Three-time German national champion Ina Bauer, who is now 73, is the inventor of the "Ina Bauer" skating element.

There are three variations: outside, inside, and layback. Who do you think has the best in each?

Layback -- no competition for Shizuka Arakawa!

A team of Japanese orthopedic surgeons once conducted a study where they placed sensors all over Shixuka's body to study how she could do it. IIRC they found that she had some sort of structural peculiarity in the way two of her lower vertebrae were joined together that enabled her to get such a dramatic bend in her back.

For the men, here's Yuzuru Hanyu. :)

Yulia is a fan of the layback Ina Bauer too and uses it in my favorite part of her SL program

It certainly doesn't need to be as contorted to be beautiful though. This one is pure LOVE

Edit: Hey Mathman, we posted the same Sasha photo at the same time.

ETA: Jeffrey Buttle shows how the use of a powerful leg extension can present a beautiful image while performing the move. I can sense the power and flow of momentum when looking at this photo.

Golly, Shizuka's Ina Bauer is a thing of beauty! Interesting info re: orthopedic study; made me think of cats and their incredible flexibility.

The interesting point is Shizuka said that she was not very flexible in the first place. She trained very hard to get the flexibility. And she still has the best layback of all time. Respect!

Great picture of Jeff Buttle! And I like Yulia's too but it looks much better from the side

I love Yu Na's because it doesn't look like she's flopping back and is actually hitting a position. Any videos of Jonathan Cassar's ina bauers? He has fantastic spread eagles so one would think his IB is lovely.

Elena Berezhnaya has the most beautiful Ina Bauer move. She used it quite often in their earlier routines and with her ex pair partner.

Can anyone explain the actual mechanics of this move? To me, it always looks like the blade is sideways to the direction of motion. But this is impossible, right?

I've heard that ina bauer is more about the balance than the flexibility. ;)

Anyways, what about couple ina bauer in pair skating?

One blade is traveling forward and the other is traveling backward. The feet have to be turned out 180 degrees, same as a spread eagle. (It's possible to do an inside Ina Bauer on a smallish circle with less than 180 turnout, but not a lot less.)

Anyways, what about couple ina bauer in pair skating?

Like this?

I like this one from Yuzuru, its not the best one he's done but I love the hand movements going into it.

An Ina Bauer is a "moves in the field" element in figure skating in which a skater skates on two parallel blades.

A skater does not have to be flexible at all to do an Ina Bauer. A Bauer can be done in upright position.

Yuna's was lovely but I noticed if it's used in transition that she can't get it to the depth she would have if it were a stand-alone move. It looks a bit too rushed.

Otherwise, all examples are great: Shizuka (the best EVER), Yuna, MCM, Yuzu, Sasha, Yulia.
