As has been mentioned, this style has been around forever. And like Alba, I also do this when I'm in my house. But for skating, I think it looks most elegant knotted in the middle of the back of the head. Like Yuna Kim has always done. Having it smack on the top of the head is a little distracting to my eye. I'd really like to see some nicely done classic French braids on some girls this year. It's more "done" than a ponytail and less stuffy than a bun. http://www.stylebistro.com/The+Pret.../YfdoCy49He3/Emmy+Rossum+Classic+French+Braid

How about on some guys? ;) They would be true trendsetters.

I'm still hoping against hope that Gracie Gold's power braids are not gone for good. They looked great and set her apart from the crowd.

Do you thik it kind of looks like Adelina cut her hair very short?

Is it the work of a mysterious bun or did she really go to a chop shop? At first I saw it and said no way it's just the angle of the pic. Then I also saw this which is either another angle induced illusion or maybe there is something to it. However this one is far less convincing.

Hmm. Anyone know what's going on? Is this my bored imagination running off of the tracks? No matter what the reality is she looks good IMO so I'll just leave it at that?

I'm fairly certain that's a bun. I really hope it is, because when I saw her on tv with her hair down, it's so shiny and beautiful. Once I get past the somewhat questionable costumes, I think she's gorgeous!
One person who did get a chop is Ashley Wagner. Some twit pics show her with her hair bobbed to just below her chin. So, she will have to retire that top knot.

I love that man's hairstyle. Or some hairstyles from Games of Thrones or Viking.
Can you tell me how to do that French braid updo (I already know how to French braid). I prefer that elegant updo to the sleek Michelle's middle bun. I don't like the top knot, but it looked fantastic on Elena and suited her character very well.

Adelina's long straight hair (to which we are accustomed) is visible in this photo from today (Maia's birthday dinner in Japan):

ETA, Happy Birthday to Maia Shibutani -- and to Mai Asada (per Buttle's tweet). :hb:

Super-random FYI:
A woman whose very popular YouTube videos demonstrate how to create enviable hairstyles (including braided extravaganzas) was a guest on Katie Couric's show on Friday, and I happened to see a little bit of the segment.
One of the anecdotes mentioned was that the Game of Thrones even had requested permission for the series to use one of the styles that she had demonstrated on YouTube. The woman gladly gave her permission, was flown to the Game of Thrones set, etc.
Anyway, the woman's name is Mindy McKnight. Maybe one of her demos will address your question.

OMG, I know Mindy but I'm not aware that one of her hairstyles was reused by the Games of Thrones crew. The French updo looks easier than I thought. Actually, most of the GOT hairstyles are not difficult to recreate and I wonder why there aren't more male skaters wearing more feisty hairstyles.

I would like to see some skaters go back to the non bun hair styles like some skaters of the past had, i.e. the hair style worn in their everyday life. Dortohy, Janet, Sonia, etc

Who was the first skater to wear her hair in a bun?

I don't know if she was the first, but among American ladies skaters, Nancy Kerrigan comes to my mind. Love her or hate her, I felt she was a trend setter back in her day, and influenced lots of the styles we currently see today in ladies figure skating with the beautiful, elegant dresses (some being designed by Vera Wang), her hair worn in a sophisticated bun, and of course, the Kerrigan spiral.

Bah, easy enough to pull it back and put on a fake bun. Synchro skaters do it all the time.

What happened to Ashley's hair? And I'm not talking about the imo bad cut, but that it looks like dry straw. She's always had such beautiful hair.

It's probably because the picture is a bit blurry and maybe her hair was frizzy. My hair also looks a little crazy when the weather is humid.

She should be able to put it back, I cut my hair earlier this year to about that length, needed a few extra bobby pins for my hair at the gym but I think it'll grow out by the time the season starts.

It could just be humidity or it could be starting to show permanent damage from years of blow-drying and flat ironing her hair.
