Eighteen U.S. Athletes to Compete at 2014 World Junior Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 11, 2014) – Eighteen athletes will represent Team USA at the 2014 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships March 10-16, in Sofia, Bulgaria. Competition begins Wednesday with the short dance and pairs short program and concludes Sunday with the ladies free skate.

Ladies
Amber Glenn is the 2014 U.S. junior champion. In her international debut at 2014 JGP Czech Republic, she won the bronze medal. Tyler Pierce is the 2014 U.S. junior silver medalist. She competed last fall at JGP Estonia, finishing sixth in her first international appearance. Karen Chen finished fourth as a junior at the 2013 U.S. Championships. She won a pair medals on the 2013 JGP circuit – gold in Slovakia and bronze in Latvia – but withdrew from the 2013 JGP Final and again after the short program at the 2014 U.S. Championships due to injury.
Men
Nathan Chen has three U.S. junior medals to his credit, including gold in 2012 and ’14. Last fall, he qualified for the 2013 JGP Final where he earned bronze. Jordan Moeller won the U.S. junior silver medal at the 2014 U.S. Championships in Boston. He competed at JGP events in Poland and Latvia last fall. Shotaro Omori is the reigning World Junior bronze medalist, aiding the U.S. to a podium sweep of the event with Joshua Farris and Jason Brown. He missed the 2014 U.S. Championships due to injury.

Pairs
Madeline Aaron and Max Settlage, the 2014 U.S. junior champions, have competed together internationally together since 2012 and will make their World Junior debuts. Kaitlin Budd and Nikita Cheban finished seventh at 2013 JGP Slovakia, the event that marked their international debut. Most recently, they finished eighth as juniors as at the U.S. Championships. Aya Takai and Brian Johnson, seventh in Boston, earned their tickets to the World Junior Championships last weekend when the won silver at Challenge Cup 2014 in The Hague, Netherlands, and earned the minimum technical scores in both segments of competition. Chelsea Liu and Devin Perini, the 2014 U.S. junior silver medalists, withdrew from this event due to an injury to Perini.

Ice dance
Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker have medaled at the last two U.S. Championships and are the 2014 U.S. junior titlists. They competed at the JGP Final in December, winning silver. They were seventh at this event a year ago. They will be joined by the respective 2014 junior silver and bronze medalists. Lorraine McNamara and Quinn Carpenter, who were ninth at the 2013 World Junior Championships, and Rachel Parsons and Michael Parsons, who also competed at the 2013 JGP Final.
