    Madison Chock & Evan Bates

    http://www.freep.com/article/2014021...ng-chock-bates

Jeff Seidel wrote a lovely article about Maddie and Evan for the Detroit Free Press, during the pre-Sochi hype season. It describes how they got together, and is a great introduction to the two of them.

I hope I am not their only fan!

This story starts with an interview with Igor, Maddy, and Evan. They couldn't be happier with their Olympic experience. Evan says Maddy was just a rock for him

Chock and Bates became one of my favourites after I saw them at Finlandia Trophy at the beginning of this season (They took the silver medal, behind Virtue and Moir)

After Davis and White, they are the American team that I like the most - I find their skating more enjoyable to watch, and somehow more... I don't know, "sophisticated"? Plus, Evan has something of Charlie White's "goofy charm" (I mean that to be a compliment! lol)... Madison is just SO glamorous... and I love their choice of costumes (this year at least).

If Davis and White retire, it will be interesting times for the US Ice Dance teams - and I hope Chock and Bates are among those stepping up to the challenge of filling that void.

Here's a few photos I took at Finlandia:
    A beautiful couple...
    That FS lift...!
    Drama!

    What wonderful photos!!

And how glad I am that Evan did not wear those pants at the Olympics!

They were just wonderful at U.S. Nationals in Boston.

For better or worse, Maddy designs their costumes.

I really enjoy them. I think that if they push themselves, they'll be especially exciting to watch over the next quad. They seem like a good pairing.

Haha, yes they are a bit "Super Mario"... :-D
If they at least matched his cravate, they wouldn't be so bad...

Skaters often wear stuff at Finlandia, that we don't see for the rest of the season. Or last season's costumes. Maybe they don't have their "real" costumes finished/ready so early in the season?

I think that is often the case. Heck, I know one top team where the guy did not receive his costume before his first GP of the year and had to improvise one on the spot.

And Maddy & Evan are looking to the future after finishing fifth at Worlds:

    http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2014/03/29/70411480

U.S. silver medalists Madison Chock and Evan Bates, who train under Shpilband, skated a fast, clean program to music from Les Misérables, gaining five Level 4 and three Level 3 elements. Their opening lift combination was outstanding.
"We were so excited for this performance; everything we have done this season led up to the Olympics and the world championships," Chock said. "We couldn't be happier to be in Tokyo and to put out two great skates to finish it off."
"We consider ourselves a team that is pushing upward, and we wanted to contend here," Bates said. "For this week, we skated well, and it's something to build on for next season and for the future.
"Now that we've experienced the world stage and the Olympic stage together, we can have confidence in ourselves," he continued. "The importance of this event wasn't lost on us."
Evan has graduated from college, so they should be concentrate even more on training.

Bates and Chock teamed up in July 2011, after Greg Zuerlein retired from skating, so that Maddy was without a partnet. As we see in 2014, it is more typical for teams to break up and reform in April, so Maddy & Evan got a late start in their first season.

Fans who don't know the skating of C&Z may be interested in their career.

I always liked Chock & Zuerlein, too. They teamed up in 2005.
    Some random facts about Madison:
Chock's full first name is Madison La'akea Te-Lan Hall. She is of Chinese-Hawaiian descent.
She won the International Family Film Fest Award in 2003. This factoid is listed on the Chock/Zuerlein bio, and I have no idea what it was about.

C&Z were the 2009 world junior champions. Their programs at Jr. Worlds were:
OD Minnie the Moocher by The Dancing Fool

    and

    FD Phantom of the Opera

In their final season, 2010-2011, they earned bronze medals at TEB and SC.

Their best ever performances resulted in a ninth place finish at 2011 Worlds.

Their SD in the 2010-2011 season was
    Foxtrot: Milord by Edith Piaf
Quickstep: Padam Padam by Edith Piaf
    The program from 2010 TEB:

C&Z particpated in the ISU Test Event Dance, Sesto San Giovanni, Italy May 17, 2009, which was part of determining what the SD would look like. They demonstrated the "Rhythm Choice"

Madison & Evan just beat Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje in the free dance at Nebelhorn 2014!

Here's their new American In Paris Free Dance. The lifts are new, and not quite smooth yet, but a good effort!

Here's their Paso Doble SD from Nebelhorn 2014, too:

Oh if only she could give him more pizzazz! and he could give her more technical ability. He absolutely needs a shot of testosterone for the paso (this is your chance to shine, Evan--take advantage of it). The audio on the video I saw was dreadful, so I'll wait for Skate America to say more about the SD. But the FD is definitely the most sophisticated program they've done yet. I just wish her edges were deeper and more precise. I think she and Illynkh are the two most charismatic of the female ice dancers. You just can't look away from either. Both of them need to work on matching their lines and extension. But with this program I can see them in the thick of the medal chase this season. They finally cracked 100 at an international event. That's always a good sign.

He does look good in all black for the FD (and her costume is lovely--good work, Madison). Great new haircut for her, by the way, one of the best I've seen on a female skater in years (yes, I can be that shallow!).

You are so right their FD in particular was the most sophisticated of all the dancers but their performance was flat. Their SD also lacks passion of any sort, but you can see how much it would add to the feel of the dance. I hope they can add this because we all know that W/P will improve and we haven't seen either the Shibs or CL. The Russians are an unknown entity. I thought Paradis and Oulette (sp) outperformed all the top/elite teams. Come on guys this could be your year to shine!

I like the beard, too ^_^

And yeah I loved American in Paris!! Thought that it was executed well for this early in the season and overall it was a more powerful program than Weaver /Poje 's and rightfully scored higher
