Should figure skating be removed from the Olympic games?

Personally, I never forgave Patrick Chan for the Pig War (between the U.S. and Canada, 1859). :)

The Pig War is a shining light of sensibleness compared to the premise that figure skating should be removed from the Olympics because the Korean judge was too harsh on Mao's jumps.

San Juan Island National Historical Park celebrates how individuals and nations can resolve disputes without resorting to violence. For it was here in the mid-1800s that Great Britain and the United States settled ownership of the island through peaceful arbitration.

In the spirit of The Pig War, we should fix the sport. Japan and Korea and Italy should join the US, Greece, and Canada in the drive to get rid of anonymous judging. Then, if the Korean judge is systematically underscoring the Japanese skater, she can be challenged. Or if the Japanese judge is underscoring the Korean skater. There's no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We should consider the wisdom of the British Admiral Baynes in the Pig War:

Throughout the remaining days of July and well into August, Hornby accumulated more marines; the majority veterans of amphibious landings under fire in China. However, Hornby wisely refused to take any action against the Americans until the arrival of Rear Adm. R. Lambert Baynes, commander of British naval forces in the east Pacific. Baynes, appalled at the situation, advised Douglas that he would not "involve two great nations in a war over a squabble about a pig."

That's a distortion. I never limited the issue to Koreans and had no such intention.

I wouldn't cry if it was removed. The sport is way too subjective these days. It's a little better than 6.0, but still a lot worse than pre-1973 when Figures was the majority of the score. At least then most of the scoring wasn't someone's opinion - like it is today. Judges got down at the patch and looked at the figures with magnifying glasses and measures. It was a lot easier to see why Trixie Schuba basically won competitions by default back then, then arguing over Artistry and Components these days...

People crying about the thread topic seem to be forgetting that this current "revision" of Figure Skating is not what was added to the Olympics. TBQH, it wasn't until after figures that a lot of the "Scandals" started to happen - and especially not until after they devalued them and added in that redundant short program portion to competitions. Bloc judging existed back then, but even if the US had 9 judges on their side they wouldn't have been able to get Janet Lynn higher than 3rd on the Podium in Sapporo, for example, because it was too hard to come back from being so terrible at figures.

Now we have short and free skate only, and even if a "favorite" falls the judges simply give them untouchable components and congratulate them on their medal.

I told you we have a more serious case than Skyfly. :disapp: at least Skyfly would now and then drop us a little bit of facts (like who is who, how tall the skater is).

Meow! Your claws are showing (but then it takes one to know one; I'm referring to myself, of course...)

Oh, I will jump into any drama whenever I see one. I just love porn corn.:popcorn: anyways I have to give skyfly some credit, because most of the time we could understand her illogical reasoning.
But the OP of this thread is another head case! I give up! :rolleye:

Figure skating should be removed from the Olympics until such a time that professional, independent officials (in a fashion and style similar to professional baseball, basketball, football and hockey) can be hired, trained and deployed to competitions.

Have professional judges where the job is to judge, and they would be removed and lose their job if they cheat or are biased is the only way to save FS as a competitive sport.

I KNOW lots of people here would LOVE a new career as a judge. I would educate myself more and apply.....

Great idea to kill a discipline.
So if you want figure skating to become some obscure elitist shmartistic show without any wider public support, money, sponsors or media attention then removing it from the Olympics is a great idea!
Yes, just reduce f.s. to some travelling shows! That's it! Pure artistry!
I guess many of the forum members will be happy for a while: finally you will be able to isolate yourselves from the dumb masses and become the elitist niche snobs. No judging, no rules, no politics, just pure "shmartistry" and snotty b.s.
But I warn you: after very short time there will be no skaters to talk about either! The old ones will die out and the new ones will never come!

My thoughts exactly. How would the sport ever pick up any new fans? How would skaters pick up any major sponsors? In most of the world, the only time people can ever see skating on tv is every 4 years at the Olys, and most don't have access to rinks either. It's already one of the least accessible sports, and without visibility it will become even more elitist and obscure. I personally would never have become a fan if the Olys had not made an impression on me throughout my life.

Wow. If that's really how you see GS members, why did you bother to join?

I do not think figure skate will lose fans just because it is not included in Olympic held only once every 4 years.
Little damage to the sport if quality of TV broadcast become better so everyone understand the performance and score, and since more people use internet than before. A lot maybe to IOC people. I have no knowledge in sports business and organization. Personally I am interested in data superimposition(speed change, number of backcrossing, jump hight and width, entry speed and degree of rotation)because people say someone is faster and have flow and jump higher but such impression can be manipulated by camera.

But the quality of TV broadcasts will have no reason to become better if skating isn't an Olympic sport. TV is a business and depends on making money for its sponsors, which is done by attracting audiences. Audiences are created by big-ticket events such as the Olympics. That's pretty much how I found skating; I certainly didn't skate myself and didn't know anyone who skated. When was the last time you saw, for example, Morris dancing televised? Or roller skating? These things don't acquire fans from isolated announcements or Internet videos.

And it's not just fans that skating will lose without the possibility of the Olympics. It's skaters. What parent will be willing to spend thousands of dollars a year, wake up at five every morning to drive the kid to practice, travel to meets, and risk significant injury for a sport that's shown only on Netflix or YouTube? What country's federation will spend the money to sponsor skaters?

Just because the Olympics occurs only every four years doesn't reflect its importance. So I feel I must disagree with your conclusion.

So it all depends on what figure skating really is. If the greatness is supposed to be measured by number of facial grimaces to performing Ave Maria, then definitely REMOVE it from the olympics! And then good luck making this artistic activity (but not sport) survive!
Sorry, you cannot have cake and eat it. Either world wide sport with media and money, but also with rules and athletic requirements, or obscure "artistic" activity paid from your own pockets, because I am not going to give a penny to that thing!

I do not have anyone close who learn figure skate so I do not know the cost students should pay. I think if the figure skate is acknowledged as tough sports and not just dancing a fixed pattern on the ice looking graceful, it will have more watchers and they will have respect and love for the skaters who master such techniques and can perform in competitions. More people might consider sending their children to home rinks of such skaters to learn figure skating.

 Yeap skyfly can be very scary OTT but I'm sure he/she has very solid knowledge of actual FS world. Some of skyfly comments are very straight to the point. For some is just pure ugly obsessions.

Would be kinda scary if she were actually a coach. All of her students must be on Victoria Secret Model standards.
