I'm REALLY surprised by how much she has improved so quickly. Her jumps, although still small, are all fully rotated now. Since she does Lutz and Flip from the correct edges, this makes her a big threat. She can definitely make the Japanese Olympic team.

She still has the tendency to over rotate. Her problem is she may have a growth spurt this year and it may affect the rotation of her jumps. She does remind me of Akiko mixed with Yukina Ota.

I first noticed Satoko about 2 years ago (I think) because of her transitions. My goodness, she packed in more transitions than Patrick Chan. I think she will be a star right after 2014.

Very gifted musically, too.
Her debut SP from 2011 was actually one of my favourite ladies SPs from that season, choreographed masterfully by Tom Dickson. I loved her instantly.
I think it's unfortunate that her less-than-ideal jumps get so much attention when just about everything else which she does so wonderfully gets pretty much overlooked. I love her musicality, her self-aware movement and carriage, and her butter-like blades that do the steps and turns so effortlessly that they seem like they can go on forever.
She still has the tendency to over rotate. Her problem is she may have a growth spurt this year and it may affect the rotation of her jumps. She does remind me of Akiko mixed with Yukina Ota.
Wow, I think you kind of nailed it. She has the elegance and softness of Ota, and the freedom and energy of Suzuki. All three are amazingly musical and wonderful dancers.

ETA watched Satoko's LP again and I'm already ready to proclaim it one of my favourite programs of the year  The girl is just brilliant. Which 15-year-olds move like this?! Who is the choreographer, again?

The IN article mentioned that Davis and White aren't going to reveal their music until after Champs Camp. Why does the beginning of this thread say they're skating to Schehrezade for their FD? I'm assuming it's based on rumors?

It was reported in Doppio Axel, the well known Italian figure skating site. It may not be true. One can never make assumptions about US skaters until after Champs camp, because sometimes the federation will shoot down a program. Consequently, D&W did not do a waltz SD to Amelie in 2010-2011, doing waltzes from La Traviata and La Boheme instead, and did not do an FD to Nino Rota's La Strada, doing Die Fledermaus instead, in 2011-2012.

Because Doppio Axel is a generally reliable source, we left Scheherazade listed, but we won't really know until after Champs Camp in any case.

BTW, Vincent Zhou's IN bio was updated, and his SP is to the Barber of Seville. His choreographer is Justin Dillon.

Scheherazade?????????????

Awful news.

I didn't expect that at all after the last 2-3 seasons. I thought she'd come up with something special and unique.

Very, very disappointing.

I love the improvement I saw from Satoko too, I also love Yukina, She is so beautiful!

Ah, thank you for the reminder of the beautiful Yukina. A very uniquely elegant skater. Part of the tradition of incredible Ina Bauer's from Japanese ladies.

People seem very concerned about the free program. Let me just say this: I have seen it with my own eyes and it blew me away!
Lori and Caro know exactly what they are doing and they have come up with great stuff for this season. Just wait and see :)

I thought the same thing about Bolero but that turned out to be a shocking and pleasant surprise IMO. I loved it...

Even though the music is common, Carolina is not. She is exceptional at interpreting music so b/c it's her, I'd say hold on to your disappointment until after you see the program.

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm not a skater so I've always wondered how skaters learn and remember their choreo after first getting their programs choreographed. Is it written down/recorded/documented somehow? Often these early season showings seem a little empty or incomplete in places, so how is it that skaters fill in these gaps on their own after spending just a week or so with their choreographers? I know many skaters will go back for more sessions and fine-tuning throughout the season, but what do they initially take home?

There are a lot of tapes and recordings

I agree. I wouldn't say Michelle's Scheherezade was terrible but it definitely isn't among her best FSs. It was solid but not special enough for an Olympic season....

Yu-Na's was nice but nothing special as well. I can't think of anyone who skated to it and really put their stamp on it.

I do think Carolina and Lori will make it something special. As of now, Carolina is the only skater I have 100% confidence in when it comes to having a well-done and captivating program...

Michelle's Scheherazade was actually quite interesting in its earlier Kawahara version before she took out all the choreography.

What choreography did she "take out?" She changed the jump layout at Nationals and added in another split falling leaf (an improvement, IMO) and took out a butterfly at the end. But the basic layout and interpretation of the fast and slow parts of the music is the same. This is how choreography is defined under IJS:Choreography/Composition, which is the arrangement of all movements according to the principles of proportion, space and music (e.g. idea, concept, unity, pattern, phrasing, originality, design). I think her choreography is just fine under this definition--especially the way she builds to a big finish with her final footwork sequence, the falling leaf jumps and spin at the end. Michelle's long programs always built to a big finish, which was one of her strengths.

After watching a few of the programs posted:

-Courtney is still very sloppy and rushed, but her free program has to have the highest base value of all of the American ladies with 2 triple lutzes and a triple flip in the bonus. I think she deserves the Skate America spot. She could place quite well based on her technical ability.

-Miyahara seems to have grown. Her skates no longer look bigger than she is. Her jumps are still very tiny, but she looks like she is getting enough height to rotate the jump in the air now. We will have to see how the technical panels view her jumps this season.

-I hope Karen Chen gets a Junior Grand Prix spot soon. Her program is excellent - both artistically and technically. With five of her jumping passes in the second half and a 3Lz+3T and 2A+3T, it's no wonder her technical score was 69+, even in a junior competition.

-I really dislike Tuktamysheva's new SP. She is becoming a boring one-trick pony with all of the Latin programs. All of her programs are the same. And her SP really highlighted her sloppiness and poor skating skills.

Pechalat/Bourzat have given more details to IN about their music in an article published today.

SD:
Péchalat: We chose well-known pieces from Bob Fosse. The first part is the foxtrot "Big Spender." The second is the quickstep "Sing, Sing, Sing." Why not choose something well known? The third part is "Mein Herr" from the musical Cabaret, sung by Liza Minnelli.

FD:
Bourzat: ... One morning last November, I woke up and it suddenly came to my mind that the theme of our ultimate free dance could be the story of The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. ....
Icenetwork.com: Is there a soundtrack of The Little Prince?
Péchalat: No, we wanted to select well-known pieces of music which have a relation to this character. We thought of the Cirque du Soleil right away; therefore, our first piece of music is Quidam. The second part is from the soundtrack of the French film Micmacs, and the third piece is the well-known "Jeux Interdits," from the film Forbidden Games. Maxime Rodriguez composed the fourth part and arranged the whole program.
