Really? And thats why hes 3 time National Champ, right? :sarcasm:

He IS Hit or Miss at Nationals of late- last year, he was really off. But IcyEdges I agree with you about how extraordinary he is. One of the best artists ever and he can actually do all the hard jumps with ease IF he is in the right mental place. It is just so frustrating to watch such incredible talent fail to deliver on a consistent basis. But I adore him and would never criticize him.

As I recall, this year's Skate America's Men's panel were extremely generous. In fact, I recall making that comment during Men's FS. Dai's far below average performance - 6~7 errors in total where 5 jumps were either pop or had error while one spin was downgraded to Lv 2, was getting 159!? :sarcasm: Protocol here : http://www.isuresults.com/results/gpusa2013/gpusa2013_Men_FS_Scores.pdf

That's why it's dangerous to compare scores between two different competitions.

Except I don't think Machida's score was, he had Tech in the 90 and rightfully so. He also had an issue with his second quad and became a sequence so there's some more room tech there. He has excellent skating skills, I don't think the PCS were ridiculous either.

I agree with you about the quad lutz, but mainly because I don't think he really needs it. Machida is not a Patrick Chan or a Daisuke, or have that kind of rep. He's not going to get huge PCS if he messes up. His scores at Skate America I thought were realistic for what he put out.

If he continues to skate like that and win, he could be very dangerous.

He (Stephane, I mean) ditched the 3A completely in 2010, didn't he? (she said rather hesitantly having just proven what a rotten memory she has) However, it does seem that for a few skaters the quad is actually easier than the 3A. I wonder why that is?

I'm going to take a risk on what I think I remember learning on here and say that because some skaters are more comfortable with edge jumps than toe jumps, and others the other way around, some skaters might have an easier time with certain quads (the ones that are the different type of jump) than with the triple axel. I think Patrick has added to whatever his weakness is by leaving his technically sound former coach and essentially working without a jump specialist right now. As we saw with Michelle Kwan in late 2001-early 2002, this is not a great idea in an Olympic season. In 2001, I was a bundle of nerves for Michelle; I fear I will be anxious for the next few months about Chan (and for Takahashi, for different reasons). Will someone remind me what was supposed to be such fun about being a skating fan in an Olympic year?

Ahhhh Josh's Schindler's List is goooooooooorgeous! Even with mistakes it did funny things to my heart...
ITA! Beautiful program. I think we will see him in Sochi and in 4 years he will be a real contender. If he secures his quads, he has all the goods! Huge potential!

Oh I am so nervous for him. I truly think if he has a great performance in Sochi, he could turn the world back on to skating. He is so extraordinary. I saw his allure and appeal to non-skating fans today when the three "men" in my house fell in love with his skating.

Have any of you seen this video about his team/training process? Excellent. But now he does not have Krall. Does he have Shipstead anymore?

Really? 83.36 in PCS for such a basic program? When Kevin Reynolds won 4CC 2013 beating, Hanyu, Takahashi and Max Aaron with a flawless free skate that has more jumping content than Machida, his PCS was merely 80.00 Mind you, Reynolds is actually older than Chan and have been around for a while. His PCS wasn't given, he earned it through years of hard work and finally delivered it for his first ISU Championship gold medal. Machida's SA FS score is not remotely close to what he would have got in a proper ISU Championship, that much I know with certainty.

If he continues to skate like that and win, he could be very dangerous.

Doubtful. His skating is quite sloppy, which exemplifies Figure Jumping, not Figure Skating. He had one good competition when the field bombed around him. There is a good reason why he only managed 9th at the Japanese Nationals and missed out on the 4CC and World Team.

Are you more qualified than Kathy Johnson? How does dumb people look like? Personally, I can't tell. But I can tell 'crap talk'.

I, personally, would love to know what a "real" skating coach looks like lol. What, pray tell, is the difference between Kathy Johnson and Christy Krall??? Well, besides the "fact" that Kathy looks dumb? LMAO!
Sorry Spiky, this isn't directed at you, I just don't want to go back to the original (dumb) quotes.
Something tells me it's not Kathy that is looking dumb right now.

REALLY? Well, that would explain alot.
Athletes do tend to grow far later than the average teen, even into their early-20s, particularly during the off-season when their training regimen is not as strict....
Mao had her final growth spurt (albeit a small one) in the Vancouver Olympic season.
That's too bad for Yuzu that he is now contending with growth spurt. I guess it's gonna have to be the next Olympics for him. Hope he won't hurt himself trying too hard.

So what about judging here?
Chan's performance - 5~6 errors in total where 4 jumps were either pop or had error while one spin was downgraded to Lv 1, is getting almost 174!? :sarcasm:

I am not positive because I can't remember if Yuzuru was always taller than Patrick or not =S

Edit: I think they are more or less the same height based on this photo:

So yeah if Yuzuru did grow, it was in between 2012 and now. He's appears to be a bit (<2cm) taller than Patrick, so it's not a significant difference.

You might say that ;).
OT. Here is Patrick's Four Seasons from 2008. This is one of the best men's performances ever. Note the uncluttered choreography. We do not see programs like this any more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc2jXafZZws

I loved that program... it was the program that first made me notice Patrick. While there are a couple of callback moves in the new program it is a completely different beast. Have we've ever had a top skater take the same piece of music and have two different choreographers create two different programs before? Aside from showing the development of a skater, it is also an interesting study in the choreographer's style. In general I'm more partial to Lori's work with Patrick than David's, but we'll see how this current program matures.

On a completely superficial and light note. I really dislike Patrick's cleavage baring shirts. It seems to be getting lower and lower every year. Would it kill the costume designer to add an inch or two? Won't anyone think of the children!?! (clutches pearls) ;)

Wow! Just wow! I've just watched top three's LPs.

Congratulations to Patrick again! I have to give credit to Kathy Johnson on Patrick's detailed performance. He has paid so much attention on such details like head, hands, wrists, and shoulders. I like this program a lot better than his last year's LP.

I actually think Yuzuru looks better trained as far as his asthma concerned. He didn't gasp for the air that much, and his lips didn't turn blue after his LP like before. At this stage, Yuzuru seemed has only put a frame of this program out there. Much needs to work on. It's only the first GP. So no worry!

Like Yuzuru, Oda has a framed work put on ice. No hands and sometimes no arms have been called on to do the jobs. I don't really like this program.

Jeremy is one of the very few skaters in the world who has the rare ability to be absolutely spellbinding!! Oh how I wish he could be more consistent! He is so gifted! I wish him the best at Nationals. I do hope he makes the US Team for Sochi.
