FAB-O / FLUB-O Lessons & Practices 3/17 - 3/23

It's Monday, and another week of skating stretches before us. YAY!

Be sure to log in throughout the week and tell us about your good times (FAB-O) and not-so-good times (FLUB-O).

Details, details, because inquiring minds want to know!

Re: FAB-O / FLUB-O Lessons & Practices 3/17 - 3/23

I had my first lesson this morning after being off the ice for three weeks.

FAB: I was so excited, because my coach was totally impressed with the progress I've made on my Adult Gold moves--my brackets are really shaping up, my running threes have started to run, and my double-3s were controlled by speedy. She was especially glad to see my back scratch spin was more on than off, and my first attempts at scratch spins and sit spins were good. Yay!

FLUB: My lower back is aching a bit at the unexpected disclipline of doing so many of the moves for so long.

All in all, I'm on an adrenaline high, because I could even see my own progress. My future's so bright, I gotta wear shades!

Adult Gold Moves

The adult moves in the field track was just implemented this last September. They include Pre-Bronze, Bronze, Silver and Gold, and incorporate moves from the standard track. For example, the Adult Gold MIF's include the following:

Forward and backwards power circles from the standard Intermediate test
Forward double threes - I think from Juvenile?
Backwards double threes from Intermediate
Brackets, inside & out, forward & back from Intermediate
I don't remember what its called, but it's the power pushes into the inside three turn pattern from the Novice test.

Once you complete the adult track, you can move over to the standard track and start at Intermediate.

In case you are not familiar with MIF's at all, they are what replaced figures. You must pass the MIF test before you can take the associated freestyle test, ie CInderella must pass the Gold MIF before she can take the Gold freestyle test.

Hope that helps :D

Lessons

Hi everyone!

I haven't skated in three weeks because of a knee injury from skiing, but I should be back in the saddle, or on the blades tomorrow. I have a dance test coming up in April and I'm definitely nervous about being ready since I've had all this time off. Plus I'm going to Worlds next week, so there goes another week without practice! I also need to regain a certain level of fitness since I was unable to exercise at all. I guess I'll just have to wait until I skate tomorrow to see how I feel and take it from there.

Had a lesson with my coach this week and one with my husband's coach earlier in the week as mine was on vay-kay:

Flub-O: Getting a better body position on my back edges intially. I keep twisting my shoulders at times, especially with the right back inside edge. Finally "found my circle" with my upper body and got it better.

Fab-O: Hubby's coach told me I don't wind up well enough on my two foot spin (my suckiest element from my recent competition). More windup and presto--more speed and better revs--scared the dickens out of me at first, though!!! Little by little, its improving.

Worked on crossovers also with both lessons and finally got the "toe" out of the second push on all of them, forwards and backwards.

Not a bad week, and my respiratory infection finally seems to be subsiding, so I'll take it!!! ;)

YAZ - wow, good job on the lesson. Sounds like you've made some good progress and discovered some things about your body position.

One More Big Flub & Fab

FAB: I was all excited yesterday about my lesson because we finally started working on my Bronze Freestyle program. It's going to be great - my music is Fire on High by ELO and it's great not to just be doing moves.

FLUB: I was standing on the ice (not moving) and writing down a footwork sequence on my pad when I suddenly lost my balance for no reason and went SLAMMING down onto the ice. In addition to a pen-shaped bruise on my right hand, I totally and completely sprained my left wrist. It was unusable all night and today I have to type with one finger on that hand. Ouch! I don't know if it should count as a skating injury since I wasn't actually skating at the time. Stupid Stupid Stupid.

OUCH, Cinderella, take care of that wrist!!!

WHY do some of the worst falls seem to happen when we're doing nothing? Its like our brains take a moment off and WHAM, we're down. Grrrr....

Fab-O: I can finally do two-foot spins that actually look like spins instead of me trying to spin and looking like a moron! I still kind of stumble when I start going very fast, but hey, I take what I can get. ;) My 1/2 flips and waltzes are lookin' good and so are my catchfoot spirals. Wheee!

Flub-O: I have NO idea why, but at class my 3-turns were horrid. As time went on, they got better. First part of practice session (spent 2hrs on the ice) my back x-overs were being a pain and I don't know why. Probably just because I didn't get enough sleep, was tired. My spirals off-ice are about 3-4 inches from being vertical, but off ice they're not so good. Very irritating. I did a little Beillmann spiral ("Baby Beillmann" as my friend calls it) today and lost my balance and crashed on my face. Alas! Another massive bruise on my right knee.

Lanechka -- Ouch, that Baby Face Slam sounded painful! :x But glad to hear about the two foot spin success, and also the jumps.

Yaz -- I agree with you, those "non-moving" spills are the WORST! There's no sliding, no momentum, just CRASH, hello ice.

I think I crash a lot mainly because I'm klutzy. I mean, I run into doorframes and stuff and trip over stairs. ;)

I've never had non-moving spills. Watch, tomorrow when I go on the ice, it'll happen. ;)

Lanechka - NO NO NO, you will be the ultimate in grace and poise! I, too, tend to be klutzy. For me, it's a concentration problem (or should I say, lack of). My mom used to joke that I could land double jumps and perform flawless skating routines, but I would trip going up the stairs.

Good luck at your practice today. Be sure to pop back in and tell us how you're doing.
