Russian isn't exact Uganda, but it's still a pretty bad place for LGBTQ persons. And it's not just this recent law passed or the prohibition against same-sex marriage. The extralegal discrimination and violence against LGBTQ people is really the worst. Employment opportunities are very small if you are openly gay and violence against LGBTQ people is tolerated. For example, in the last few months, there has been a slew of videos posted on Russian social media of young gay men being captured and humiliated or tortured. People have reported that several have been murdered, but the police aren't really interested in investigating. Other, less organized violence, is reported to be prevalent by activists in Russia, but quality statistics on this stuff is hard to come by because, surprise surprise, the Russian government isn't exactly willing to collect and release this kind of data. The so-called "anti-propaganda" law has only emboldened discrimination and violence against the LGBTQ population and its wording is so-vague it can be used as a catch-all against anyone trying to advocate for tolerance of LGBTQ people.

Also, though irrelevant to my point, I couldn't find any google results saying Johnny Weir lived in Russia. Only that his husband, who he married in New York, was Russian-born.

Good explanation.

One openly discriminates against a minority and has laws in place that persecute them and their supporters. And the other, oh wait...

you're comparing the law to Nasizm

anyways, its best Wagner accepts she lost to Mirai and Polina at go to Worlds instead, Wagner will be mocked if she even competes in Sochi
the Russian media be criticizing her making statements yet finishing only 4th in her Nationals, not to mention her reputation has been completely tarnished

No. It is all hyped on purpose to draw attentions.

You missed the sarcasm emoticon in there somewhere. Caelum's post regarding violence summarizes why the situation of gays really is terrible. It also should be added that kids who have been raised by loving parents (who happen yo be LGBT) are also being taken away from them.

How can the situation be considered "not that terrible" when it is against the law for an LGBT person to even claim they aren't abnormal?

they should go to Uganda, Iran or the Gulf Middle Eastern States and then they will happily come back to Mother Russia :disapp:

Yes, that's the solution. Send them to places that are even more oppressive and discriminatory so that they appreciate Russia's oppression and discrimination. :sarcasm: "We won't kill you... We'll just throw you in jail, turn a blind eye when violence is inflicted upon you, remove your children, and treat you as second class citizens.... that's all. Could be worse!" :rolleye:

I don't see how these two things are related. Even the fifth or sixth place finisher is allowed to make statements about matters of public interest.

The same can be said for Mao placing 3rd. Do you honestly think Wagner or Mao cares about what the Russian media thinks of her?

The gay people (and Ashley Wagner too) do not see the instrumentalization for the anti-russian-government propaganda. It is a nasty game and the gay rights do not play any role at all.

They may have already realized that they are used as instrument for different purposes. However, I believe they are very glad to be used and use each other to reach their different goals.;) One thing is certain that the hype in the west is far from the reality in Russia.

What do you think the reality is for LGBT people in Russia? So all the news reports about violence, torture, etc. are all a hoax?

Mao placed 3rd, and Japan can send 3. Ashley placed 4th, and the USA can only send 3. Not the same thing.

I was referring to Mao and Ashley having other skaters ahead of them at Nationals and criticized for being "only the 3rd ranked Japanese or 4th ranked American").

Honestly if the Russian media criticizes Ashley or Mao, whatever... at least the US and Japan have 3 spots (thanks to Wagner and Asada).

Wagner May find that her "heroic act" of painting rainbow fingernails and wearing rainbow earrings will fall into a pool of rainbow color uniforms which the Russian Olympic volunteers wear.

6 entire days of rest on this thread since anyone posted anything here, and this is the best you came up with?
Let's all have an honest look at this ugly little monster hidden inside us that would motivate us to do something like that, and let's see it for what it is.
