now we've senn all 6 torchbearer with apparent 4 summer Olympians
but one resume is a bit lacking

1 Alexander Karelin - greatest Greco Roman wrestler of all time
2 Maria Sharapova - most successful Russian tennis star
3 Elena Isinbayeva - greatest female pole vaulter
4 Irina Rodina - not counting her racist retweet, a legend in pairs and 3 OGM
5 Vladislav Tretiak = legendary Russian Ice Hockey player

6 Alina Kabaeva - 1 OGM ?

I got confused at first because of similar names but it is Kanaeva who is actually the mot successful rhythmic gymnast Not Kabaeva
and she wasn't on the torch bearer

the results speak for itself:

Kanaeva's gold medals alone is only comparable to Phelps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yevgeniya_Kanayeva
Kabaeva not so much : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alina_Kabaeva

Kabaeva was even defeated in 2000 Olympics by another russian gymnast: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yulia_Barsukova

I don't follow gymnastics, but if what you say is right, it does seem very strange!

But, in the BBC commentary, Hazel Irvine did point out that there were, how shall I put it, "other reasons" Kabaeva may have been selected... ;) ;) *nudge* *nudge*

Anyway, onto my assessment of the torchbearers.

Was it just me, or did anybody else think it was a disgrace that of the 6 torchbearers, only the last 2 were from wintersports?!

Like, what has tennis, pole vaulting, wrestling and gymnastics got to do with the Winter Olympics?!

I know these are very famous names in Russian sports, but this is a WINTERSPORTS event. So, should it not have been famous names in Russian WINTERSPORTS doing the torchbearing at the Opening Ceremony?!

Sorry if it sounds like I am being unfair to these 4 sportstars, but I just don't think that was right that the majority of the torchbearers at the WINTER Olympics Opening Ceremony were from SUMMER sports.

Rant over.

ikr, Slutskaya, The Propotovs, Grishuk / Platov, and many other would have been better
sick of summer olympians going into winter olympic scenes :disapp:

I would have been fine with Grishuk/Platov, but I wanted to see Ekaterina Gordeeva be at least one. She was part of arguably the best pairs team of all-time, and her resume is very strong as well. G&G's influence lives on, with many pairs teams admiring them, even today.
