I think a lyrical skater could create a beautiful program to "Arrival of the Birds and Transformation" by The Cinematic Orchestra.

Well, first of all, I want to thank everybody for their suggestions: I've been discovering lots of interesting music on this thread.

@skatedreamer I didn't know Sinfonietta was performed by a ballet company, I checked it on youtube and – wow!

Let's throw in a whole new bunch of stuff:

I'm happy about the consensus Baroque music elicits on this thread. Apart from Denkova/Stavinski, I don't recall it being used much in skating.

I've found on youtube this rendition of Monteverdi's Orfeo with choreography by Trisha Brown : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb2TURdBeEQ

Then there's this production of Rameau's Les Paladins, in which dancers accompany singers (acting as sort of body doubles) with modern dance/break-dancing moves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frpd5f0VUvo

I got the idea that such blend of operatic music and modern dance is way more accepted (even if far from unanimous) with Baroque operas than with Bel canto ones, but the problem is not the repertoire, rather the approach, and IMHO skating coreographers take their Tosca-Traviata-Turandots straight from the dusty closet of a provincial theatre.

Händel's Rinaldo contains such beautiful arias such as Sibilar gli angui d'Aletto, Lascia ch'io pianga, Vo' far guerra e vincer voglio.

Back to instrumental pieces, I like cello very much, what about György Ligeti's Sonata for solo cello? Maybe it can be suitable for a SP

bartlebooth! thanks for the Orfeo link! :) love the choreography in that video.

if we're still on baroque music, i would like a medley of songs from Purcell's "the fairy queen" :)

The "Lord of the Rings" soundtrack

I was just about to say this. :D I wasn't watching figure skating yet when Todd skated to it, but I'm hoping one of the current skaters returns to the soundtrack and does it justice. Whether it is Reynolds to a Shire theme because he does have that youthful look to him, or, say, Marchei or Murakami to one of the Enya/Fleming songs, I don't care. But someone please do it. *_*

And a load of my favorites that I'm not seeing anywhere - Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, Flashdance soundtrack (which at least was in Fernandez' exhibition), All the Right Moves in ice dance, Vltava (preferably skated to by a Czech competitor), Lady Gaga could be hilarious, Adiemus, Enigma... so many tunes I'd love to see on ice. :)

This would be AMAZING, but it would take a very artistic skater to be able to pull off the mood of the song. It's so slow, moody and sensual. Would this be considered tango music?

This would be a GREAT exhibition number for Yuna or Mao, don't you agree? Maybe Caro too. It would take incredible sophistication and musicality to pull it off. It could also be trimmed down and made into a SP.

As a pair, I can see it working for V/T for next season. Can someone Tweet this at them? :)

I think Yuna can mayyyybe pull it off (though I don't feel that her aesthetic falls in the "sensual" range). I'm not really sure about Mao bc I feel like she "forces" emotions a lot in her program. There was a point in her Sochi LP where she suddenly had a really dramatic, exaggerated smile on her face and I was like  because it looked so comical.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Asian-themed music and would love to see more skaters use that in their programs (as long as it isn't Memoirs of a Geisha or Butterfly Lovers). The following songs would be incredible to skate to.

House of Flying Daggers, Lovers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jr52dyCUqE
Hero, For the World - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCkbfapn-I4
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n16h16jtGw

Whole post

I can't wait to investigate everything you've suggested here!

It makes one realize how narrow a view many skating folk (coaches, choreographers, the skaters themselves) have of music, especially of classical music--which, after all, is a 500-year-old treasure chest of possibilities. I expect more from the coaches and choreographers than from the skaters themselves, who are very young and likely haven't had a chance to be exposed to the vast repertoire of any musical style, even popular music. (There are exceptions, of course, especially skaters who also study music.) But the adults in the picture should really explore a bit more. I think Sandra Bezic and Lori Nichol used to find a lot of innovative stuff, though Lori has eased up in recent years, and Marina Zoueva seems to find great off-the-beaten-track pieces as well. I always hope for more in the future.

Good suggestions! And Peng / Zhang did CTHD this year for their short. I agree that Hero and Flying Daggers would make wonderful scores as well.

I do agree that Yuna and Mao have more limited range in their programs, and they need to strike the *right* mode for Yuna to pull it off.

The more I think about it, the better it would suit a pair. If Max and Tania did it, and given the film is so sensual, their connection on- and off the ice would melt the rink.

Agreed, no more Geisha or Butterfly Lovers, they're overused now.

It's the same theory as in painting, phototography, etc. Your music is your background. There is a whole theory about background in photography. The background should support the main theme, which is the skater. Not distract, not overwhelm, not dominate. In photography the best background is blurred, you know what it is but you don't see the distracting details, it adds mood and brings attention to the main subject. It has color, it has texture, it embeds the main subject. It is the ocean to fish, the sky to a beautiful face, the forest to a grand wolf. It defines the environment and brings context. It only serves the subject, but it is not the subject itself.

The Piano Guys are a great choice! Does anyone know their cover of Adele's Rolling in the deep? Perfect for skating! They also have a nice rendition of The Lord of the Rings Soundtrack in a 5 minutes piece....Actually The Piano Guys went and did a live concert on Times Square Rink last winter and put a video on their YouTube channel:) So they obviuosly noticed that skaters began to love their music......

Yes, It was great! desertskates, thanks for posting the link (I admit I have been a more than a bit lazy about posting links, especially since our computer crashes each time I try to watch a Youtube video lately  ) vLadiMiRa, see my post #54 for some other skaters re: The Circle of Life.

I'd like to see Yulia skate to something from Marie Antoinette :) (She even looks a bit like Kirsten Dunst!)
Some candidates:
"Avril 14th" - by Aphex Twin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-KLlE4kKHA)
"Concerto in G" - by Vivaldi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzmU_9U-3Go)
"Opus 36" - by Dustin O'Halloran (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yzxo0YCxAA0)
"Ceremony" - by New Order (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pjz_S_d2lk)

For Radionova, or maybe Gracie (lots of good ones by this artist, too):
"Dream Fortress" - by Grimes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQUGsrPli1U)

I'd give either of these to Jeremy Abbot. I think his choreography, energy, and expressiveness are a perfect fit.
"Crooked Legs" - by The Acorn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQj3l_GLN90) *eta - fixed link
"The Flood: Part One" - by The Acorn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9U5qutkUIw)

@I♥Yuna: Péchalat/Bourzat skated to Organ Donor for their wonderful Madness FD in 2007/08.

What about The Pillow Book soundtrack? It contains songs by Guesch Patti: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRvLUoaJ0hQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJmAr8YHSvg - haunting
and a Valse by Belgian composer Walter Hus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHaXDQI4Deo
as well as the 1940 Chinese pop song Méigui méigui wǒ ài nǐ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PrvRhaoNN8

Antother suitable movie soundtrack is Rob Roy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pb_9svkhOEE&list=PL9467A580E984F14B#aid=P3ybEIqmewA – I like the movie better than Braveheart.
