it's funny... some posters are saying that don't criticize the skaters.. after all they're only skating and should not be blamed by this mess.. and yet here is a skater who criticized her fellow skater and described her program as weaker... imagine that.. :sarcasm:

I would assume she was baffled by the results. Kim knows she's a better skater than Sotnikova, and after skating perfectly, she must have assumed that she would win. Same with Plushenko assuming he had won in Vancouver, after skating cleanly, and knowing that he has a quad and the leader Lysacek doesn't. In their minds, they were superior on paper, but obviously Plushenko didn't maximize his points, and Kim failed to realise that Sotnikova was getting that gold the moment Sotnikova finished her FS.

I don't agree with this at all. From what I think I know about Yuna, she is very humble and never once have I heard her say how "good" she is. Rather, she always says she is proud of herself for skating well, that is all she can ask of herself. From her comments at the Olympics, all I heard from her was that she was satisfied with her skate and that she did the best she could. She smiled on the podium with her Silver medal while Adelina jumped up and down in joy.

If she thought at all about the scoring, it was probably in the vein of "there is no point in questioning it, what's done is done, I did the best I could and I'm satisfied". I sincerely doubt that Yuna is burdened by the result, she has a full happy life, we should all be so lucky.

Logically, how could Kim be baffled by scores without seeing the performance? She could be baffled by her own scores without seeing how others have skated, but I don't think you can be baffled by your placement without seeing how others have skated.

A couple things:

1. Where does it say Yuna was "baffled" by the scores? I've seen/read many Yuna interviews, I don't remember her saying anything like that.

2. Yuna would only have been talking about her own scores...not the placement nor the scores of other skaters. She's already stated she didn't get a chance to see the other skaters' performances.

Figuring skating is a sport where you're really only competing against yourself. You prepare your routine, and you deliver it as best you possibly can. You don't change anything based on the performance of other skaters, so there'd be no reason to watch other skaters.

^ from what I remember Yuna said the whole thing was baffling. I took it as the whole experience, Sochi , scores, fans etc..... There was an article ill try to search out that was trying to prove scandal and used Yuna and baffled in the title. It's been posted here a few times. Ill search for it.

I think it's a misrepresentation of what she actually meant and taken out of context.

Edit: she said absurd. Not baffling. People tried to make it a quote about the judging but I for one think it was against the whole situation with the media, fans, and the actual event. Just my opinion.

Calm down. :rolleye: There's no distortion, when you say you're confused by the results it means it doesn't seem right to you. It most certainly isn't at all conciliatory, and Yuna never said anything abut the death threats and abuses Adelina received.

Adelina skated the best skate I've ever seen from her at Sochi, so what if she didn't skate as well before? She brought her A game, and it should just be judged for what it was at Sochi. I agree with Stojko, Weir, Lipinski, and countless others about this result.

As I have said, IF ADELINA WASN'T ATTACKED the way she has been, if it weren't made into a huge controversy of national proportion, neither Adelina nor her coaches would be giving interviews to DEFEND against all these allegations of cheating and fraud. Of course she has to compare her skate to Yuna's, she needs to explain how she deserves to win gold, and Yuna silver. :rolleye:

There is no problem with disgreement, there is a problem with disagreeing in a violent, abusive way.

1. Why would Yuna or any other skater say anything about the messages Adelina received, if they indeed were even aware of it? The best possible response to trolls is to ignore it. Commenting on it just bring attention to it and encourages it.

2. Adelina skated her heart out, but was overscored. Many more agree with this (but obviously not Stojko, Weir, Lipinski and "countless" others).

3. It's not Adelina's job to defend her results. She's a skater, not a judge/technical specialist. She didn't need to try and play down another skater's performance to validate her medal.

I think you could be quite right that the quote was possibly about the whole situation.

The news article used the word "absurd," but numerous folks chimed in to clarify that the word Yuna used had a meaning of "baffling" more than "absurd" here. Video exists of the fan event Q&A so they do have the original Korean word to go by, and apparently it's a word that can be translated in a few different ways. But anyway, it was taken out of context, since what Yuna was really saying was that she was happy it was all over, which got lost in the furor over the word "absurd/baffling".

