Just curious what would happen if Plushenko (or any skater) didn't want to skate two programs? Such as, he wasn't feeling well? Would the entire team lose because of one skater?

The difference between skating and gymnastics teams is that there is always a backup gymnast available, but no backup singles skaters?

Russia qualified for only one men's slot in the individual discipline. Only that one man is allowed to compete in the team event.

The general rule for the team event is that only skaters who are eligible for the individual competitions for their disciplines are eligible to skate in the team competition.
(Exceptions are made for additional athletes for the team event only if a country qualified for ZERO slots in an individual discipline.)

If Plushenko skates only the team SP, then Team Russia will receive zero placement points for the Men's FS.

... in such a case, he'd still be asked to "show up" on the ice, so he'd be officially ranked. I guess going to the centre of the ice and bowing to the judges and audience is what's required to get 6 points for WDing rather than 0 for WDing before the event. (since even the worst of the 5 FS gets 6 points)

I have been concerned about Wagner skating the SP, considering her unstable and cheated 3-3 combo. But she should be able to finish at least 5th in that relatively weak field, even if she makes a mistake. The US won't deserve to make the team final if she skates so badly that skaters like McCorkell, Popova and Zhang beat her.
