There are some skaters who time after time appear in action photos and always look funny. The worst seem to be poor Elena Sokolova, Sasha Cohen and Angela Nikodinov. Laybacks always look very, very funny. I have seen a lot of in air pictures of Kwan and usually looks ok.

LOL, well, I really dislike that those kind of photos are published. Of course they look funny, but I really would prefer that fans of those skaters would rather get to see photos which they could enjoy of and maybe even save on their computers.

BTW, there is a rating under each of those photos. Maybe if many skating fans would choose "1", Yahoo might stop putting them up.

If anyone cares to comment about the photos, here are the email/contact addresses for Reuters, AP and AFP and the names of the photographers:

In 1997, when Michelle Kwan fell in her long program at Nationals, Sports Illustrated published FOUR pictures of her in the process of falling, splatted on the ice or getting up in their subsequent article. I remember that someone later wrote a letter to the editor complaining about the excess they exhibited in showing her errors. Unfortunately, sports reporting thrives on mistakes and the "agony of defeat" and they love to show it in pictures. I still remember when the late Roone Arledge was honered by, I think the TV Hall of Fame, it was the famous "agony" ski jumper who handed him his plaque, drily "thanking" Roone for keeping his sports memory "alive." That athlete, by the way is a multimillionaire and successful artist living in Europe. I always felt bad for him being the symbol of "defeat" for so long.

the abundance of photos of Evgeni splatting at Europeans reminded me of that Sports Illustrated coverage of Michelle. It's sad -- but Yazmeen's right, there is a lot of interest in the "Agony of defeat" - particularly when it involves the fall (no pun intended)of a champion.

The Phaneuf pic is actually not that bad, and the Sebestyen one is pretty nice. I've seen the Tot/Mar one before, and it is just WRONG!!

IIRC, there were usually a ton of really unflattering pictures of Sarah Hughes mid-jump after every competition. I don't know if she is just a victim of unfortunate centrifugal force, or if photographers went out of their way to publish the most disturbing pics of her or what, but half the time you couldn't even tell is was Sarah!

By the way, PML at "Tonya, stop hitting me!"

Poor Zhenya. :( They definitely have something against him at Yahoo. :\

Poundcake? That's quite rude don't you think? She gained a few pounds but remember she had injuries and surgery at the start of the season... I wish I was as "fat" as Elena was.

I don't know how to post picture links, but I find that Yahoo loves to pick on Jeff Buttle. He looks so strained when he's jumping and spinning, and the print a bad picture every time! And he's usually so darn cute.....
