How to resolve uneven Grand Prix distributions and late withdrawals for injured skaters

I know this happens every season, but how could these be resolved ? I find this unfair that some skaters get to have a tougher time in a GP than others, top 12 in Worlds gets guaranteed 2 spots in the GP yet some are still stacked in 1 same GP event. let's not forget it also depends on the host country invitations, should the host country be punished for selecting weaker skaters to held up their home skaters ?

lets take a look at CoC, had these ladies competed in SC or SA none of them would have medaled or
the Pairs event in NHK is less stacked than say in TEB or CoR

another issue is the late withdrawals, were the spots are left unfilled
there should be like a penalty for not announcing 2 weeks before a GP event

Zijun withdraw but she was coming off from an injury
but there are others who announced it too late like Kevin Reynolds, Denis Ten, Chafik Besseghier

Skaters can get injured close to an event. That is really out of their control. Making them skate injured is not an option, either. I don't think any significant change can be made in regard to withdrawals.

I think the change needs to be that scores are a factor in determining the GP finalists. Not the only criteria, but a bigger factor than they currently are.

you can't predict what some skaters will or wont do on any given day of competition. the ISU does its best to "spread the wealth" but it's still up to the top skaters to actually skate and skate well.

I won't comment on late withdrawals because there is nothing that can be done. But regarding uneven distribution - I know it is unfair that some skaters face tougher competitions in some events than other skaters in a different event. However, often this can't be foreseen in advance. for example, the Cup of china ladies was quite strong event on the paper. no one could have known that none of the skaters will deliver. There were 4 skaters that placed in the first 10 at worlds in March 2013 at this event. Kexin Zhang had a very decent results at worlds a year ago. Zijun Li had very good result at worlds in March. Kostner and Murakami - 2nd and 4th at worlds 2013. Sotnikova not so great at worlds, but got silver (and was not that far of gold) at Europeans in January 2013. Agnes Zawadzki is usually also pretty decent skater.

I don't always mind the withdrawals because it lets up-and-coming skaters like Julia to have a chance to win senior events.

it wasn't just the ladies
it happens in men, dance, pairs some GP events have lesser competition than others

I thought the same about skate Canada pairs. The federation wanted to do their best for Duhamel/Radford. I don't think anyone could forsee that they would be beaten by Berton/Hotarek or Sui/Han.

Radford had an old shoulder injury which recurred during the competition. It cost them the gold.

Thinking about it made me realise... how many great pairs are there really? How can you "spread the wealth" - when there isn't all that much wealth to spread?

True.

There are rules in place to spread the wealth (and drawing power) and to avoid elimination of top skaters from the GPF. Only one of the top three and one of the 4-6 ranked skaters are allowed at each event in each discipline. Well , both Japan and France somehow managed to go around this rule one year.

Some competitions are particularly competitive, some aren't. At the Grand Prix Final, the top 5 men all cleared 258 points. And then Fernandez won bronze at Worlds with 249 points.

Some skaters have good and bad competitions too -- at the GPF Takahashi scored 269 points to win it, and at Worlds he scored 239 points to place 6th.

Since the beginning, there have always been uneven distributions and some events are scored lower by the judges, or the tech specialist is tougher, or the skaters simply don't perform to their calibre.

I begin to be angry of all of theses late call withdraws

Why the French federation didn't replace Gilleron-Gorry by Candice Didier ?
I fell bad for the skaters who wait for a replacement and didn't get it, cause of late withdraw.

Why Candice Didier didn't replace Gilleron-Gorry, changing french skater by french skater should not be hard to do even if it is in last minute :rolleye:

I don't know the solution for late withdraws but it is so frustrating. It was less noticeable when there were 12.

More entries and more substitutes, but not happening cuz this obviously also means more budget
