Plushenko has spoken about wanting to open up skating schools in Russia where students can also live and study. And he doesn't rule out coaching either. But he loves to skate and compete and has no desire to stop yet. Is there something wrong with that, for someone who has been a figure skater all his life and is still earning respectable results (when healthy)? Of course I am concerned about his body, but I think he is smart enough to respect his limits.

I'm sure he has never lost a wink of sleep over Yagudin's opinion of him either.

Of course there is nothing wrong with that, I 'hope' that if Russia is limited to only 1-2 spot(s) in another major competition again that they think long and extremely hard about having him be 1 of the competitors. The stumble/awkward landing that he did in the Olympics that forced him to withdraw, did not look all that bad, but when you have had that many procedures on a vital part of your anatomy you are far more likely to get injured easily.

This reminds me of the NFL (American football) there are a lot of former players talking about the amount of hits they took during their career and the damage that it did to them 10, 20, 30 years later. *Yes, I take the approach that these are grown adults they are well within their rights to mutilate their bodies* But I still feel its an extremely stupid move to make, especially when you are talking about something like your back.

Now I kind of agree with what Yagudin said about him. He apparently doesn't know what else to do besides figure skating.
I think he would be an excellent jump coach or technical specialist. I'm sure that he probably has a lot of endorsements in Russia as well. I think he's just a ham who doesn't want to cede the spotlight.

If Plushy became a technical specialist, we would have lots of headlines like this:

"Former elite skater, now technical specialist, a new Shin Amano of Russia?"
"King of quads said all the jumps these days are poorly done!"
"Plushenko still steals the spotlight, now that he is the hottest and diva-est technical specialist!"

    Something like that, huh?

Well he should have thought of that before making such a stink to get back.

Everybody (who was thinking realistically) knew that

    a) Russia was going to medal in the team event, with or without Plushenko

    b) There was no way in hell that he could do what amounted to two single events back to back.

His 'comeback' was primarily about his personal goals rather than the greater good of Russian skating so they managed a gold in one event (which they might have anyway) and no representation at all in the other while depriving one skater of invaluable international experience (no matter the result).

He also helped make the Rusian spectators there look bad (the rush to the exits once he quit).

He should just leave gracefully, already.

It seems you don't know his personal life. He is in spotlight if he doesn't skate. His wife is working in the Russian showbusiness and in the fashion world, she is very very famous. If Plushy wants to be in spotlight he will go with her everywhere. They are always in the Russian's magazines. Not to mention I'm very sceptical
of his comeback. If Plushy in the Russian team, Mishin and his team receive more support...Plushy can do this in this year if he won't compete..

Good luck to him, the more skaters who like him decide to continue for a long time and maintain their success over time, the more "normal" it will be for other skaters to have a long career and not feel like they have to leave once they reach a certain age. Most figure skaters career is often too short, hope this trend will change with time.

OH GOOD LORD!!!!;;;;;;;;;; I don't think I could go through another year of abject adoration on this board. If there is a "new" Plushenko someone has figured out how to clone him.

I don't know why he would put his body through this anymore. He is going to be even more susceptible to back injuries as he gets older. I suppose he may have been motivated by the fact that the top men, despite their tremendous ability, just aren't good competitors. Two clean programs from Plushenko would have won him the gold medal anywhere if the top men skated as they did in Sochi.

He's turning into the Rolling Stones of figure skating. I swore I thought the RS Steel Wheels tour (or whatever they called it) meant they would be pushing Mick onstage in a wheelchair. "Jumpin' Jack Flash" indeed.

If he can bring the goods, then why not let him skate? Mad respect to him.

Not surprised at all about this. He makes me think of the Energizer Bunny, keeps going and going... Though I worry about his health if he comes back.

And I want to miraculously become independently wealthy and never go to work again.

He can want whatever crazy thing he wants. It won't happen and if it does.all i can say is that with all my heart i hope he doesn't become parylized because i fear that is where this is going.
