Mao was the only skater to do 8 triples, with both triple toe loop and loop as a second jump in a combination. And the only skater to do a triple-axel.

Technically, she left all of the other skaters in the dust and was on a totally different level.

She should have won the LP, of course. She did. She was wonderful.

Can someone who is a technical expert go through a comparison of just the LP between Mao and Sotnikova?
I don’t understand how a program with 8 triples including a jump nobody else can do can score lower? And why is there such a difference in PCS if most people
agree that Sotnikova’s moves are unpolished and skating skills are coarse, compared to Mao, Carolina and Yuna?

Something feels wrong when a program like Mao’s today gets many points lower than Sotnikova’s. I know it didn’t matter for medals, but still - could anyone break it down for me?

Mao   , many women had gold medal but much less women had triple axel, let alone a 8 triple program in OG. You are the best

If Mao's SP+loss of an olympic medal was the price for this amazing FS, I think it worth it. What she did tonight is far more meaningful than a bronze or silver medal.

The biggest issues that dropped Mao's score today were her underrotation calls. The 3A had a scratchy landing and was also close in rotation, so that resulted in conservative GOE (she's gotten 10 points for a 3A before, today she got 8.9 or so). The backend jumps on 3F-3Lo and 2A-3T were called 3Lo< (which was utterly unjustifiable) and 3T< (it was not the best 3T she's ever done but I don't remember the replay as well on that), she got an edge call on the 3Lz (-GOE of course) that Adelina did not receive, and she was outright robbed in PCS. (Robbed is a relative term but she certainly was in relation to the entire final flight).

All in all, Mao Asada was definitely robbed of 5th place. 4th place maybe less so but there's still a strong case to be made for her placing above Gracie in the end too.

congrats to Mao for having the FS of her career,

I would have had her 2nd or 1st in the FS
and 4th or 5th overall
sadly, her SP was her downfall

Mao made the world proud today. Her performance showed us what it's like to be a true champion. That performance and those tears at the end made me cry. Also she should have scored higher, but it doesn't matter. That was the best olympic moment in Sochi for me and it will stay that way no matter what the scores are.

Mao was magificent tonight. What a fighter, what a comeback, what a performance.

Her best ever free skate... light... graceful... beautiful... and tonight, full of emotion. But also technically packed... fast and strong skating... 3A, 8 triples, level 4 spins, her always-awesome level 4 steps... and to make it all PERFECT - she wore that fabulous Skate America costume.

I cried with her at the end. This will surely be added to my list of all-time favourite, most memorable skates. It was a priviledge to witness it.

When a skater competes against the home favorite, she must skate "better" in everyone's eyes. Clearly it's impossible with the inferior jump content and spins. I'm happy with the victory of "7 triples" and Mao's best skate ever.

(I intended to post this in the Ladies FS thread, sorry for a mistake)

Mao was the shining star of the night for me. Her performance was technically amazing, perfectly executed, and so, so emotional. I will miss seeing her on competitive ice. I wish we had ice shows in the US where we could see her skate in the future. Sigh.

Mao Asada was simply the best of the ladies tonight!
I have tremendous respect and love for the brave lady who refused to crumble, but to rise above all the tragedy the night before. :agree:
If a medal could have been granted only based on LP performance, she'd have been the only one worthy of OGM. Thank you Mao for not giving up and showing us your beautiful soul till the end.
Here's my secret wish that you can continue to Pyeongchang and get your much deserved OGM there!

Mao Asada Really Stole the Show Tonight

Epic Comeback.

Am I delusional for thinking she might've deserved the Bronze?

But with the corrupt judging even if she skated a perfect SP, she wouldn't have won the gold.

Mao had the best PCS.

She might've. On the other hand that would mean Carolina wouldn't get bronze. And she totally deserved this medal! Mao destroyed her chances in the short, it is what it is.

Who cares about the scores when she puts out a performance like this? It was simply unbelievable and amazing. She got a medal in Vancouver but this one was better.

I know that it may sound bizarre to compare a delicate ethereal butterfly to a boxer, but Mao reminds me of Jake La Motta against Sugar Ray Robinson in Raging Bull. She couldn't win it but she fought like a champion. Life, skating, nerves didn't spare their blows but they never got her down.
She's just great and it sucks that she was so lowballed just because she skated early.

I don't think she should've pipped Carolina for the bronze. I think she should've been 4th. BUT if we wanted to revert to Japanese judging, Asada would of course get the bronze. Adelina SP 74 => 66, FS 149.95 => 135, Mao SP gets majorly propped up 55 => 58, FS 142.71 => 150. Not that I would agree with this result though.
