For those of you who thought they couldn't see So Youn doing a "sassy" number: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAxxDwH9sHw

Her layback position was also really good back then, what happened? I love her but I kind of wish she would improve her layback position at least a little bit.

flexibility is a mysterious thing ;) I do think it's because of lack of stretching but maybe, her back health is also part of this reason. Again, she may be able to regain/improve her layback position in the future but I think her level of flexibility is above average (if not higher) and looks very natural which I find appealing. I do think that she should focus on other important aspects rather than a position.

Her exhibition to I Dreamed a Dream nearly brought me to tears. She just got that effortless, elegant ease and music seemed to flow from her veins. She really belongs to the group of skaters who can simply do a few strokes across the ice and still manage to draw people in. I'm not sure if an international judge will really help, but her biggest problem IMO is her lack of confidence and experience in handling pressure and that can't be fixed overnight. She looked so much more comfortable and relaxed when she skated in the gala.

I know she's been in the senior level competition before but I feel that now there is so much expectation from her. I felt bad for her when she was crying after the free skate. Hopefully though, her reputation will grow more and more. It's a little unfortunate to accept but popularity and reputation obviously help with the PCS sometimes.

Has anyone noticed that she looks thinner now? http://instagram.com/p/vd6DN3nCFm/

I remember there was a news clip on YouTube before SA and they said she lost 2kg before the competition!
But I think she lost more than that... But a sports slim-down was good for her because her spins were quite slow.

She performed an amazing gala programme  So happy she got invited, and she really expressed the lyrics there, unlike so many others this season.

I hope she lost weight just because of training and growing up, not because of diet. I am sad about young skaters struggle to lose weight because of "ideal body type". Skaters come in all shapes.

I hav a silly question: Does body weight have any thing to do with the quality of spins? I've always assumed that the quality of your spins depend on your ability to transfer weight to the spinning leg and use of different body muscles.

Mirai Nagasu is a very good spinner, despite her thick frame (she has a beautiful inna bauer, too). So I don't think body weight has that much weight on the quality of spins.

To be fair, Mirai had *insane* spins before puberty. So Youn's spins were very good, but even when she was younger, she didn't focus on them the way Mirai and Caroline Zhang had back in the day. No matter what your frame is, I am sure that makes some difference too.

Take a look at a top. They are not skinny, and they are often weighted at the bottom.

If you're a skater, having a stable balance over your skate(s), so that you don't wobble around losing speed to friction is key.

A low center of gravity is helpful too.

What about moment of inertia? That actually depends on the way that mass is distributed around the center of mass, hence a "skinnier" person will have a smaller moment of inertia and requires less force (or, technically, torque) to set the body into rotational motion. This is especially true for jumps, but applies to spins in some sense as well.

In spinning, the lower moment of rotational inertia does make it a bit easier to start a spin, but it also makes it easier for any errors or friction to slow down the speed of your spin.

Queen of spins Lucinda Ruh had such a small frame. She could probably spin so well because of her small moment of inertia that allowed her to reach an insane rotational velocity. Go physics!

My favorite EX from CoR was this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr1_lmMtAhQ That 2A at 2:00 was breathtaking.

Is it just me or might Yuna be working with her? Because I have not seen this caliber of musicality and grace at ladies EX since the Queen.

She does have Yuna's elegance on the ice. I am really glad she's carefully but gradually picking up the difficulty in her jumps and focusing more now in the fundamental aspects of skating -- plus skating elegantly and beautifully on the ice... The more difficult jump and perhaps higher speed on the ice will come eventually. I am really a fan. I hope she continues to be supported and molded into a top skater.

I thought that gala was really beautiful.

I meant like one-on-one. Private lessons. :D

I would say all of them (So Youn, Hae Jin, and Da Bin(?)) work with her one-on-one. I don't think they would have the time to have the rink for themselves though. They would train as a group but Yuna will focus on one skater at a time.

These past few days I've been searching for some music that I wish So Youn could skate to. Here's one that I thought that suits her style yet can challenge her at the same time.

IU - Flower

The song is sung by K-pop singer IU. I thought the Spanish guitar (? - correct me on this if I'm wrong) vibe would give So Youn a more mature style.

I think she'd be amazing doing an re-edited version of Saving Mr. Banks OST by Thomas Newman, she has lightest touch and an innocence that can twinkle those delicate piano notes soundtrack vs the bombastic war horse music everyone else is typically doing. It is a nice way to separate herself from the pack. It is just a simple humble SP but make sure it draws the audience in to pay attention to her quieter style. Challenging, but possible.

It doesn't have to be an literal interpretation but about capturing a mood, she will need to break the audience's heart while uplift them along with the music. It is one way to endear her to the audience/judges perhaps. It can be a tribute to her parents or something, so it allows her to put in some personal touches rather than a particular character.

I love this idea!! Isn't that originally from Mary Poppins though? Also, So Youn has not really done any "war horse" programs so far, all the programs I've seen her skate to are really soft and elegant, just like her.

As for the Korean pop one, I think that would make a better exhibition piece.

Also, finally a gorgeous photo of her by the ISU!