Ah ok thanks. Yes, remember when very first article came out that used the word "absurd" in its title. I just kept thinking, well crap, now every media outlet is going use this sensationalist title everywhere. Sure enough, within a day, I saw about 5 more articles that said something to the effect of, "ZOMG!! Yuna said Sochi was Absurd!!!!111111".

You're right. It was mistranslated and used out of context. It was from an interview held at a mall in Seoul. I saw most of the interview but didn't hear Yuna say anything that critical of the events at Sochi. The interview seemed very light-hearted. She said in her post-medal ceremony interview that she was aware that her fans were angry with the scoring. So if she did say anything to the effect of "absurd," she probably would have referred to that whole situation, as you already stated.

Perhaps others can point me to the actual Korean quote?

EDIT: Okay, as one of the comments in the articled pointed out:

Yuna: “It’s not so much that I found the result reasonable (어이는 없었는데…), but I didn’t have any particular thoughts at the moment other than I was so glad that it was over and I am still happy over that. However, people are still telling me even now that we pity you, it was unjust, regrettable, we are distressed over you (laughing), even though I myself haven’t obsessed over the result at all.”

I do remember her saying those words. And I don't even know if the commenter's translation is fully accurate either, because you HAVE to listen to her answer in the context of the interviewer's question. I had listened that section over and over, trying to figure out a better way to translate it. I think based on the question, what she was really trying to answer was, "this had nothing to do with whether I found the results reasonable or not..." FYI, this is all going from my memory of that interview that happened months ago. So I could be inaccurate here...

1) I'm not saying I'm critical of Yuna for not speaking up. But I can answer your question by saying showing support to a fellow skater who faces tremendous pressure and criticism from your own fan base would be called leading by example and could calm a few loyal fans down. I didn't lose respect toward her for not doing it though...this is a very sticky mess probably left avoided.
2)I think they were both over scored.
3)I don't think Adelina went out of her way to defend herself by simply answering a question posed to her. If that's how she feels so be it. It seems a lot of fans tend to think these girls need to be over the top PC. I don't think that's necessary or even healthy. I posted earlier Id rather talk to an honest jerk than a insincere "friend". Not that anyone here is either it's just to make a point mind you.

To reiterate!!! I'm no Adelina fan and just commenting on this situation. Yuna has the utmost respect from me and I was hoping for Yuna to win with Yulia in 2nd. Oh that would have been nice!!

When my alarm went off this morning I immediately watched this. It made me feel much better

We'll just have to agree to disagree then :)

And yes, I know you're a Yuna fan. I saw your many posts emphasizing that fact.

I don't really have an issue with Adelina's comments. She was asked about the controversy and whether she had (I'm paraphrasing here) wrongly beaten Yuna for the gold. What was she supposed to say? Yes, the judging was screwed up for the entire Olympics. I am Russian and Putin wanted Russians to win gold medals at home so our skaters got an absurd number of bonus points relative to the rest of the field. If the Olympics had been held elsewhere, I probably wouldn't have placed in the top 2?

That might be true and deep down, she may even count her lucky stars that the 2014 Olympics weren't in Zurich or some other neutral location. But she'll never admit it, especially not publicly.

I don't think she was particularly disrespectful to Yuna. It is true that technically, Adelina's program was more difficult than Yuna's. Adelina had a 3-3 (flutz or not), a 2A-3T, and seven triples to Yuna's 6. Plus her spins were more difficult and better executed.

I think the issue is that putting Adelina in first place ignores the non-technical aspects of skating which Kim and Carolina Kostner do much better than Adelina. They were not rewarded for their superior skating skills, choreo, interpretation, and performance/ execution in the PCS marks while Adelina was. That's how Adelina won gold. Her PCS score was 8-10 points too high in the free skate and also too high in the SP. A discussion of technical difficulty, IMO, misses the point.

Out of curiosity, in what ways did you feel Yuna was overscored?

That is a fair question and without getting into the protocols...I was simply referring to the overall Olympic inflation.

Living up to an OGM is a hard task. I think Adelina will find that out this coming year (if she continues) and with middling results will probably retire at the end of 2014. She is just beginning to learn what pressure and stress is and the effects it can have on performance and execution.
