn't quantifiable and isn't really judged. SS is about the ability to generate power and flow and speed easily and bi-directionally. TR is about how many different ways you cover the ice and in the direction. CH is about how you cover the ice and whether you hit "levels" in space (different than technical levels - but more about dimension) and whether you cover all the ice or only blue line to blue line. PE is more about the quality of what you put out versus "artistry" so a skater who has a clean, 7 triple with at least one 3+3 performance with level 4's in ladies is going to get a better score than someone who gets a couple under rotations and does no 3+3, and IN is more a follow on score than a "real" judge of artistry. Since Gracie covers the ice with a lot of power and has good (quantity and some variety) transitions and her program does touch those dimensional levels and all corners of the rink and when she's not rushing totally she's got the big tricks, her PCS is going to be a big number, even internationally (and she got 60+ at Worlds and WTT last year...) Of the younger guns (herself, Sotnikova, Tutkamysheva, Li...) she's right in the thick of things.

I don't see how we can say Gracie is overhyped when we have a thread going on right now about how awful her programs are.

Probably for the same reason people kept saying Osmond was over hyped, despite the huge majority of postings after SCI were criticism that Suzuki should have won. It does not matter whether the comments are positive or negative. What people seem to remember as hype, is how often your name is mentioned.
