How can more medals be brought to the sport of figure skating?

Today we witnessed Adelina Sotnikova get awarded the gold medal for Ladies' Figure Skating. That and the newly-created Team Event bring to mind the question: how does one create more medals? Russia is currently sitting in 2nd place for the total medals count and in 4th for the golds, but had figure skating provided more medal opportunities, they could be in first.

Would more medals be good for the sport? We could rename the current medals the "all-around" medals, turn the "small medals" into real medals, and reintroduce a figures event. In this case, Adelina Sotnikova could have won the Short gold (she was in 3rd, but was very close to 1st), the Long gold, the All-around gold, and the Compulsory Figures gold. And Russia would be in 1st place with 10 gold medals.

Thoughts?

More medals for Russia to buy. Goodie. Their sucky economy could get even worse and even more people could be living on the street just so they can purchase more figure skating medals their skaters are no longer good enough to win on the ice.

They could also have skill competitions in hockey, give medals to the winner of each group, the tournament MVP, the best goalie... and in short track they could give medals to the leaders after each lap. That way in the 1500m you could win 14 gold medals.

There's only so many medals you can milk out of figure skating before it starts becoming ridiculous. Beside, its not like Russia has a lack of sports it traditionally does well in (cross country, biathlon, speed skating), its just that it under-performed in those.

Russia should have had Adelina skate in the men's competition instead of Plushenko, maybe they would've won another medal there :slink:.

Well for what purpose is a school figures medal except to be bought? I included it for a reason.

Bring in Synchro!!!! It's the ISU's neglected child. It's such an entertaining party sport.

Other than that, there is nothing really else- Skating fours? Or Adagio Skating? Or Solo Dance? Who knows!

Most likely the gold. If you give +3 for every element (including the jump she stepped out in the long) and a perfect 10 for every program component wouldnt that just crack a 280 for her? I could be wrong, havent done the math, but if not they would just require a special +4 and up to 11 in PCS button that can only be pressed for a Russian skater to get the mens gold. They would then justify it by Chan and Hanyu making mistakes (though their scores would have been held down to around that level even had they done clean longs to go with their clean shorts so Sotnikova could still win the mens gold).

I dont believe Russian even has a synchro team. Nonetheless they would find some bums from the street, dress them up in tu tus and "solve" the way for the judges to "give" them the gold before the event began. :)

Well in the predictions thread I said that the technical panel would call all her triples as quads and award her 0th place, ascending her to skating heaven. That's another way.

Thanks. I last followed it in the 90s and they didnt seem to have someone good then but I guess they do now. Good for them, less millions to keep from taking away from their struggling economy and high poverty rate, just to buy yet more figure skating medals they dont deserve, as they might actually deserve that one if synchro ever is added.
