Not sure why they are so disappointed. They had no Pairs or Ice Dancing team that could contend with the other teams. Even Italy was stronger across the board with the exception with the Men's.

Their ice dance and pairs teams are extremely weak, so they should be happy that they made it to the finals. By the next Olympics they can work on developing skaters in all the disciplines, and I am sure they will be motivated to.

It's still too bad that there was no way Mervyn Tran could gain Japanese citizenship.

Gallagher 's journal , over dramatized as usual. Japan have no solid shot for medal in the first place.

when in doubt, blame the reeds

This is mean. The Reeds tried really hard. So did Takahashi/Kihara, but they were just not up to par with the rest of the field. Tbh, I didn't expect Japan to place higher than 4th; they had a slim chance of bronze and that was contingent on the Singles winning their segment.

I don't see any reason for disappointment. Japan is strong to the point of unbelievability in the singles discipline but weak in pairs and ice dance. They made it into the finals, and Hanyu especially did an outstanding job. That's pretty good for the first Olympic team championship ever. In order to place higher, the national federation needs to nurture the other disciplines, but I see no reason that they shouldn't just remain singles specialists. Look how many of us non-Japanese skate fans count Japanese skaters among our current and past favorites.

:slink: I thought the Japanese dancers and pairs did very well in the SP. The pair's beat 2 other pairs, and nicely for a first year pair. Japan might not have made it to the final if not for the contribution of its pair and dance teams who skated their best, which is what one hopes for in a teammate.

I agree. Japan made it into the finals which was an accomplishment imo. I dislike the blame game that some journalist play.

ITA. What's next? Hanyu to have flu? Or Asada to lose 3Lp? :sarcasm: My honest feeling is do we really need every new thread for every single article from Japan Times to be post here??? then we may need like a hundred threads by the end of the Games for this Mr Journalist sake... Personally, would appreciate it if all these threads can be combined to something like 'Japan Times articles on Sochi Games'. :slink:

That's a good idea, Deedee!

(I've already started losing sleep about Dai. How about you? Oh, I hope his knee holds up!)

Olympia, sleepless nights for me, too... Good news to know is Dr Hara must have arrived Sochi by now to support Dai during Mens comp. The doctor is the surgeon who repaired his torn ligament in the right knee back in 2008, and also helped Dai upon his re-injury to be healed enough to be able to compete at the Nats. My sincere wish, at this point, is the doc will help him to reduce some pain in the knee, so that Dai can skate pain-free as less as possible. for once.
