If You Get This E-Mail, Delete It ASAP

"There's a new e-mail worm on the prowl. This one has a different twist: Not only does the worm, dubbed Netsky.b, spread by e-mail, but also by tunneling into shared folders on Windows systems. Since it uses a wide range of e-mail subject headings and message text, it may be tricky for you to instantly identify it if it lands in your e-mail box, reports Internet Week.
--Possible subject lines include: "read it immediately," "something for you," "hello," "warning," "I have your password!," "about me," "anything ok?" or "do you?"
--The file attachment has a double extension, possibly ending in doc.pft. It often appears to be a Microsoft Word document with the first part of the file extension ending in .doc, but it can also end in .txt, .rtf, or .htm.

"Netsky.b is like a cluster bomb," Ken Dunham, a security analyst with iDefense, told InternetWeek. "It spreads to various networks via e-mail and then erupts on the network through shared files. Networks infected with this worm will likely experience a dramatic outbreak, while others may not see much of it at all." Once Netsky.b is in a PC, it hijacks the e-mail addresses and sends itself to all of them, which is why it will look like it comes from someone you know if you get it. The worm will also copy itself into the Windows directories that have "share" or "sharing" in their names, spreading to other computers that have rights to files in those directories.

Don't look now, but your home PC could be a spam zombie--and you wouldn't have a clue. Find out how spammers may be exploiting YOUR computer.

The anti-virus company Symantec considers Netsky.b a real threat and has given it a warning level of 4 out of 5. The last worm to get such a high rating was the original MyDoom in late January. Netsky.b is fast-spreading and is affecting businesses and home users. The good news: Rather than being a malicious virus that destroys your files or makes your computer vulnerable to attacks, Netsky.b is more of an annoyance. Experts think the worm may attempt to clean up the MyDoom backdoor by deleting the registry keys that load it at the system start-up.
