You have to hand it to this pair for sheer determination. I'll always admire them, especially Kawaguti, for their grit and perseverance.

Absolutely!

Of course I love them anyway - one of my favourite pairs. :)

I doubt they'd be ready by the time of the Olympics in any case - it sounds to me as if their preparation is too behind for that. What do you people think about Worlds? I mean - will they be ready? and if they are - will they be sent?

(I realise that Worlds' is a come-down when one is hoping for an Olympic spot - but I'd love to see them compete anyway... )

Yes, I wouldnt be totally surprised to see them replace the 3rd placing Russian team at Worlds.

I am hopeful but doubtful we will see them at world's. But S and K and B and L are not really what I envision as teams ready to represent Russia as no. 1 if V and T retire. Usually Russia has stronger pairs teams but they do seem capable of holding off the Americans and competing with Italy, France and Canada and other than Pang and Tong China.

from their Facebook:

Yuko Kavaguti & Alexander Smirnov

December 29

Alexander Gorshkov of the Russian federation said of Smirnov: “Courage and sacrifice are always rewarded”. The final names for the Olympic team will be announced on January 27th. A test skate for Kavaguti and Smirnov will take place after Europeans and the final two pairs will be selected. Personally, I hope he is ready for Sochi but if not they can look forward to being ready by Worlds in three months.

:agree:

I have a soft spot for them; hoping and praying for a miracle I kind of feel they deserve an oly medal though it is unlikely now:(

Interview of Tamara Moskvina - coach of Kawaguti/Smirnov.
http://www.team-russia2014.ru/article/figur/14094.html (Russian)
Very shortly:
1. Pair skate programs with some elements.
2. Smirnov few days ago landed 1A (3 times) - first jumps after injury.
3. They plan to skate full program at January 25.

Info about the same.

It is very hard for me to see them being competitive if he just started jumping yesterday. But I wish them luck!

Hi folks: I may have missed something, but did I see something stating that there would be a test skate for K/S on January 27? Or is that no longer taking place? Sorry, can't find the link, but that was a date I recall seeing as being the ultimate deciding factor.

In any event, I saw that the entries for the Olympics have been posted on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figure_skating_at_the_2014_Winter_Olympics_–_Pair_skating - they list V/T, B/L, S/K as the three Russian teams.

Nothing's been posted on their Facebook page since January 5, just after Sasha tried out his jumps.

As far as I know Russia has NOT named their team yet officially. Many are 'sure' of the team (myself included) but to my knowledge, it is NOT official.

That said, I don't think K/S have any prayer of Olys at this point. The most they can hope for is Worlds, and that only (probably) if S/K or BL finishes outside top 10 at Olys which may or may not happen.

I think that 25th January is the date I've seen for the Russian team announcement? (I may be mistaken, though, and if so... corrections welcome! :) )

Kavaguti / Smirnov plan to compete in Russian Cup final in February

as already mentioned before he is now doing double jumps
can do normal thorws and lifts, even do tehir quad throw practices
lets hope they don't throw a quad and reinjure themselves at the event, they want to get ready for Worlds in Japan
hopefully get that 3rd spot over Bazarova / Larionov ?

"Speaking to the point, Sasha slowly recovering. Already jumping double jumps , a double axel . During training guys do a quadruple release , other elements. Hopefully if all goes well , the Russian Cup final show good ride . Upcoming Russian Cup Final will be for us not just start after a long break , and selection for the World Cup in Japan, where Yuko and Sasha really want to speak "- quoted Moskvin official website of Federation of figure skating in Russia .

Russian Cup final will be held in 2014 in Novgorod from February 26 to March 2.

some very nice practice photos http://gallery.ru/watch?a=1T-lrj8#feature=subsregs
the cake is heartbreaking

A quick update on Yuko & Sasha from their Facebook page. If Google Translate is correct, they will miss the worlds as we, and the entire season was a wash. We all kind of knew, but this appears to be confirmation:

Here's a recent exhibition in Moscow they performed the day after Sochi ended:

I'm sad it never happened for these two at the Olympics. They would likely have been the second pair on the team instead of S/K and gotten a medal. But I'll always root for them!
